    Well done ! This easy-sounding (at least by Grainger standards) piece is so much harder than it sounds, demanding very precise voicing and a large left hand (both are Grainger trademarks).

    I love your performance, Edward! This Grainger piece doesn't get played much by pianists, and I don't know why. For me "The Merry King" is a choice bit of Grainger's music. Thank you very much for sharing this enjoyable video! I really hope that you will do some more Grainger!

    I personally find the style of the pieces to be quite mature. They also seem to be harmonically complex at times, particularly No. 2, and Delius appears to be exploring the sonorities on the piano in a more sophisticated manner than in his earlier piano compositions, all of which suggests to me that they may be roughly contemporary with the Three Preludes. They certainly come across as being very inspired and thoughtful. Beautifully played and interpreted! David J. Eccott

  • @colinmatthews6591

    These are rather remarkable - they must be among the last pieces Delius was able to write down himself. How did they come to be discovered?

    • @danielgrimley7574
      @danielgrimley7574 4 года назад

      They were bought at auction last December after being in private hands: interesting set of sources. I hope to publish a short note on them in the Delius Society Journal alongside a wonderful little essay by Paul Guinery.

    • @LordoftheFleet
      @LordoftheFleet 4 года назад

      According to an article by Paul Guinery in The Delius Society Journal No. 167 (Spring 2020) the Six Piano Pieces were part of a set of manuscripts auctioned at Sotherby's on 3rd December 2019. Paul Guinery writes, “The piano material consists of sketches or rough versions in Delius's hand, along with fair copies in what is almost certainly Jelka's hand; we know that around this time (1923) she acted as an amanuensis for her husband.” Paul goes on to say that “It is also highly questionable whether the pieces were all original material composed around 1923 or whether they range back over a wider period.” David J. Eccott
