Star Wars: Unlimited, the new CCG from Fantasy Flight Games, is, in my opinion, a triumph of design. Each game feels interesting and deep, without being overwhelming or needlessly complex. This video explains why I believe this game is doing everything correctly to have a bright future in this overcrowded space.

Full Review Four Cost Cards - Marvel Snap
Battle droid escort definitely seems like one of those cards where it'll be necessary for certain new strategies even if it is quite weak it promotes exploit very well! I think for starter deck cards they're really quite decent this time round!
ECL Wrecker and Poe Dameron is so strong.
Glad they've listened and hope they take the feedback and really listen to the players! Videos like this are an important communication piece between the community and the developers!
Great video, glad to hear some honest opinions about these cards and their competitive viability! Looking forward to episode 2!
Great video Al
You should look into the lonnnnng history of how FFG abuse and neglect their players and fans. Most ex players of FFG games permanently boycott. Could be the worst tabletop company still making games.
So I've heard, but they have already responded to the bad reception, which is about as good as we could hope for at this stage.
They just recently released a message on social stating that they will redress the issue from the complaints. Not sure if it's about the prizing or the lack of transparency in regards to planetary sign ups, but we'll have to wait and see. It's good that they're aware of the negative complaints though. This means they are taking this game quite seriously.
it’s better than not addressing it, but this company has been amateur hour for far too long
This is obviously fantastic to see, but as you say, we'll need to wait for what changes they're actually going to make. Acknowledging the problem is step one.
sorry compared to lorcana or One piece this is trash lol
Lorcana did start out very slowly, hopefully SWU will have a similar trajectory.
You must have misunderstood or mispoke about altering the deal. You called it "capture hate" which is the opposite of the card since its capture synergy. Dont think it changes the rating but it could be used in some cunning bossk build i feel since it becomes a 0 cost trick with jabba out and you can have a turn thats like "Death mark > Bossk flip > Relentless Pursuit > altering" just to give insurance the unit doesnt come back. Might be fine jabba leader too if you dont find dryden voss
Good catch! I did mispeak, so the Analysis and rating would be the same. Those are some very interesting applications that could certainly make the card more playable. I'll keep them in mind when I get round to building Cunning Bossk/Jabba.
You are underrating Snoke my friend, Snoke is a 4-star card at the very least and there is a strong argument for 5 stars.
I strongly considered giving him four, but we'll have to see how well he ends up performing.
I am known for making long videos, but boys I am rookie!
awesome, awesome content. need you to do one of these for every set release please
Been waiting for this to come out! He's finally risen from the grave, thank the lord 🙏
Wow! Im excited for this! Love the stars and the wars!!!
Great video! I love that the game is easy to learn, but verrrrryyy hard to master
I just managed to get a couple friends together the other day to play our first round of Twin Suns. What a fantastic time! I was always intrigued by the idea of Commander in MtG but I had long since vowed never to spend money on that game again. Twin Suns was everything I wanted from a multiplayer CCG format and more. Really, really great game!
As someone tired with MTG and not interested in Lorcana. SWU hits a beautiful sweet spot. The game and the mechanics and the gameplay are incredible. The "flavor" of the cards is on point. And the skill expression ceiling is quite high, while the game is simple enough for new players to get a grasp quickly. The starter decks come with enough cards to start playing and imo Vader is the best leader at the moment and he comes in the starter.
A Hyperspace RUclipsr. Nice.
Hearthstone at 2 locations I don't think is going to have legs. By tabletop (CCG/TCG/LCG) standards this game is phenomenally stale, non-thematic and banal. A Star Wars game where you hit each others buildings :| AND it's by Fantasy Flight, the one company you can bank on to disappoint over and over. This game gets the clearance bin treatment in year 3 the latest.
I think you're wrong and I will come back to this video in 3 years to tell you so. "Non-Thematic"? LMAO! Tell me you haven't played the game, without telling me, you haven't played the game! May the 4th be with you! LOL!
