The 'stereo direction finder' knob is completely new to me, and I've seen various AT6's. Presumably it's a balance control built directly into the turntable.

The control lines are attached to the elevator, not the rudder.

Fairly modern PAW, the inlet used to be vertical and cast as part of the crankcase. Nice model.

Fond memories of working on these as an apprentice in the early 70's. We used the blowers off these for our dag bikes and cars. Superb engines.😮

It would be cool if you added a tweeter with built-in black metallic or plastic grill on each speaker box above the rectangular space opening seen when you applied the cloth speaker grill (seen starting from 9:14). Applying a tweeter on the center or on the corner, opposite side of the speakers brand name logo. Of course you had to drill a hole with a crown drill bit cutter the size of the tweeters. It will slightly improve the highs as those speakers are intended for being 'full range', despite them having a separate mini cone on the center coil. I by the way have an obsession with these type of stereos since i was a kid, especially when they have a Gerrard or BSR changer on them. I've seen these early '80's compact 3-in-one stereos with the turntable embedded in the system chassis but they are not changers, they're the standard short spindle ones, simpler like the Crosley's and are not BSR's. In this case this Sony has a BSR changer and it reminded me of those wooden floor stereo consoles and this model was to intentially prevent the transparent dust cover having double the height to save space as these changers have a tall spindle.

Hey! it's Mr Rose!. I see you still have a thing for the commers. You still got any 6.3's? . In recent years I was working in a resto shop where one of the Jobs was a 1914 Vulcan car. Vulcan the car and truck makers were very successful and made a fortune selling trucks to the military during WW1 .Another company bought them out and that was Tillings Stevens, the TS in TS3. Opposed piston engines were a common thing, the Americans have Fairbanks Morse diesels in naval applications and the poms also had the Napier Deltic,an overly complicated device but which had the most amazing sound under load. The German Luftwaffe even had opposed diesel air craft engines in some of their bombers.

Thanks for showing the inner workings of this machine. It's the exact same model I have - bought in 1970, together with the original Toshiba demonstration tape, from a Melbourne city retailer. I haven't operated the machine in at least 20 years (it's stored under the stairs) and until now I've never seen the insides of it. So, thanks for showing. Before I stopped using it, it developed a very 'scratchy' volume control and a laboriously slow fast-forward, but otherwise was ok.

The idling noise does not do it justice, hearing this engine at full noise is something to behold, also watching them de-coking under load The Alfred Hitchcock movie “FRENZY” has a scene with a Commer knocker truck. Hi, did you connect the sonotone cartridge directly to the turntable? Or did you use the impedance matching circuits provided bu thw sonotone brand in 1960. Thank you.

My dad ran a body shop from the mid 60's to the mid 70's. He had a contract with Wall's Frozen Foods to do accident and corrosion repairs on their fleet of Walkthroughs. I remember playing in them as a kid, Dad was happy with that because he knew where I was and what I was getting up to! Consequently I've always had a soft spot for these big daft lumps. Such a shame there are so few left.

Just re-visiting again. I think I prefer these Sony R2Rs to the AKAIs of this time, just my opinion. I've seen several over the months for sale here in the UK, but of course I am tempted, but I've enough electronic stuff! ;o)

i remember fitting a new starter to mine in the late 60`s / early 70`s. Tried to start it, nothing. Checked the fuel lines and they had air in them. That`s weird, but I bled the system and tried again with the same result. I tried it 3 more times with the same result! Then I happened to look down the next time and the fan was going round the wrong way1 They had sent us a left handed starter.

And you scored a good BSR turntable, which are ease to work on.

It runs on 5x D size batteries !
