There are plenty of fundamental arguments against free will, one being material determinism. That being, looking at the world through a secular lense, the universe has an unbroken chain of events that affect every event thereafter. There's also necessitatianism, which sustains that there is no "alternate" timeline for something to have happened, because then some other factor (itself caused by a precedent factor and so on so forth) must have had to change. Because it didn’t, then this reality (or choice) exists only by necessity of all antecedent factors that contribute to it. The primary argument against free will is the existence of factors outside of our control (which one cannot argue do not fundamentally exist. I cannot choose to blow up the sun merely because I will it to. There are limitations to my agency and as such I do not have totality of free will). There are also secondary arguments, such as the stated above. And these are primarily secular arguments. Theologically, the version of this is predestination. Some entity (God), has willingly by design or by knowledge, determined the fate of the universe and in scope, one's very actions to the very principle of the Design. One can imagine if things were truly "free", then one would have the totality of choice. That being, every conceivable choice factored from any origin would be completed in order to satisfy "free will", since one has to have the ability to actually choose. If I made a choice, I cannot go back on it in this universe, ergo I must have made the opposite choice in another in order for theistic arguments of free will to make sense. Yet this does not fully satisfy the free will argument, since ultimately I cannot choose for myself which universe or which "choice" I have decided, only the branch from which I exist. Therefore, even WITH a multi-universal approach one does not have free will to begin with. The free will argument fails.
