InDesign Script: Parallel Texts Engine
One common layout configuration for academic books consists of a side-by-side translation (e.g. original text recto, translation verso), with footnotes to the translation spanning the entire spread.
This can be a difficult layout for book designers, especially for long books, because the translation appearing on any given spread must exactly match the original text facing it, while space must be left on both sides of the spread for any footnotes.
This video demonstrates a custom InDesign script that is built to handle this complex, multi-text configuration.

How to work around InDesign's ScriptUI dropdown list bug, with particular emphasis on Mastermatic
Просмотров 862 месяца назад
Recent versions of InDesign (I haven't checked, but probably at least since 2020) have a nasty bug when it comes to ScriptUI dropdown lists. If a list contains more entries than can be shown on the screen, it becomes impossible to select those entries the normal way. This is a real problem for scripts like Mastermatic, which rely on the user being able to select any paragraph style they have cr...
How To Fit Column Width to Content in InDesign?

In Excel, it's easy: Double-click the column border and the width of the column changes to fit the text. But not in InDesign. In this video, you will see a new InDesign script that adds this basic functionality to InDesign. You will learn how to select one or more columns in InDesign and run the scri...

Auto Character Styles (www.id-extras.com/products/auto-character-styles/) is an Adobe InDesign add-on to automatically create character styles from local text overrides. Center Columns in Table

Can I make master text frame in indesign like 3b2 ..?
Hello. I'm not familiar with 3b2, although I have heard of it vaguely. So I can't answer that question, I'm afraid. Can you explain in a little more detail?
@id-extras in 3b2 I designed 2 textbox one for main text .. 2nd to footnotes.. when in need footnotes in any page I will paste the footnotes text .. the footnotes will be continue .. This is the master frames in 3b2
My English so bad .. I'm sorry but I thank you for you content in this channel 💜 💓
Now it should be called GameMaker Pro 🙂
"All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players."
If the paragraph styles use specific names, such as "Chapter," "Head," "Section," etc., you can create a style group, called for example, "Mastermatic." Place all styles will using in Mastermatic inside this group, and push it to the top of InDesign styles list. This ensures the styles appears at the beginning of the dropdown list.
Yes, that should work too. Again, the whole issue is only relevant to documents that have several dozen paragraph styles.
Nothing is written as detailed. Is it suitable for Adobe Indesign 2024 version? Which languages are included in the plugin? I wanna make translation from Turkish to English. Is it possible?
thanks so much m8
Hi! Great Video. It's _almost_ what I'm trying to do. Do you think this is also possible using tik-boxes (and giving each box a value - these values should be summed up, for every box that is being checken in the pdf later).
Nice, is your solution available for Adobe indesign server too ?
Hi! Yes, there is an InDesign Server version available for Fit Text. Please get in touch (admin [at] id-extras.com) to discuss.
What if I wanted all the names on the outer edge of each page instead of under the picture box?
Any idea on how to do this in Microsoft Word?
Nope, sorry, this is for InDesign only...
Wonderful Script Ariel. Thanks for sharing
Would you consider adding "simplified field notation" calculation like acrobat has? I guess with the drop down box for calculations there isn't an option to do a mixture of say adding and subtracting for a field calc.
I'll consider adding it in a future update. Meanwhile, though, it is very easy to add a custom script to add and substract field values. Post a question on the id-extras.com forum (www.id-extras.com/forum/) and I'll try to answer there.
Great. Do the script launched, can't find on your site ?
Hi Akshaya. Version 1.0.0 is now available (although it's not on the website). A direct purchase link ($59/year) is here: www.id-extras.com/?wp_pg_gateway=stripe_co_sca_subsc&is_eStore_co=1&no_empty_check=1&wppg_process_checkout=1&prod_id=112
Hi, from where dis you get the detach script? Or you can detach the paragraphs by hand without a script? Or I am missing something?
Hi! The Detach script is part of Footwork. In the main UI there are two tabs, and one of them is dedicated to the detach functions. By the way, Detach has been upgraded a lot since this tutorial was made. Full details here: www.id-extras.com/footwork-3-major-update/
source code
Great! When will it be available?😃
Hi Scott. I just need to package it up. Should be quite soon.
Can you confirm that the names and photos go from left to right - versus up and down in the columns?
Yes, they go left to right, then top to bottom, just like plain text would (they flow inline with text). Of course, I think with the CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) version of InDesign it's possible to set up a text frame that would flow top to bottom. In that case, they would follow the flow of the frame. But in the English version, it's as you say.
Thank You.
Thank you for the video. Is it possible to FIND styles (paragraph or character) in older versions of InDesign (in which there is no "Find Style" option) ?
The "Auto-Character Styles" add-on that is linked to in the description above comes with this feature (it's bundled as a free script along with the main product). It should work also with older versions of InDesign. Otherwise, it is always possible to find a character style the old-fashioned way in InDesign, using the Find/Change dialog.
Care to share how you achieved this?
It was just a silly April Fool's gag. Take a good look at the computer date!
@@id-extras I googled this specific question because I’m having a major issue at work, going back-and-forth between InDesign and Illustrator, and came across this video. It’s not April 1st anymore. This isn’t a funny joke.
@@benjaminallison4644 Well, no harm done, surely? Also, there is a serious side to this video: It demonstrates that it is possible to add new menus to InDesign's standard interface. (In this case the menu items are non-functional, but they could be made to run a custom script or command, though not, unfortunately, Illustrator effects!)
Is it possible to have the footnotes placed on either the left-, or righthand side of the page? Still following, or in synch with the main text - Thanks!
Hi Tycho. No, for now the only layout available with Footwork is footnotes on the bottom.
???
Take a good look at the date this was uploaded!
Is this script still supported? I ordered it today (and paid) and it's version 1.0.0, can't get it to work, and no reference to it on your webpage.
Hi, Yes, the script is still supported, and should be running fine with ID 2022.
Thanks for the information. After watching It wanted to ask you something that was bothering me. I have prepared two texts. the first one is the main article and the second one is an additional information related to the article. Both have their own sources. I wanted to place them in separate text frames. And when I do so they both have their own footnotes beneath them. How can i have the sources of the two texts listed in just one footnote? I highly appreciate your help.
Footwork would let you have the source of each text listed in its own regular InDesign footnotes, but you wouldn't be able to merge those two sets of footnotes into a single set, I'm afraid.
@@id-extras thank you
Is there a way to make this work on a data merge with thousands of pages? I.e. Not having to assign an object style to each text frame.
This video is great. i'm request for data merge auto mation setup file upload.
Tôi ở Việt Nam, có cách nào để mua sản phẩm này không nhỉ?

