First start of a rebuilt Onan engine, from an experimental aircraft!
Просмотров 4,1 тыс.5 лет назад
Onan B43G engine. 18-20HP opposed twin engine. The aircraft was a Rutan Quickie. I replaced the smaller stator flywheel with a larger tractor flywheel as i did not have a propeller for the prop shaft.
Is that a CCKB? What carb is that ? Ty
Nice!! Where do you get parts?
Are parts still available?
How did You adjust the Air mixture screw on that nikki carburetor? any help would be greatly welcome. tom
I just started rebuilding ONON engines. Amazing beefy engines... Working on a B48 P220 20hp opposed twin for a friend. Challenging complete rebuild...
Sweet sounding engine. Not a lot of valve noise either.
Hi, are you still rebuilding Onan engines for customers? If so what is the name of your business? I have a tired B43G.
Whats the chance that you have the wiring diagram for one of those? I have a t260g that I need to get running.
Make a video on how to check the valves on a onan 16 if you can
Nice.
Is there a way I can get into contact with you I think I got a 60s onan sureweld welder and I have some motor questions. Thanks
Do yours idle high
Have same motor needs rebuilt it smoke trew carb cut grass then lose power then throw it in neutral builds up power cut some more then same lose power trow it in neutral it builds back up on and on is it rings
I did not mean to copy your wheels fyi
Those wheels are some of the best-looking wheels for a miata, awsome build
Where are you located
Do they sell performance parts for these so that I can get rid of the governor eventually I want to do a mud mower build on a sears suburban garden tractor and if it comes with one of these I might want to do a performance build on it to save a little money
Do have a B43G Onan 18 hp for John Deere 318
that has to be one of the cleanest looks I've ever seen on a Death Kart. that rear Splitter/wing caps the rear so much better. Nice build.
I have an onan performer 24xsl but is there any good site for engine parts like valve springs etc? Exhaust parts not that big of a deal for me.
That engine won’t be able to power an aircraft it’s too heavy and doesn’t run fast enough unfortunately
I thought the same but, you should take a look online it was in a light weight experimental aircraft. Which is a category used to build an aircraft without all the routine inspections required for larger airframes.
@@parkerstutsman7181 interest ming
@@hunter7476 I forgot to mention it used to have a prop shaft on it when I started the rebuild but I swapped it out for the heavy flywheel with the orange ring on it.
@@parkerstutsman7181 nice good running engines when properly tuned
The Quickie (QAC Q1) was designed around this exact engine in the late 1970s by famed aeronautical engineer Burt Rutan (Voyager, Beech Starship, SpaceShipOne). It originally flew on the Onan 16HP version, with a maximum weight of 460Lb and a climb rate of under 400fpm. It was quickly changed to the 18HP engine. Gross Wt. 480Lb, Climb rate 420fpm. Later, it used the 20HP B48G modified with shaved heads and higher compression, bumping power to a "claimed" 22.5HP, instead of this 18Hp B43G motor. This later model was and is the definitive version and the only model that performed reasonably well at higher elevations while carrying a larger pilot (95 percentile male) Specs: B48G/22.5HP, maximum weight of 520LB, Climbed nearly 550fpm. But, it maximum gross wt. was advertised 20% heavier than originally designed and I suspect that was borrowing from its structural safety factor. As the airframe was still the same all along, from the 460lb initial version. (They had/have nylon plastic wheels with real tires and inner tubes, and hand operated e-brake handle that applies pressure directly to the tire treads, while landing at interstate speeds of 60-65mph. Very not smart).
4:45 we do it in one day.
What size tires and wheels were you running ?
Those were 15s with 235/45 I belive
That's a neat little engine. It's like half of a Volkswagen beetle motor. I might build a utility vehicle for the backyard with one of these.
Or an ultralight aircraft. That's a good motor to use.
Actually im in the process of putting an onan engine on a gokart, big issue with mine is the driveshaft is 1-1/2 inch in diameter and the biggest clutches and torque converters only come in 1 inch diameter. So as of right now im seeing how id run a jackshaft with a torque converter.
@@absolutelyphucked150 A torque converter? That would have to be one heck of a go kart. Sounds like you're putting an automatic transmission in it.
@@Cat-fy5lw these engines are heavy duty cast iron and weigh a lot not running fast enough or light enough for an aircraft
Hey man like your content keep it up. Im building a cart my self while also creating content. Are yu on miata carts of murika? Facebook group
Thanks! I am not I actually recently sold the cart. I am in the planning stages of a mini cooper cart build which I want to video from the start. I screwed up and didn't film miata content until the end really.
I couldnt film either from the start but ur cart clearly added traction to ur channel. I hope thing go good for your channel. Ill help be a day one.. hell my channels struggling as well haha hopefully i figure something out to pop off. Takes a great start to get the ball rolling!
Just saw this roll through Arkansas City Kansas this afternoon
It is off to a new home, sold it today
@@parkerstutsman7181 ahh, any idea what city they were headed to
@@bencox1160 should be in Arkansas city
@@parkerstutsman7181 what u sell it 4?
@@ericworthington7299 2,800 which is fair for the hard life that car endured lol
¡Gracias!
dont see how you are going to use a generator carb with no mixture control in an aircraft.
