Welcome, This channel features fly fishing and fly tying videos (plus some traditional bowhunting videos). As an outdoor writer for many years, I've expanded my horizons with this channel to help as many people as I can to enjoy these pursuits.
My goal is to promote fly fishing and fly tying by providing information and entertainment for beginners or experts. I still learn new things, like Euronymphing, but also want to promote traditions, like my series on tying the historical fly patterns originating in the Adirondacks.
I publish once a week and respond to all community comments and emails.
I am the author of three fly fishing books, including my new book, “The Greats of Adirondack Fly Fishing.” I also wrote the "New York Fly Fishing Guide," and "Warmwater Fly-Fishing, Finding and Catching Warm Water Species."

Hi Rob. Nice new intro to your video, cool. There no end to people’s creativity when it comes to foam bugs. And man do they catch fish! C u next time.
Glad you enjoyed the video. It is an easy fly to tie and I think you will like it.
Been there done that and want to go back again and again! It's absolutely beautiful there! Had a smile from ear to ear all day long! Checked out the Kunjamuk cave. I hope to make it all the way to Elm Lake one of these days! Thank you for sharing my friend ! 😊
Glad you enjoyed the video! There are a couple of nice paddling spots in that area.
my ears are open feel free to let me know where else because I'll be going back there this spring to doing some more paddling. Thank you!
@@BrianB1963I would suggest heading north of Speculator and paddling the Jessup River. Good spot!
Came for the fly Love the 🤟 Rush 🤟
I miss them. My favorite band!
Thanks for the demonstration. I've been wanting to tie a fly with a long abdomen like that. I just haven't done it yet. Yours turned out great.
Thanks for watching the video. Give the fly a try, it is not difficult at all to tie.
@robstreeteroutdoors8912 Will do. Thank you.
What size leader do you typically use? Planning on doing some more fly fishing for bass this year and trying to get my gear in order. Cool video!
I usually use a 9-10 foot leader with a heavy butt section (saltwater redfish leaders work well but I also tie my own) and put a small barrel swivel on the end. From that I use 6 pound fluorocarbon tippet. Thanks for watching the video!
Tom, great comment. The spray glue is a great method, and you are right it is nice to combine colors. The method I showed in the video works for me inside the house as my tying area is upstairs. Have to be careful with the fumes on the spray glue and do it outside. With the weather we've had it's been cold enough to make me want to do the whole process inside. I typically use craft store sheet foam because you can get a load of it for a few bucks compared to buying from a fly tying supplier. Given the thickness I usually have to glue it up for an extended body mayfly. You can get thicker foam now from the fly shops.
Hi Rob. Nice big foam drake pattern. If you have to glue 2 pieces together, I like to spray one side of two big pieces with adhesive then stick them together evenly and weigh them down with a book. I stock piled a bunch of colorful combos for gurglers and bass bugs. Looking forward to spring!
Do you use floating or sinking line with your streamers?
I use both. For the stream that I wade, usually a floater but I use multi-tip lines so I can switch to a sink tip for deeper pools.
Thank you, sir for taking the time to make a video for those of us in Florida who can't catch any smallmouth. So you mentioned that you're having trouble setting hooks. One thing I notice is that you have a lot of bow in your line sometimes as you hold your rod above the water too high which creates a bow in the line. Then when you set you have to get the bow out first before you have any tension to set the hook. I doubt it has anything to do with stretching of leaders. Also I noticed that for the big fish you don't get the line on the real. That's probably why the fish popped off at the fourteen minute and forty five second point. The reason you fight big fish from the reel and not with your hand is the reel helps to absorb the shock of the fish jerking its head around. Where as if you just have the line pinned to the rod with your finger there is no flexibility there.
Glad you liked the video and thanks for your observations. I think the leader stretch is a factor with smallmouths for a couple of reasons. Our smallmouths get hit pretty hard both in the river and the creek by tournament angling and spin fishermen. Up here they are leader shy and I use only 6 pound tippet in clear water. I think with the light tippet eliminating any other stretch helps, I've seen the difference. The tournament anglers typically spool their spinning rigs with braided line and use a mono leader about 4 feet long to eliminate stretch as well.