Glad you liked it!
Interesting. This could help me with a project I'm working on. I will try the trial and see what it does first.
Fantastic just what I was looking for!
Do you have an American number that I can reach you at?
how do you download free scripts footworks?
This is not a free product.
@@id-extras Hi You email me to use it. I am Iran I can't buy. Thank you
If you want to set a footnote in full width in double column fram.. it is easy... Type > Document Footnotes > Layout > Span Footnotes Across Columns. or Menu Type > Document Footnote Options > Layout: Span column on/off. this is free in indesing cc 2018 or other cc
@@AyanaYula what if my main text frame is single column, but i want the footnotes to be in 2 columns? for example I have 8 footnotes on a page and i want them in 2 columns, 1-4 in first columns, 5-8 in second. Thanks and regards.
@@moiz217 This can be done manually, but I'm not sure how to do it automatically. For this, you can use some third-party plugins or scripts developed for InDesign.
Lost me at Fit Text. I don't have that script in InDesign as a default. I have very few scripts, actually. Where can I find "FitText"?
Hi Judy: It's not a script that comes with InDesign. It's available on our website for purchase here: www.id-extras.com/products/fit-text-to-frame/ Get in touch if you have any other questions. Ariel
friends; Is it possible to include two types of footnote numbering in the same book? For example: Translator footnotes in numbers Footnotes writer stars Please advise
Hi Ismail, Essentially yes, it's possible to have any numbering you like, or even no numbering at all with Footwork. The full answer depends a bit on the layout you're thinking of. I'll be happy to continue the conversation by email. Get in touch through the Contact page on Id-Extras.com.
@@id-extras Thank you very much for your quick response Dear friend, I am working on a book of several chapters, each chapter contains two types of footnotes, a footnote to the translator that begins with the numbering of 1 within each chapter. And There is another type, which is the footnotes of the original author of the book, and I want to number them in a bullets. I hope you have any advice to assists me.
How do you do that then?
Hey Tanja, You need to download the Translate plugin for InDesign, which you can do here: www.id-extras.com/products/translate. Install that in InDesign. It's easy to use, and there's also a help file here: www.id-extras.com/help/usingtranslate/
