    I really like the comparison of Alastor to Adam and Valentino. All 3 characters do terrible things, but the things Alastor does are more playful and fantasy-like, for lack of better words. Adam is just a misogynistic jerk, of which there are unfortunately plenty in the world, and abuse and SA like what Val does are very real problems too, but how many times have you heard of a demon serial killer who broadcasts their terrorizing throughout hell? It's much less realistic, so it makes Alastor seem less evil compared to real-life situations and more likable, if that makes sense. He's a villain, but he's not an outright asshole, so that makes it easier to love him

      Exactly. People somehow tend to gravitate towards him getting deeper connection to the hazbin cast, but while the attachment is growing, it's not deepening. Think of it like a collection of your favorite mugs that you bought because they were pretty and that's all they were, not one of them was a gift from a special person, none connect with a special occasion, they are just pretty and you like them. You wouldn't like if they broke, but you wouldn't cry over it. That's what the cast is to him. Like a mugs collection. Or even more. Like a hobbyist potter, making a mug from clay just because they can, just because they are feeling like trying out a new shape, but never letting those dry and be used, just smashing them down after they've achieved the desired shape because you don't actually need a pot in that shape, you just wanted to try making one and it'd be useless for you so you smash it to make a new shape with the same clay because it'd be wasteful of a good material to let it sit and collect dust. That's what he feels. That's what he does. Satisfaction being his end goal of attachment. It's honestly so amazing to watch.

    I feel like another aspect of what makes him so great is the fact that we know his basic likes and dislikes on a personal level, all while still being in the dark as to any deeper feelings on his part. It really is the perfect way to maintain that distance, because folks can know that he likes whiskey, jazz, sassing others, etc, and it feels like they know him, but he can maintain that persona (which I'd say is the real thing, just the shallower level of it) while keeping his true motivations under wraps.

    So an interesting background detail in the show, and even said in the past, Alastor never attacks someone innocent. In the show the only time we see him go after someone is when they're actively being a threat, or an overlord. Overlords are generally worse than normal sinners since they own souls, and often exploit said souls (i.e. Valentino and even Alastor) Viv has also compared him to Dexter Morgan in the past.

    I have to disagree, I feel like he was much more likeable and interesting in the pilot. • @helenanilsson5666
      @helenanilsson5666 20 дней назад

      Aight, gonna have to disagree with your disagreement. Most importantly, I think that Alastor is set up as a *long term* antagonist/threat. From my understanding, Viv has a very long story planned out that will span many seasons beyond the one released and the second that is currently worked on. A key to planning a long series is *villain management and threat scaling.* You start with relatively easy villains, and save the most intimidating villain for the series finale. For the first season, we had Adam. Funny jerk asshole that can set up the stakes between heaven and hell, but too clowny to work as a long term antagonist - instead his death can inspire a more dangerous future villain. For season two, we're apparently getting Vox. I' guessing that much like Adam was used to introduce the heaven conflict, Vox will be utilized to flesh out the power structures in hell but ultimately he's a disposable stepping stone on our way to greater enemies. Where *exactly* Alastor is on the villain danger ranking scale is still slightly ambiguous. He's powerful, but there is someone out there that managed to put a chain on him, so potentially that person is going to be the ultimate villain (or we'll be led to believe that that person is the ultimate villain, only to find out after that villain is defeated that Alastor without restrains is the ultimate villain). Considering that the show has already revealed and made clear Alastor's intent to "guide" and manipulate Charlie, he's definitely established as an evil advisor type of character, but he's quite successfully masking it to the other characters (or at least Charlie) by playing the role as a chaotic anti-hero protecting the hotel.

    • @ismaelismael8543
      @ismaelismael8543 20 дней назад

      @@helenanilsson5666 the thing is that doesn't really work when Adam was demonstrably more powerful than Alastor and Vox combined and both Charly and Lucifer are literally the most powerful characters in the series. Unless they introduce a massive deus ex machina or some other clumsy plot conveniences, power scaling in this show has eliminated any potential for tension in regards to the villains.

    I totally agree with everything you said in this video. I actually like how ambiguous he's been in s1. He's done plenty of good things for Charlie and the hotel although it's to serve his own agenda or part of his deal. He's shown to be manipulative, sadistic and petty which are typical traits for a villain or in this case antagonistic protagonist. Even so a lot of people including myself still love him because he's such a complex character. His top traits for me are that he is mysterious and charismatic. Also I'm glad you pointed out that we haven't yet seen the full extent of Alastor's true power. He seemed really confident he could take down Adam and maybe he could but he didn't expect to be overpowered by him because of his deal.