The ruleset for Star Wars: Unlimited is excellent. It is derivative, but building on successful mechanics from its predecessors seems like a sensible move to me. 'Theme' isn't my area of expertise, and is quite subjective. You may be right, but I'm not particularly interested in whether this feels 'Star Wars-ey' or not. FFG have certainly built up a negative reputation, but hopefully this game will be different. There's no guarantee, but FFG's decisions outside of the game have been overwhelmingly positive so far.
@@xyoucancallmeal From a engineering standpoint, the mechanics function well and balance. But most enthusiasts see CCG's more like cinema then they do a mechanical object. Marvel ironically has shown us just because a films plot and characters function well and the film even looks great; this does not translate to a beloved end product. Art is always subjective and CCG's are the marriage of math and art (not just in the card art, in feel, theme, flavor, subtext, non written storytelling over time). The time you spend in a game is itself a story, back and forth, ups and downs, the come back. The matches you remember are always the dramatic ones. I digress and yes, I'm a filmmaker by trade but the art in a CCG is more than half the products appeal. Look wayyyyyy back at Star Wars CCG from 1995 and you will see flavor and tabletop storytelling in full flight. It's the ONLY reason it's still the most collected dead CCG. I barely made a point but might be a way to look at games you haven't delved into before. Loved your Snap vids and will continue to follow your channel if i play the games or not.
You raise some good points. The 'art' of a CCG is important, but it is subjective and I'm not particularly qualified to talk about what makes 'good art'. Instead I can focus on something which I think is an objectively strong ruleset. The matches I remember are the interesting tactical battles, not the thematic ones, but that obviously doesn't apply to everyone. Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you enjoy the channel.
This is absolutely a “tell us you haven’t tried the game without telling us you haven’t tried the game” comment.
Thanks for the video.
Where is the set 2 review now we are on set 3
Please make a chapter 2 decks list prediction video
love the deck, i run this at locals!
Could you please make another video about the cards themselves…the rarities , 204, promo, d23, cold foils, non-cold foils what even is that? I’m seeing all these about the cards and I’m completely new to it. Would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I learn so much from this game through your video's. Thanks again for making these.
Thanks for another in depth video on Lorcana deck building! I havent played much yet, and this is probably a stupid question, but what do all these things mean like Aggro, Control, Midrange, Mill, Ramp etc.?
Those are deck archetypes or general outlines of strategies that can exist in a card game. For example, an aggro deck is, unsurprisingly, aggressive in its gameplan and tries to win the game quickly and a control deck would, as the name suggests, control the game to try to win later on.
"Amethyst is the weakest of the colours", this aged well 🤣
Would love you to see you reviewing your review now we're seeing a meta in tournaments appear.
I failed to anticipate Amethyst/Ruby. So Amethyst is the second weakest colour now.
@xyoucancallmeal Amethyst is dominating the tournament scene atm. I played in a 45 person tournament at the weekend and every person in the top 8 aside from myself had Amethyst in their deck. The PPG event had 6 of the top 8 playing Amethyst. Obviously, we all have opinions, but it's easily the number one colour at the moment.
The paper tournament scene is currently full of new players. Because there isn't a significant prize pool, only local players can attend. People are mistakingly taking the results of these events to mean the decks played are strong, this is not the case. The players who have played using online clients such as TTS or Pixelborn have a much deeper understanding of the game in my opinion. Amethyst has one very strong deck paired with Ruby, and people are only just starting to play the counters to that online, never-mind in the paper scene. And while Amethyst can be paired with anything to have a serviceable deck, this is true of all colours. Amethyst/Steel, Amethyst/Amber, Amethyst/Emerald and especially Amethyst/Sapphire are all weaker than similar archetypes in other colours in my opinion. And, even if I'm right, this will not reflect in the 'meta' that we see for quite some time.
