Before it was Little Dicks...Its was Vahsen's Tavern. (from approx 1940's to 1973). Janis Joplin's bio book refers to it as "Vahsen's Saloon". It was a three room Tavern. I remember going to the "Tavern" after concerts at the Cap from 70 thru 73. Caught the last of the Feb '71 Dead Show's and the Joe Cocker MD&E show (among others). The Vahsen family sold the business to "Modern Cigarette Service" (who owned the building next door) in 1973. Shortly after that sale..it was called "Freddies Place". "Freddie" sold the business (only) to Dick Gildersleeve. It was renamed "Little Dicks" in '76 or '77. I know this since I grew up in Port Chester and am related to the Vahsen Family.

Vahsen's Tavern was when Janis Joplin wrote Mercedes Benz. Dicks was decades later. Vahsen's was a speakeasy during prohibition.

Like any project it’s taken a lot longer than expected but we plan on staying here for 5 years. Initially I wanted to make this a rental but it’s great space at a good price that we can’t duplicate in our market, Greenwich, CT.
