It's mostly trial and error, but I've gotten better at it. I use a tool called Chaotica. It has dozens of pre-set math functions that interact with eachother, and with various parameters. Yah, I know it moves pretty slowly. The problem is really computational. Some of these (like my 10,000 days video) consist of 20,000+ individual frames. To double the speed, I'd have to render double the frames.