This tier list is a joke 😭 also these are some of the worst built decks iv seen so far
Gotta say these tiers line up closely with some extensive play testing my group has been doing. Nice work
Hey remember when during your set review you said with great confidence that all Amethyst cards are terrible? And now the best deck in the format is running amethyst? I find that very interesting lol
I don't remember saying anything of the sort. I believed many of the Amethyst cards were strong, but couldn't find a home for them. It's true that I didn't predict Amethyst/Ruby Control being as strong as it is. I don't think it is the strongest deck in the format, although it is up there, and I now believe Amethyst is the second weakest colour, rather than the weakest. Part of the reason the deck seems so strong is that people don't seem to want to play the counters, but that will come.
No mention of Ariel otk? Where are you playing the games to come to these conclusions? Amethyst/Sapphire just placed in the top 4 of a 1K which doesn't refute your claim but it shows it can compete beyond tier 5.
I play on Pixelborn (the fan-made online Lorcana client) primarily. The issue I have with Ariel OTK is that it gets run over by aggression and is too susceptible to single-target removal in the late game matchups. I saw that after recording this and it certainly got my attention, but after looking at the list I don't think it does anything that other colours wouldn't do better. The player who top 4'ed the event had never played before and threw together something off the top of their head without testing. As you alluded to, variance can do lots of crazy things.
this whole list confuses me
Anything in particular I can help with?
Respectively, id argue you didn't popularize any ideas for decks with limited pool but weird for you to try and take credit. Pompous even
"Popularise" definitely isn't the right word, the Emerald/Ruby Midrange isn't particularly popular and in the case of the Amber/Emerald Hyper Aggro, while I was the first to try that in the Pixelborn community, it's not necessarily rocket science to try an aggro deck with Just in Time. I listened back to that comment after recording and would've liked to have edited it out, but didn't decide to do so, so 🤷♂️ I would point out though that I am, as far as I can tell, the first person to play those sort of lists in the online Lorcana space and created them without input from others and don't think pointing out my role in their creation is necessarily a bad thing.
Everyone please ignore this. These are very poorly built decks and do not reflect the actual meta.
They reflect what I believe the strongest decks to be, not necessarily what is popular, which I stated in the video.
I play amber/amethyst aggro and i find it confusing that you're playing mickey, ariel, rapunzel, maximus, moana, part of your world since they're just too slow, the while point of the deck is to get as much lore as possible in the beginning, get 6 lore turn 2, and then if simba isnt taken care of 7-9 lore turn 3 threatening leathel next turn and if the game drags on then playing stitch to draw and play 5+ characters in a turn to keep threatening lethal
I definitely don't think my Amber/Amethyst deck is definitive. I haven't put much time into it because I don't think it's conceptually very powerful. The route I took with the list was a version of Amber/Steel Aggro which trades AWNW for Amethyst card draw. I have played a decent amount of the Hyper Aggro version you're referring to, and I've found it to be substantially weaker than Amber/Emerald Hyper Aggro.
The hardest match-ups are anything with steel and obviously ruby but other than that it's too fast for most decks to stop since I will never challenge which forces my opponents to keep challenging me preventing them from questing which I've been told puts lots of pressure on them because now they're trying to take care of my board
@@unboundjackalI’m waiting to see Chapter 2 if they add more 1 drop 2 lore. Amethyst/Amber should be played to play as few inks to get as much more as possible. It will get better I believe, it’s already great.
It would insanely funny if, despite all conceievable odds, Amethyst/Sapphire becomes meta in a weeks time lmao I'll be preparing my hate comment for then ❤🙏
It already has
@osrsroland8464 I don't think I've ever seen an Amethyst/Sapphire deck function to be honest, I'm open to being wrong though, what deck do you think works with those two inks?
@@blerpsnurp Sapphire has ramp and Amethyst has Jetsam/Flotsam. You ramp into those two cards which gives you an army of Evasive Rushers that you can do whatever you want with. Then you have Belle to keep board presence strong. Generally speaking the Jetsam/Flotsam package is highly underrated because they are a 4-cost and 5-cost respectively and you have to draw both, well Sapphire gets around the cost requirement and Amethyst already has strong card draw / card ditching (with Cauldron and/or Yzma). Any new game, aggro is going to be king. This was true of the first 2-3 months of HearthStone as well. But eventually decks that can fight for board control while also keeping pace against Control will (generally) come out on top.
