Dry-Joining Teapots

Dry-joining porcelain is a process unique to Jingdezhen. While many potters in the west join spouts and handles during the leather-hard stage, dry-joining has less problems with cracking & warping and does not require long periods of supervised drying. Simple slip & water is used for the initial stage, while a special mix of porcelain is used to fill in and cover up the seams.

Videos are shot in high-resolution 4K Ultra-HD resolution which gives a clear view of the technique. 72hands.org/
Use Target & Solve to Replace Basalt with Common Materials
Просмотров 4883 года назад
Sometimes we come across recipes that contain materials we don't have in our studio. But this isn't usually a problem, because we can use material substitution. In this tutorial, I'll show you how Glazy's Target & Solve feature can be used to automatically substitute materials in a recipe.

      Both terms are frequently used, I think in the US biaxial just became more common. Then again, here's a US potter using "quadraxial": ruclips.net/video/zantVEjfLmY/видео.html

      Hi Dana, I'm not sure where you are located. Your pottery supplier should sell sieves. I use the Talisman brand which is expensive but lasts a long time: www.axner.com/talisman-test-sieve.aspx The plastic containers I bought on Amazon, they fit the sieve perfectly: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HG8YTB0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

    Amazing feature! Surely worth paying for. In the end you say cone 10 might be too high. Though I did a workshop on glazes, temperature still confuses me a bit. Doesn't the position on stull give a good indication to wether it fires well as a cone 10 glaze?

    • @derekau3036
      @derekau3036 3 года назад

      Hi Clarence, one of the problems with the Stull chart is that it doesn't indicate glaze maturation temperature. Generally, the higher in alumina and silica, the higher the temperature needed to melt the glaze. However, the types of fluxes, inclusion of boron, and influence of eutectics also play a role. It's a complicated topic. But with experience, you can look at the chemistry and location on the Stull chart and guess the approximate temperature. Some people use "limit formulas" which you can display within the Glazy calculator, but these are not very accurate. I often do comparisons with glazes for which I know the maturation temperature. I'm working on a solution to this issue. But it requires a lot of testing and won't be release for a while....

    You say that "analysis match", but actually they don't (from 4:00).

    • @derekau3036
      @derekau3036 3 года назад

      Yes, they are slightly different, mostly because Glazy uses combined K2O & Na2O (i.e. "KNaO") to calculate the substitutions. You could get a closer match by including a Soda Feldspar instead of a Custer Feldspar, and maybe even Talc or Dolomite if you wanted the RO fluxes to match exactly.
