Life of an Architect

Studying Architecture and practicing Architecture are two very different things. I'd like to help Architecture students bridge the gap between school and the real world.
3d Printing 5 Easy Christmas Ornaments
What better way to decorate the tree at work than with some cool 3d printed Christmas ornaments.
I'm using the Makerbot Replicator 2 Desktop 3d Printer. This is an old model from Makerbot but it's the only thing available in my office.
I downloaded the files for these ornaments at thingiverse.com

Project Update: Design Changes to the Meeting Room Ceiling
Просмотров 752 года назад
Last week I showed you the 4 steps I went through to design the ceiling in the Meeting Room for this project. Well, it's only been a week, but the design has changed a lot. Everything from the ceiling material choice, light fixtures, soffit locations, and soffit walls has changed. 00:00 Short week at work because of Thanksgiving 00:45 The ceiling material has changed 01:46 Why we chose wood for...
4 Steps to Design a Meeting Room Ceiling
Просмотров 2873 года назад
When designing a ceiling, there are a few different steps that Architects go through. We need to decide on the overall shape and volume, or better yet, the height of the ceiling. We decide on the light fixtures, whether or not there will be any soffits, and if we need any acoustic treatments. 00:00 Project introduction 01:33 Step 1: Ceiling shape 02:44 Step 2: Lighting 03:48 Step 3: Perimeter s...
How Architects Find Max Occupancy For a Building
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.3 года назад
Have you ever seen those maximum occupancy signs in a room somewhere and wondered, why is it that number? This room couldn't fit 100 people, could it? Well, believe it or not, Architects need to calculate that number to design a room in case of a fire. Today, I’m gonna show you how we figure out the occupant load in buildings by using a real project as an example. 00:00 Intro 00:53 Last week's ...
Why Do We Ventilate Roofs? An Example From A Real Architecture Project.
Просмотров 8103 года назад
Why do Architects need to think about roof ventilation? Because Structural Engineers would hate if their structure failed because of the weather. Today, we're talking about where roof ventilation is provided in buildings and why Architects need to know about it. I'll be using a real project I'm working on as an example. 00:00 Intro 00:48 I'm taking a break from the school projects 01:20 This bu...

very cool video. Thank you
2:04 3d modeling IS that easy
My only question - why would you round UP the max occupancy ? Wouldn't it make more sense to round DOWN the max occupancy to be conservative?
You have to round up to plan for a worst case scenario. The purpose of determining max occupancy is to plan for the maximum amount of people that need to exit the building or space in the event of a fire. If you plan for more, the building is theoretically safer by code. Hope this makes sense!
How do you scale down a model of a building? Suppose that you have a Revit model. How do you scale it down? Export to .dwg > make it a block and scale it down?
did you figure that out?
@@nikolarataj No, because I don't have a 3d printer. I was hoping that the author of this video would reply to my question, but they have not.
I try doing this for floor layouts for buildings but I haven’t figured how to scale it without making the walls so thin they just fall over/breakoff.
You're calculating Gross area incorrectly, Review the definition of "Floor Area, Gross" in chapter 2
a building would have been better to see, thank you for the video, is the Makerbot the 3d printer you recommend?
Do you have any tips or recommendations on taking an already created architecture model and easily make it a solid? For example, I have a revit file of a tower we built but its hollow with each floor plan and room on each level. It wont print very well unless i use a ton of supports for each floors deck. I simply just want the exterior of the building and the entire inside solid. The purpose here is to print mini replicas of the tower for the project team and the owners. I've come to the conclusion that i just need to redraw the entire thing, floor by floor in sketch up (or rhino), but i was hoping you had some experience with this and could shed light onto it for me. Thanks!
I'm trying to do the same thing right now! Did you figure out a good method or did you end up having to remodel it?
@@savannahmcdougal1172 How did you solve that in the end?
Very well explained. Thanks
Very informative, thank you!
Thanks for watching!
I like #1. It tells me that that is the front door. It looks basic but compared to others? I think thats the best on
Great choice! #1 is my favorite too
??Ỗ?Ø?M ?
I don’t get it !
😂 The stairs were made to go up to the roof but the client decided not to do the rooftop patio right now. In the future they will cut it open to get up there.
👍👍👍
I love this!!!! I love the swirl one!
I'll make you one for next Christmas 🎄

Hi Tyler - My son is thinking about going to architecture school. Where did you get your degree from?

Which ornament is your favorite here?
Do you like this new design or the old one better?
There's actually a good reason why these stairs stop at the ceiling. Can you guess why?
Way to go, Mr. Tyler 👍