It literally just placed 2nd at a 1k tournament This guys channel is total bogus and to say you haven’t seen any amber sapphire either and is tier 4 is crazy.
The list you're referring to was brought by someone who had never played a game of Lorcana. It wasn't a highly competitive event. The fact that people are using that event as evidence of the power level of a deck is ridiculous.
Hey AI, amazing review I watched it with 2 friends and learned a lot about the game, but my OCD cannot handle that you didn't star 2 cards, which are: One Jump Ahead (you said it was pretty good, so I guess maybe 3 stars?) and Simba - Future King (you said its okay in certain situations, so I guess a 2 star?). I hope you will revisit the set after it has been released and maybe do another one of these video's, they are really helpful for new players as well. Keep it up, I subscribed. Cheers!
That's very nice of you to say, thank you. I think 2 and 3 stars, respectively, were my ratings at the time. I absolutely will revisit the set, hopefully soon, as my thoughts have evolved on many of the cards.
The decklists link in the description does not link to your deck lists, it links to MY decklists
Thanks for pointing that out, I'll be sure to fix that.
I feel like this isn’t going to age well. Card game was just released and Amethyst is one of the best for card draw which is desperately needed in this game… way too many “1” star cards.
After extensive playtesting, I have definitely changed my views on many of the cards. I was too harsh on Amethyst, but it's still only very powerful when paired with Ruby. All other combinations seem weaker than the alternatives currently.
Good stuff, new subscriber!
Where do i play online?
Using a fan-made client called Pixelborn.
I really tried to make it through the video but the sniffing was too much. Pause the recording and blow your nose dude. Between that and the discounting entire colours as 1s because you personally can't make them work has me dipping out early. Nice production and presentation style though.
Thanks for the feedback :)
I get most of your analysis. Coming from other games and playing on the more competitive side I get what you mean. I just feel like it's a bit too early for certain of your conclusions, but the video is super nicely built and it's nice to have your input on the first set cardpool.
Thanks for your kind words. It was very early to make those predictions and my views have already shifted on many cards. I created it with the intention of giving people a jumping off point for competitive play.
@@xyoucancallmeal will you do another video revisiting it all? Otherwise any cards in particular? From my box and the app i notice that ohana stitch is back to 2 lore and not 1
Literally the worst takes ive seen. Each colour has like 2 cards that you say arent really bad. Idk how you build a deck when you say every card is bad and is 1 star lol
Bear in mind that the review is a prediction video of what I expected to be top-tier decks in the future; it's very speculative. As expected, my opinions on several cards have evolved as I've played more games. This review is specifically for the best decks, not just playable ones. All cards games end up with a small number of top-tier cards that make it into competitive decks.
Can you recommend some deck lists?
I'll get a meta snapshot out ASAP which will have updated deck lists.
When are you uploading a new lorcana video?
I'm in the middle of a house move, but I'll try to get a meta snapshot out ASAP.
@@xyoucancallmeal thank you!
Is there a reason why we don’t play mother knows best in the deck?
Because it's uninkable, and we have no card draw, we can't support using a card from hand on it and still get to 6 ink.
Great video. Heading into a sealed tournament this week (6 packs, 40 cards, no deckbuilding limits). What are the commons and uncommons you would auto-include in that format?
I haven't worked on draft or sealed very much, but Pongo, Emerald Tinker Bell and Friends on the Other Side seem strong.
This TCG seems TOO narrow.. and basically Magic (Lore being Life). It's going to NEED more sets to be fun, and who knows if it will live that long. Probably not.
I find thoroughly enjoyable already. The First Chapter is a fantastically designed set in my opinion.
Disney!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
