Wells Cathedral
Великобритания
Добавлен 19 июл 2016
Nestled on the southern tip of the Mendip Hills, the twelfth-century Cathedral Church of St Andrew stands proudly at the heart of Wells, England’s smallest city. There has been a sacred site beside the freshwater springs here since 705 AD.
Wells Cathedral is a thriving community of worship and music, houses a rich history, and represents some of the finest early-Gothic architecture in the country. Described as the “most poetic” of English cathedrals, Its calm and light atmosphere never ceases to inspire all those who set foot inside.

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas - Martin/Blane arr. Gritton - Wells Cathedral Choir
Nice to see this back! Still quite like it.
My grandparents lived in Wells, and we'd stay in their house for a couple of weeks in this lovely city when they went away on their summer hols. Looks like there's been some developments and expansion in the ~60 years since 😕
Cut back on paying the monarchy to repair these properties.
you should do more research on the monarchy. there is very substantial returns to the country from having them, valued much more than the "grant" they receive from the government.
The monarchy is actually at the heart of funding and raising funding. King Charles has been especially involved with restoration projects (historically correct), and has even founded a school for people to learn the historic trades and crafts necessary to complete and keep historic restorations. Without the money the monarchy brings in, none of that would be possible. I envy you Brits having so much history and a family dedicated to providing public service and encouraging preservation. Do you really think any of that money sifted through politician’s hands would make it to those projects, or early childhood development, or homelessness? Look what they did with the NIH and the postal service.
Grade I I'd think they'd it would be mandatory to keep them in top condition. They are utterly gorgeous even in poor condition, can't imagine what they will look like when rehabbed.
so, some of the cottages are currently occupied?
There's a video on the Wells Cathedral RUclips channel that shows the interior from a year ago -- it shows the poor condition of and damp of the buildings. They were/are trying to repair the buildings: ruclips.net/video/ZT7C5qrVDdc/видео.htmlsi=Vc13KbCOsmgqNLCk
They should wreck these shabby, old buildings and replace them with modern 1960s adjacent buildings made out of concrete slabs!
Whhooooh yeah!!! Giant morrisons supermarket spot!!!!!
In all seriousness, it's ridiculous that this is claimed as the oldest surviving street when there would be a lot more if they didn't deliberately demolish them, or refuse to rebuild the streets destroyed in the war
Its a shame that they covered the cobbles in dirt (probably for any horses/carriages)
It looks like Hogwarts and then a bunch of kids walked by in capes.
Cloaks, I believe. More functional, being designed to keep the weather off!
I wonder - could that include come and sing events?
An amazing art installation. I got to witness it a couple of weeks ago. Really moving.
Beautiful! Blessed be God forever!
Bravo 👏
"I need to turn this up to eleven!"
Whether I am at the console performing this piece or hearing it, there is something about the ending of this piece that emotionally stirs me.
Having seen this video this morning (1st March, 2024) I went to see this installation at the cathedral this evening. Whilst the projections were impressive in themselves, how was it possible for the sound to be so unbelievably bad? The recordings of the various anthems and other speech were so muffled and unintelligible. I stood next to the various PA speakers as well as the everyday regular in-house column speakers, and the source recordings were equally bad as the other. I have to assume this was wholly intentional as it could not possibly have been attributed to the cathedral's acoustic. 😡🤬
Excellent playing. Perfect tempo
Hmmm! Sounds intriguing!
I've been both grieving and focusing on Christmas Carols. I don't know if you guys are going to deal with another of Rutter's pieces. His Candlelight carol is appropriate for the point of both. My brother passed away just over a week ago! And that's been preoccupying me - most definitely! I have been listening to this carol! And it's given me some comfort.
I remember this. This is going on three - almost four years ago! Hmm! Dark times indeed! But I still do recall it.
WoW what a fantastic project 😮
Beautiful piece. The composer, David Bruce's RUclips channel, led me here. ruclips.net/video/Ii3BwiU7leg/видео.htmlsi=S_yLSDShxa-nHSh7

I am so delighted to see that you are opening some of the houses to the public. My grandmother lived there as a child before her father was snapped up to go to South Carolina. I love Wells Cathedral and have always felt a strong connection, probably due to the family connection. I look forward to looking around the houses.
damp ingress lol
Quality singing 👌
it is so amazing!
Lacking a 32ft pedal stop, especially for such a huge space, in my humble opinion!
It wasn't easy for any of us - at the time. It was upsetting but now we're back in our shared responsibility to lead services. I understood the matter well! It was a long time to be stuck with it as we were. I understand that well.
I remember this from the darkest time for all Cathedral, Abbey and Church Choirs when we were all scuppered by the hated choral vandal Covid 19. And indeed it was lovely.
Sad to think when I write this it is just over an hour since the death announcement.
There are suggestions here in the words that cause we to wonder if the song writer had time to speak with Her Majesty before beginning the process. Strong values come up in these words.
I once visited Wells Cathedral on holiday and the choir sang so beautifully.
Bravo Wells Cathedral - a lovely rendition of a beautiful piece.
Absolutely lovely.
Stunning.
Bravo all
Absolutely sublimely beautiful - bravo all, and profuse thanks.
The local church choir I sing with got lumbered with singing this yesterday. Truly awful piece which none of the choir liked. Two members of the choir gave up during rehearsals as they could not stand it. Wish I had. This was commisioned by the Royal College of Church Music for the Jubilee but was not sung at St Pauls or Windsor castle chapel!
It was sung at St Paul's in a different service actually!!! I'm so sorry you didn't like it but respect your opinion. Wells' stunningly beautiful recording of it literally made me well up. This anthem has been taken up by around 700 choirs all over the commonwealth and has meant a huge amount to so many, and has without doubt been a huge and universal success for the Royal School of Church Music, who commissioned it from me to celebrate their Royal Patron, QEII. This above comment just goes to show that you can't please everyone all the time - but I know as writer that the piece has integrity for what it was aiming to do. All best, with respect - Thomas Hewitt Jones
How very sad to feel the need to express such a negative response to something which is so positive and, in my opinion, beautifully uplifting.
@@thomashewittjones Thank you for composing this anthem for the historic occasion. It captures the words of The Queen most beautifully, and reflects Her Majesty's values of service and compassion. I sang that at Wells Cathedral in the choir of Te Decet Hymnus on the Jubilee Sunday, and thought it most touching.
@@quentinma6264 Thank you Quentin, it means a huge amount, and the RSCM are very delighted with the take-up of this anthem. Thank you so much for singing it, and all the very best from all of us involved in this project. Thomas
Wonderful! So fervent. Edit: RIP Queen Elizabeth II.
I remember this during the first months of the first lockdown. As a chorister of a church choir - I absolutely loved this version of this hymn. I strongly believed that we would get back into it.
Dare I ask the cost of the rebuild ?
Looks like 2 million.
This brings back memories....of a good time..thank you.
I want to be an anglican.
Great to see kids smiling through the pandemic. Joy to the world.
This is probably my favourite Christmas hymn (or in the top 3 at least…)