    Great commentary, I love how you mentioned the romanticization of the vintage over corporate progress. Alastor has been a fictional crush of mine for about a year. He has that folklore monster meets gothic vintage gentleman vibe. He's frightening, methodical, resilient, deeply insecure and vicious, but reasonable enough he wont eviscerate you unless you truly cross him or get in the way of his ambitions. He's passionately feral under the surface but there so much more to him, and his witty sass makes him fun to be around. And Alastor being ace even adds to his appeal and illusion of being safer, because while he is predatory and Machiavellian, he's not lustfully so like the three V's. I think that's some of the things that make him so likeable. I also like his genuine fondness for Nifty, Rosie and even Mimzy. ☺

      For real like.. WAS HE EVEN NEEDED IN THE SHOW IN GENERAL?? The main cast is fairly put together, they all contribute - Charlie is ofc the protagonist, so Lucifer and Lilith immidiently pick up relevance. Adam is the villain of the first season, the 3 vees also needed to be established in S1 so we wouldn't need to waste time introducing those suckers later on, risking the audience not caring for 'em. Sir Pentious was brought back into the main series to show off how the whole redemption plan isn't a waste, plus he served very well as comedic relief. Now, Angel's the second patient, he also has a backstory unrelated to the hotel, yet it doesn't interfere with the main story at all. Then there's Vaggie, Charlies love interest, its self explanatory why she's in the plot. Lastly there's Husk and Niffty, both don't take up a whole lot of the shows runtime, Husk is the voice of reason for Angel, while Niffty is just a comedic relief. They all are somewhat tied together, and they all interact with each other! On the other hand, Alastor has max like.. 1 LINE OF DIALOGUE with all the other main characters that aren't Charlie, and whenever he's on screen he's just doing something completly unrelated. In episode 1 everyone had to be presented to the new viewers ofc, so I won't count that in. In episode 2, the Vees had their time to shine, so obviously they had to spend an unreasonable amount of time showing how Vox and Al had banter with each other 🤯🤯. Then in ep 3 with the overlords meeting he played spy and got random info from listening in a conversation between Carmilla and Zestial... And every single moment of him and Lucifer in episode 5 was unnecessary, geniuenly, what did it add to the story?? A better alternative would've been making the quote on quote conflict between Charlie and her dad not crap, or they could've cut the episode into a plot A and plot B formula, shove Charlie and Lucifer into the main spotlight and then give some other character that deserves to be fleshed out the plot B. Lastly, Al showed up in episode 7 and 8, at first to contract a deal w/ Char Char, to then get dragged into the Cannibal Town and have a chat with Rosie, staying late to take part in the song for some reason. Finally, in ep 8 he fought against Adam so he'd be weakened for the next season- Oh my god that was a TON! If someone thinks that that's a reasonable amount of screentime, just compare it to any other characters screentime. On top of it, most of it wasn't even needed for the plot as it barely pushed it forward. What. a. waste. Goshh- Freaking Vaggie had like no time for herself in this season, even though her backstory is actually complex and investing. They should've spend more time on it, so that in the end it wouldn't just come off rushed and flat. Anyways, I'm done with my Essay, hope it gets graded soon>>

      @roxycauldwell544 How you some people can think Alastor is like Dexter or anti hero and that has genuine friends like wtf? First the comic about sheep demon how some people talk about it it doesn't have to be cannon anymore not to mention Alastor still left sheep demon traumatized and didn't care if she was sad or in danger since trauma can be dangerous too. Second they are definitely not his genuine friends like Nifty Mimzy and Rosie also because it also reminds me of my boyfriend when we met each other and we were in the HH group I also thought that my boyfriend had friends etc. And that he also felt something for them cause acted like that but he didn't he just manipulated and pretended that something felt for them like a psychopaths do or like Alastor does. Third It's really important not to be blindsided by characters like Alastor and not to overlook his manipulative and self-centered nature and especially not to believe everything Vivzie. some of the creators may lie or make up. Mainly when I saw her interviews nowhere it was confirmed that Alastor is like Dexter and the anti hero she didn't fully confirm it, she didn't say something like yes it's him or that it's true etc. Especially when we have experience with similar behavior in real life regarding manipulation. Or what about Hans from Frozen? He seemed he can genuinely care for someone too even if there were small details too he doesn't but still seemed he truly cares but then was found how perfectly manipulated everyone. Alastor is certainly not the type of "anti-hero" that Dexter is trying to help. On the contrary, for him it is primarily about his own need for power and entertainment. His dealings with others are completely manipulative without sincere friendships. The comparison of Alastor with the character of Dexter certainly does not stand: - Dexter's motivation is to protect loved ones and kill evil people, while Alastor is a pure psychopath with no feelings - Dexter has a code of ethics and makes sure he doesn't leave bad people alive - Alastor kills for fun - The experience of sheep demon comic shows that Alastor has no empathy and doesn't care how damaged the other is - The trauma of such an event can have lifelong consequences, something Dexter would never allow. The comparison with Dexter fits more with Adam and especially Vaggie, where motivation and concern for others match. Adam seemed to care for Lute Vaggie cares for people too, especially Vaggie but It definitely doesn't sit well with Alastor. Alastor has pleasure of to do violence or manipulate others - he is a purely self-centered psychopath regardless of social norms. Mainly Vivzie probably never fully confirmed and if yes why people have to always trust Vivzie? Do forget that creators can lie too? For example even Thomas creator of Marinette from miraculous he confuses us too into thinking she is: "good perfect pure kind hero without flaws" but none of that it's true it's superficial. It is necessary to approach the claims of the creators critically and not be subject to blind trust. In particular, the following points are important: - Apparently Vivzie has never directly and clearly confirmed that Alastor is Dexter and an anti-hero or a mama's boy. - You can't trust everything the creators say - they can also give false informations. - Marinette's example shows that creators can manipulate the public for their own purposes. - The true nature of the characters is revealed only from their actions, not from the words of the creators, but even those actions can sometimes be twisted by creators to make it seem like they are right. It is therefore quite appropriate to approach character analyzes critically based on their actions, not on the words of the creators. And not succumb to blind impressions. Even creators can put false informations creators can lie too just that they are creators it doesn't make them more honest. It's even confirmed that Vivzie is horrible person. (Ps I don't remember where but I saw it on some videos and so on)