Hi Rob. Looking at last year’s stuff, Jim’s double egg looks really good to have in my box. My thanks and regards to your buddy, I’ll do my best to make them work.
I had a couple of great days on steelhead with that fly. I have a bunch of them in the fly box.
@ It looks like a good wildcard fly, definitely gonna whip some out
@@tomt5176 Good luck!
Hey Rob, Happy New Year! 🎉 I’ll be sure to have a few of these in the box for good measure.
That one is an odd fly. I think it looks like the aquatic worms that feed on rotting salmon carcasses in the Salmon River. I have seen Jimmy catch some monster steelhead with it, so I always have them in my fly box.
@ good info. I have small red midge flies, but none with a black tail.
@@tomt5176 I think what he was shooting for was a tubifex worm for this fly. Give it a try!
Been fishing Jeff’s pattern for years! It’s a great pattern that has caught many steelhead for me. Like your take on this streamer pattern !
Definitely a fly you need in your steelhead box! Glad you liked the video.
nice fly, and a beautiful tying desk👍
Thanks! The tying desk was an anniversary gift from my wife. It is a great tying desk.
Enjoy reading your article in Fly Tyer and thanks for sharing patterns
Glad you enjoyed the article and the video. Have a Happy Holiday season!
Hey Rob. I’ll be going for steelhead in February, it’ll be my first time trying for them. There’s a few guys talking about emerald shiners or minnows, so naturally I’m learning about them. Good timing for staging this pattern.
I hope the fly works for your steelhead trip. Please send me a picture if it does!
@ That would be a real good thing 👍
@@tomt5176 Steelhead for me are something that I have to drive to get to. If you hit the right day it is awesome, if not it is a learning experience. Hopefully you will hit it on a good day!
Hi Rob. Very pretty looking bug. I have lotsa gurglers in the box, but none with the rubber legs as you put together so nicely. It’s been a while since saying hello because it seems RUclips has been messing around with my subs and alerts for whatever reason. Now you’re back up on my message board. Cu next time.
Hi Tom, glad you like the bug. I am going to develop something similar for smallmouths so stay tuned. Hope you and your family have a great Holiday Season! Don't forget to go and enter the giveaway (look for the post I made with my two dogs watching Rudolph.)
@ Thanks Rob, I’ll be sure to check it out. Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and the best of health, happiness and good fishing in the New Year.
Nicely done. I think the advances to the Morris mouse are very enhancing.
Thanks. Mousing is trending lately and I hope this pattern works for you! It’s an easy fly to tie.
What is light bright?
It is called Edge Bright, it comes as a sheet and you cut a strip for the body. Most fly tying suppliers will have it.
Ive never seen another eagle craft desk
My wife got me the desk for our 20th anniversary. It is an American Lifestyles (Amish Built) that came from a furniture store in Glens Falls, New York. It is a great fly tying setup.
Looks good. Will the fly ride hook up with the I-Balz on the top of the shank ?
On a heavy salmon hook it should ride point down. The IBalz are light for their size. Great question! Hope this helps.
Good work on what looks like a fine soft hackle for steelhead.
Glad you liked it. The soft hackles are fun to make and you can get a classic steelhead fly look that makes for an effective fly, plus they are not hard to make. You may like the video on the "Smurf" soft hackle. I had a double-digit catch and release day on steelies with it.
Beautiful fly !
Thanks! It is my favorite attractor dry fly of all time. I've caught trout in a number of states with it, including Alaska.
G’morning. I’ve tied comets before just to do it and I like the green version too. That sockeye on the opening of the video is beautiful. Good stuff Rob. Oh, we got back from Maine. Been dry there all summer and we found low water with just a few salmon. We got some each day, though it wasn’t ideal fishing. Be well Rob.
The sockeye is a reproduction mount I had made from a photo. Colors are perfect. Taxidermist does a great job. Caught that fish and several more on that fly. We didn’t get to Maine this year. Sorry the conditions were off when you were there. Maybe next year!
I really loved this one!! As always great stuff!!
