You can take either and you don’t need to take both

they do based on merit and talent. You can be diverse with exceptional talent. You all have to have great scores. You can be a student from kenya who invented electricity, powered an entire village, solve a health crisis, yet the best student in the country, with perfect SAT scores, violinist, and speak 7 languages fluently. That is diverse and talented, rather than being a random white suburban kid with 4.0 gpa and perfect SAT scores and nothing else --everyone who applies to SAT (most of the students have near perfect SAT and GPA, it's the bare minimum and you won't stand out). More people who can cut it get rejected because there are very few seats. How do you stand out???

@CelestialPrince0920 Race and sex should NOT be a factor in college admittance and job hiring. It should be an ameritocracy. We should strive for equality and not equity. How so many people can argue it is ok for someone who is more qualified to be rejected in favor of someone less qualified, but more "DiVeRsE" is beyond me. We should not be accepting and rejecting people based on race and sex period. If we do, then it is by definition sexist, racist, and unfair end of story.

@ you are making assumptions with the word diverse. If a college has 8 seats, with very qualified applicants of all races, which they do get, it would make sense to admit 4 men and 4 women rather than 8 men. Or 2 very qualified black, asian, hispanic, and white students each to make a balanced and diverse class of well-qualified candidates. The right has incorrectly hijacked the term DEI to mean hire unqualified candidates to meet a quota. That is not what is happening in majority of the cases in universities. They are admitting well-qualified candidates from every socioeconomic class, race, geography, and background. And that might mean rejecting more white students since white students are the majority population-wise. We cannot admit a class of 100% white students while excluding everyone else. Same as admitting a 100% Asian students and excluding everyone else. I know many black students with perfect SAT scores and perfect GPA, whose parents are also wealthy and can provide them with all the resources to be an exceptional Ivy League applicant. Majority of silicon valley billionaires are NOT White. Many African first gen kids, especially Nigerians consistently get very high SAT and GPA scores and matriculate into Ivy League schools. In Britain where there is no affirmative action, majority of the Blacks that enter Oxford and Cambridge are Nigerian or Ghanian first/second gen students.

@@CelestialPrince0920 Looks like you're making more assumptions than me. You don't have to be a genius to imagine that "diversity" quotas will result in less qualified people being unfairly chosen because you will necessarily have to pull from a smaller pool of people. Maybe it's less of the case for MIT because it is one of the best schools on earth, so they have a massive ocean to pull from. But it is certainly a fact that less qualified people are admitted virtually everywhere that "DEI" is implemented. Also, I would not be so quick to assume that every MIT student who was admitted due to being of a specific race or sex is as qualified as everyone else. Racism is not ok, and we should not categorize people based on it. We should judge people by the content of their character and not the color of their skin.

@ Well, MIT does not admit by race and has done away with affirmative action. There are more Asians in MIT than whites, same with CalTech, Berkeley and UCLA. Rich white parents can't buy a spot for their white kids in CalTech because they don't do legacy. Don't worry, you will be the one screaming for more DEI program when most college campuses will be occupied by white women and non-white students--ALL BY MERIT since white boys are not performing that well in high school anymore.

try giving olympiads

You should definitely try boosting your grades. If you've got 3 years I am assuming you are in the 9th grade? You really need to get those grades up, as for advice regarding appearing for olympiads, I personally do not understand how you'd perform well in olympiads if your school GPA is low. So yeah, definitely work on those grades, try to hit the 90%+ at least, even better would be 95%. Do ECs, look at profiles of students who've gotten in, see what people with similar interests as you have done to get in. ECs are very important, along with good essays of course. For writing good essays I think, you need be a creative writer but also, good at analyzing stuff.