      @@Pomeranian690 why would Alastor care if she’s traumatized by him killing a man who was gonna abuse her? Think about this from Alastor’s own philosophy, not your own. He grew up in a far harsher time than we did, and he’s a literal sociopath; he saved her and got rid of trash; that’s “justice” to Alastor. Alastor isn’t friends with them yet, but he admitted to one of his vassals, Nifty, that he could get accustomed to them; that he COULD become genuine friends with them. Alastor had no reason to lie about that to Nifty since she’s under his thumb, and Alastor also had no reason to continually bail Mimzy out of her troubles, which is basically confirmed by Husk to be a repeated occurance. He gets nothing out of helping her; he just clearly has a soft spot for her. This time he can’t afford to come to her rescue all the time, cuz he’s got other important plans, but he’s been clearly doing so for the better half of a century. Alastor isn’t an anti-hero out of altruism; he’s one out of disgust and desire for entertainment. Alastor is an extreme sociopath; he’s not a “good person” out of some form of benevolence, but he doesn’t claim to be one. He doesn’t want redemption or believe it’s possible for anyone. In that regard he’s similar to Adam. He’s a self admitted bad person; but bad people can still serve the narrative role of an anti-hero. If anything he’s a more realistic take on what an antihero ACTUALLY is/would be than Dexter. Also, Alastor does have standards for killing; that’s not mutually exclusive with killing for fun. He kills for fun but only lets himself do so when he has an excuse/reason. One of the things Alastor values most is control over himself, and that includes over his own desire to kill. Alastor being a pure psychopath and being an antihero isn’t mutually exclusive; if you interpret his positions by what he’s disgusted by, and what facets of life he fetishes or finds humorous, or respectable, then you can understand how a man with extreme sadism, and no full sense of love, except perhaps for a select few people, can make himself a set of guiderails that lead to him being in the role of an antihero.

    I feel that Alistair is a very beautifully written character. One that I would say could be iffy. If you could ever be redeemed it would be neat to try to watch them play that narrative later in the future, I would love to see where he would be the last one if it were possible to redeem Alistair, on the fact that he isn’t one of my favorite characters and I would hate to see him gone too early unless they are going to play some part with the heaven sinners heaven until heaven

    I couldn’t agree more to this video! Alastor is such a compelling character. I am intrigued and excited to see what the writers have in store for him in the next season. I also was so hesitant to watching this show because of the fanatic fan base this show has but I finally gave it a chance a few weeks ago and am so glad I did. I’ve watched it 10 times over (guess I’m a fanatic now hahaha) I truly love how well written these characters are and I really enjoyed deep diving into each characters background/lore.

    Hi! love this video (: I'm new getting into edits and I'm having trouble figuring out where to get the best quality clips to use. I've been using only youtube at the moment because I'm not sure where to start looking and googling is also tricky. Any help would be greatly appreciated! thank you <3

    just realised now how good the ending to this was. Jet says men look at there past when they die searching for meaning to their life and cutting Spikes last word to him saying bang as he shoots the harmonica shows he found something. Now u could see he realised the unaging guy was right and he felt a burden lift from him when he died but I'd like to believe he found meaning to his life in helping him and realised how many people he actually helped throughout his travels directly and indirectly, and maybe he realise he really was alive all along and wasn't just cowboy scum and thats why he smiles...I'd like to think that.
