The Path Through The Woods
США
Добавлен 2 июл 2021
I am a hiker and backpacker. Most of my shorter trips are in New York (Adirondacks) or Pennsylvania. Videos from recent trips will appear here as I can get them up. My AT thru hike videos are also posted here as I make them in a playlist. Infrequently, I will post a topical video as well.
Days 136 and 137 - Abol Pines to Katahdin
Days 136 and 137 of my AT hike. Started at Abol Pines campsite, camped at The Birches and summited Katahdin. Descended via the Abol Trail and ended the day at the Appalachian Trail hostel in Millinocket Maine.

Tom, I love you so much and I will miss you forever. You were a special brother to me. I’m glad you passed away doing what you loved. Now you are free to hike as much as you want in the hills of Heaven. Lynda
I am not a hiker. I did peak Mt Katahdin in the early "90"s. Not bad for a guy who is legally blind. Still, It's the mental toughness it takes that impresses me so. Best wishes on your journey. Be safe.
I hope you had a good summit. My boys and I summited on 8/7/24. perfect weather for us
Unfortunately my summit day started with rain and transitioned to dense fog. Could not see the summit sign until I was almost right up to it.
Congratulations on stepping into Baxter State Park!!
I especially liked being able to get ice cream at the camp store at Abol Bridge. :)
Congratulations making it to Monson!! Good luck on the rest of your journey, real proud of you!
Shaw’s was an interesting place to zero at. The resupply options were great. And sooo many hikers staying there.
I like views with trees in the for ground! 🤓
Beautiful views
Congrats on all those 4000 footers!, next one is a doozy for sure! Good travels my friend
Happy to have those out of the way. Enjoying the more mellow terrain.
Hope your managing well in the heat we are getting in the North East this summer
The humidity has been tough!
Hey Atomic. What is that yellow device hanging inside your hammock/tent?
That is a headlamp. I use it when I need to leave the hammock in the middle of the night :).
Hi Atomic, I am really appreciative of your videos, I miss the trail! You are hiking an amazing hike!!
I truly appreciate your encouragement! It means a lot. Thank you!!!
Do you think this is a dog friendly hike ? Thanks
The parts that require a bit of scrambling probably not unless the fog lives rock climbing (or you can carry the dog through those parts. Up to the point where the trail branches off to Marcy should be okay for a dog. Good luck.
Enjoy!
Bethel was a nice town to zero in!
Atomic - your comments about the young hikers passing you by so easily reminded me of how you have had to wait on my slow self while hiking in Pennsylvania and Tennessee. You are doing great. Of course my "hiking" abilities are more comparable to strolling!
Seems like I need more breaks than others. But, then I get to enjoy the trail views more. It seems like the younger hikers just glance and go on. :)
Hi Atomic, please remember Southern Maine is tough. At least it was the toughest section for me. You are doing well - safe travels! Insect
Thank you for the kind words! The southern Maine section of the AT has inspired me to make a future video “Was Myron Avery a Sadist?” ;)
Congratulations Atomic! Southern Maine and the whites are indeed slow. You are doing great!
New Hampshire is the Granite State. We don't take it for granite!😂
I remember that sign on your desk
And that’s why I videoed it :)
❤❤❤❤❤❤
NH makes sense. Enjoy & take care of the knees 😊
As you know I have no personal knowledge of the AT , but NH and heading north in summer months sounds like better hiking weather than Virginia heading south. Be safe and don't fall down anymore Atomic!
Stop by Hampton, NH on your way out here
The train back to trail stops at White River Junction, VT ( a stones throw from where I got off trail in Hanover, NH). A stop at Hampton would have to occur after getting off trail :(. BTW the kid will be doing an internship for a NPS historical site in MA this summer ( part of reason why waiting until June to go back). Will be in touch if I can get to Hampton at some point.
Very dedicated to go back and hike that section you missed! Good to see you back on the AT! Happy MemoriaL Day weekend Atomic!
WOW. 1000 miles! Very impressive!
Beautiful sunset at the salt log gap but looked really buggy.
Cool
Hope your knee is OK
Your microphone is awful
Making good progress Atomic! I enjoy the views.
It's about time you were back on the trail Atomic! Be safe and stay away from Bears.
Great to see you back on the trail!
I appreciate this video!
If I may sum up. You have made substitutions that are generally lighter. In the case of the hammock, more comfortable (and bigger) for about the same weight. is that about right?
Yes, although there was a learning curve to it. In between the old gear and the current gear there was, for example, another tent and three hammocks, two steripens, two packs and many sets of boots and now trail runners. I’d say it was more an evolution in my gear preferences on what worked best for me and what was available. Over the years I’ve dropped a bunch of pack weight. Thanks for asking.
great video thanks
Hey Atomic , looks like you are ready to get back on the AT!
NICE! Only thing I can say is to try using essential oils and herbal scents to store your clothing and sleeping bags or quilts. You can repel insects and pests while they are stored and they are also good to go when you are. Lavender, Eucalyptus, cloves, peppermint. Great video
There used to be a lean to at 4 corners. Always fantasized about staying there. Climbed Marcy-Skylight from Avalanche Lake- Lake Tear many times. Back down Van Hoevenberg trail. Climbed Haystack once as part of a 4 mountain hike (Gothics, Saddleback, Basin, Haystack) of upper Great Range. View from Haystack is spectacular.
I did Haystack back on October 25th 2023 the day I did my 21 hour hike in the Adirondacks Haystack was the 4th High Peak I did that day and Haystack alongside Redfield Gray Peak and Skylight were the 4 High Peaks I did in the hike and it was my 1st ever quadruple mountain hike
Thanks for the update......good to see you back hiking. I did finish the NPT this summer.....hit 8 days with minimal rain....haha.....keep going man
naming where you camped would help others plan their daily mileage
They were all stealth sites so didn’t really have identifiable locations. A good resource for this trail is the book ‘Backpacking New York’ by Jeff Mitchell.
Atomic, Hope you can back onto the AT soon !
Get better!
sorry to hear you had to get off trail
Thanks for the update. Curious to find out what happens to your knee. Take care of yourself.....
Keep us posted Atomic. Hope the knee heals quickly.