Thanks! Had fun putting it together. I have been checking out your videos as well, looks like we fish similar types of water in the Adirondacks.
Nice one Rob, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Saw your article about this fly in Fly Tyer. Enjoyed both the article and the video. You mentioned a bluegill pattern in the article. How does it differ from the perch? Would like for you to post a video of it for us Deep South warm water fishermen.
I will post a photo of the bluegill . I will shoot a video of it sometime in the next couple of months for you. Little different color scheme on it.
Nice, I just caught my last brookie for this year a couple days ago. Your water is similar to mine, I bet there's a brookie in every plunge pool to be caught during spring and summer hatches.
Usually in the deeper pools, but like a lot of wild trout streams, they get smaller the further you get upstream. Glad you liked the video!
Would love to see how these flys are fished, setup, boat etc
For Ed Bendl, the man who taught me these flies, he trolled with a motor boat with a sinking line in the Spring and Fall. He was in his older years and could still fly fish this way. For me, I go out in a boat in the springtime and fish them with a sinking, shooting head fly line. The water is about 4-6 feet deep on the flats in the lake that are off of the spawning streams where the smelt are running. It is an early morning/late evening fishery.
🍁 Autumn 🍂 Streams are Enchanting ! 🎣
@@brianfeeney9493 You get a brief window of time that goes by way too quickly!
I could do 6 months of Autumn 🍂
Thanks Much Rob 🍁 🎣 ☀️
@@brianfeeney9493 You are welcome. I hope you enjoyed the video.
Hi Rob. That’s something a different and cool. There’s a couple amphibians living around here: toads, frogs, salamanders and newts, hope I didn’t miss any. This one, to me, looks more like a newt, but then again, it’s all newt to me! Fish it in good health.
It is an odd fly I will give you that. It can also be made in orange like a newt . I have a photo if it will help, construction is the same. Good luck with your fall fishing!
@@robstreeteroutdoors8912Please feel free to post a pic of the newt version so we can see them both side by side
@@tomt5176 I'll post a photo today.
Curious how you rig and fish this is lakes? Time of year, depth, boats? Etc. nice video!
I usually use an interchangeable sink tip system that I made myself, but lately I fish multi tip fly lines with sink tips. Usually a mid rate sinking section. You don’t need to go to deep in the Spring and Fall.
Thanks 🎉 ROB !!!
You are welcome. Had fun on the creek this season.
Man that’s a great day on the water. I only busted out the fly rod once this summer, but steelhead season is about to heat up here in Erie Pa, and I’ll be drifting flies multiple days a week for the next 4 months.
Steelhead are a lot of fun. I've never fished in PA for them, have to try that at some point. Good luck! You should try smallmouths, probably can find them on some of your steelhead streams during the summer.
Im going tomorrow, hopefully it turns out half as good as yours
Best of luck and have fun!
Hi Rob. Nice streamer pattern. Very reminiscent of New England style tandem streamers like from Maine and definitely catch fish when trolled. Finally, I’m finished my deck project, it came out really nice and the wife is so pleased that there’s now a new dishwasher going in today. Retirement is busier than working! Keep catching some while I’m laboring here. C u next time.
Tom- I too spent the summer working on a deck. Painting and replacing boards. Thankfully, it is done and I can fish! Good luck to you as well.
Double your fun: try a Tenkara!
I did fish with a guy this year who was catching panfish on Tenkara. I haven't given it a try.
That foggy morning looked epic! Beauty river, awesome fish, thanks for sharing.
Glad you liked the video. Should be getting out in the fog again this week as the river is starting to turn on. The only problem with the fog is that you have to be careful you don't get ran over by a 40 foot yacht!
Beautiful piece of water, thanks for sharing!
Thanks! That spot is where I taught myself to fly fish as a kid.
Nice! Interesting configuration with the opposing hook directions. That's really simple, but I don't have the patience in between coffee cups. Your camera work has improved a lot. Love the guizzar playing intro too! Let me know if you need more bucktail, LOL!
It is a simple style of fly to tie. Shouldn't take too long. I've caught a bunch of trout in lakes with Ed's flies.
