Trevor Duncan (1924-2005) Valse Mignonette
One of many Trevor Duncan’s delightful miniatures is the exquisite “Valse Mignonette” composed in 1959. The composition cleverly employs an engaging musical dialogue between piccolo and flute.

Old Halifax in Pictures Part 7 (Buses)
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.2 года назад
Another look around Halifax from the past, only this time we concentrate on local buses that used to run in this area. I have deliberately omitted any locations so that the viewers can try and identify where they were taken from. There are also one or two rare buses that were not often seen on local routes. My thanks must go to Andrew Stoppford & Vic Nutton who took most of these splendid photo...
Wayne Hill -Left Bank Two

Left Bank Two was used as the background music when showing childrens drawings in the “Gallery” during the BBC television programme Vision On which was presented by Tony Hart. The composition by Wayne Hill was originally stock music in the De Wolfe Library performed by a Netherland session group under the name of the Noveltones, and dates from 1963.

Jack Coles (1914-1991) Sunshine Express

Sunshine Express is a re-issue of a tune I uploaded 4 years ago. Throughout the 20th century, Jack Coles composed and arranged light orchestral music for radio, television, film, and stage productions. He evolved a distinctly modern rhythmic style and composed both contemporary light music and popular standards of the time. His arrangements incorporated more and more jazz as time went on, which...

Back in the day, I would take a short cut across fields to get to my place of work. These were the playground of my childhood; they contained what was called a newt pond, because it contained newts and frogs. There were allotments to one side of the fields and a former railway embankment almost encircled them. As a child, I and friends had played in these fields and even on parked railway carriages and between wagons, too, before the tracks were finally pulled up after the Beeching cuts of the early1960s made the lines redundant. We would also play in an abandoned signal box, most of the upper floor of which was at some point removed: we children had to sidle our way around the edge of remaining flooring some seven or eight feet above ground level in order to play there, our parents would have had fits, if they had known. There was also an air raid shelter across the track from the signal box, it was thought that the ghosts of German soldiers hid there waiting for us to enter unwarily. There were two fields, a large and a small, and magically, to a child, the smaller field was accessed by traversing the railway embankment. This smaller field was rather like a meadow. Trees formed a barrier between it and the Trent and Mersey canal. It felt like entering a special place cut off from the normal world . There was plenty of wildlife to spot, dragon flies, rabbits, and said frogs and newts and sticklebacks to catch - and put back : nothing too exotic( this was the English countryside ), but it was the field's discrete isolation that made it almost mystical. In the summer, weeping willows would dip their drooping branches into the canal, swans and other aquatic fowl would be seen there. This sounds a little idyllic, it was: there just isn't the time to do these memories justice nor the skill to resurrect the feeling of the experiences. But things change, long ago the embankment was levelled, the newt pond filled and a housing development built on the fields complete with shops and school. I no longer go that way, having changed jobs many times since those days and am recently retired. My imagination can just about recreate the memories I have of those lost places but what concerns me now is the plan by our government to build one million five hundred thousand new homes, some on green belt land. May we never be in a position as a nation where we desperately need to grow our own food because of some disaster or other, there just won't be the farmland. And all those beautiful places that help to make our country special will be gone forever. But let's not get too maudlin, what I wanted to say at the beginning of this ramble was how much this music conjures up those times and images of our countryside. Listen as well to Butterworth's Banks of the Green Willow and, of course, Vaughan William's The Lark Ascending. They may be soothing but may also stir a feeling of resentment over the way our governments have knowingly encouraged mass immigration and now feign concern that we need more housing for "our" people to live in. Enjoy what's left of England's green and pleasant landscape before it's gone.

Postwar peace and joy. It looks like the late 1960s, notice the miniskirts and VW buses. There's no denying the music, which was the theme of BBC's "Forsyte Saga" (1967), a magnificent series which (for Americans) was the precursor of "Masterpiece Theatre."