Not sure what carb was used on the aircraft, this was not going to find its way back on one. The other issue was using a flywheel on this engine while the aircraft uses a propeller and propeller shaft.
Got mine for 800 drive it five hours from Rogers ar to cherry valley ar lol
How much are you selling on an engine.?
I sold the fully built green motor for 850+shipping. Which was less than it should have been but I made some money.
Awesome video dude! U deserve more subscribers!
I have a miller welder with that motor with 1290 hours , question is that a good motor, and how much lite is left in my motor in your criteria
Life not lite
I belive the motors are very reliable, they are simple and built well. They used these engines in kit aircrafts. I've seen many people say they get 1750-2000 hours. The issue is lubrication of the cylinder walls. Being opposed and laying on the side rings wear out and can cause cylinder wall wear.
Thanks
Change oil and filter and air filter and do maintenance and take care of it and it will outlast you
i get the vibe that this was inspired by the hoonigans shart kart
Some of it is, alot of people have done exo karts I wanted to put my own style into it. Also keeping the windshield and legality of it with indicators was important
the green looks good. What's it going in or from?
Most of the time they go in older john deere tractors. I tried to match the john deere green it was really close.

Do u have a p20 for sale?
Unfortunately not sir
hahahahahahahah!!! "Wow!!! How much did that cost????" - unimpressed grandma - I'm a fan of turbos, but man, a K series would be fun!! Great videos dude, we need more to watch!!
Thanks, I actually picked up the miata for $1000 in east Arkansas. Everything together it was about $3500.
Parker Stutsman that’s a great project man! We paid $900 for ours and probably have another $450-500 in it with roll cage tubing and bits and pieces. We’ve been fortunate to have some people donate parts and a tire sponsor keep us in good tires!
Let's go Bro!!!! i'm digging it!! We need to get the karts together!
including the one on the bottom of the oil pan
Correct. Just for the startup I left the sheilds off the bottom . The front shroud is enough for a short run. The final assembly had all the sheilds installed
im kinda late seeing this video but you mentioned not installing the shields i believe these are necessary for the fly wheel to route cooling air across the heads etc.?
awesome, Aol: www.professionalfirefighterlawnservice.net/projects
You build these Onan engines? Do you have a website or contact info? I’m building a few and always looking for parts - like exhaust tubes for the CCKB.
Unfortunately I only buit 3 of them after I found one and then bought a bulk lot of 4 engine in rough shape that needed some work. I had to order all the parts on ebay. Exhaust components were the hardest to find because the steel seemed to thin for use as headers.
parker stutsman yeah :) it’s such a dumb thing to get stuck on too so unless you have a welder, pipe bending skills, and the tools to cut the flanges it’s a major pain. I’m putting a points box on now and it’s so unclear how to adjust everything to get it right.
What size is the shaft on these
1.25
mine is 1-1/2, i also think i have a different onan engine though.
The p series’s have usually 1-1/8
Have you rebuilt any of these engines? I have a p218g I’m possibly looking at getting rebuilt
I've rebuit 2 and restored parts for sale. I haven't done them in a while now. I have a miata I'm almost done with and 2 polaris ATVs that had engine rebuilds now. If you believe the engine has just typical wear then it would be good to rebuild. Its when you have to buy a new block that the choice is hard. I'm not sure I am ready for another project just yet.
parker stutsman yeah the blocks good just needed pistons rings and the cylinders honed. It smoked
I am guessing this as an 18 horsepower ?
Is that the same one as the onan performer 18 xsl see I don't know because it didn't have one side cover to it just the front cover I need to know if if uses points or a condenser on the coil My onan gt 19.9 does have points and a condenser but not the 18
Parker, I have a P224G that ran fine before it lost compression. Reworked the motor put it back together and I do not get ignition. I have spark, compression and fuel but no Bang. even with starting fluid it does not run. Do you think I have the timing off? I am reasonably sure that the timing marks where lined up on cam to crank. I will double check but any other ideas please ?
Does it use a pickup at the flywheel or points like my engine?
@@parkerstutsman7181 pickup at the crank shaft. I have taken the plugs and zip tide them to the muffler pipes. Crank it over and both plugs have spark. I see plenty of fuel at the plugs.........
@@vincentprocaccini i feel like it has to be due to timing. But one thing about these engines that you won't notice easily is if the cank and cam are not timed correctly. Its easy to tell by taking a head off and turning the engine slowly. If you can clearly see each stroke and get to the ignition pickup point on the crank just before top dead center with both valves closed you can verify you are close. I would be willing to say you may be seeing ignition just before your intake at the end of an exhaust stroke.
@@vincentprocaccini also reason I say its hard to notice is because your valves will never impact the cylinder head which makes this a great engine to learn to rebuild. Hard to really damage much.
parker stutsman copy. Thanks so much for monitoring your site. I will give it a close look. Thank you
I have one in my case 1816 skid steer. I was wondering if they make a conversion kit to convert it to electronic ignition instead of points?
you can use a flywheel and pickup on a points engine and it will function in the same manor as the points. You will have to ensure your flywheel has the pits in the back of it.
