    Not since Fats Navarro have we had a pianist who played to entertain rather than just impress the listener. Erroll Garner is unique in this regard. Not even pianists during these modern times play to entertain.

    I was looking for a different diminished b6 scale, the one in the Dan Haerle book. In the key of C it is c,d, eb, f, f#, g, a, b , c.

    • @HanksJazz
      @HanksJazz Месяц назад

      Dan's book does not have that scale. It's on p. 32 and it clearly has G#, no G natural. the diminished whole-half scale is: c,d,eb,f,f#,g#,a,b,c. It's not symmetrical unless it's like that.

    • @HanksJazz
      @HanksJazz Месяц назад

      @@the_eternal_student my pg 52 is the Harmonic Minor Scale. You added an F#, right? It's not diminished, but you can build the Barry Harris style spread voicings with this. Experiment. It's just an added passing tone F#...it's a little weird because you have 3 minor 2nds - F-F#, F#-G, G-Ab.

I want to hear this live in the 1980's in a pair of stoned washed jeans and high heels, eating shoe string French fries and sipping a glass of white wine and not worrying about anything.

    The opening tune is Mood Island, one of Erroll's own compositions. There were around 200 of these, Misty being the most famous but the others are all brilliant too eg No More Shadows, Dreamstreet, Dreamy, Fashion Interlude, Nervous Waltz, Gemini, Passing Through, Afinidad, Eldorado, Octave 103, Mambo Carmel, Paisley Eyes, She Walked On, Gaslight, A New Kind Of Love (All Yours), Paris Mist, Like It Is, Erroll's Theme, and many more. Such a creative genius, I could listen to Erroll all day and never get bored. He never played any tune exactly the same, he really could play in any key at any tempo. This must be an early 70s TV appearance, late in the little maestro's career. He died on 2nd January 1977 aged just 55, a Gemini Genius Gone Too Soon (that's the title of a piano piece I wrote in honour of him, I've also done one called Garneresque and one called Pittsburgh Piano Player, he is a constant source of inspiration. Like Erroll, I can't read or write music either, self taught all the way).
