Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo flies from New Mexico for first time
On May 22, 2021, Virgin Galactic (www.virgingalactic.com) flew the SpaceShipTwo "VSS Unity" rocketplane to suborbital space for the first time since they moved operations from Mojave, California to Spaceport America in New Mexico. For this test, there were just two pilots aboard plus several NASA sponsored research experiments.
Unity was carried to about 15 km (50k ft) by the WhiteKnightTwo VMS Eve aircraft and then dropped. The hybrid engine soon fired and the vehicle reached Mach 3 vertically and achieved an apogee of 89.2 km (55.45 miles). It then reentered the atmosphere and glided to a landing at the spaceport.
This video was provide to the press by VG the day of the flight.

Rosetta and Philae at Comet 67P/C-G with SpaceTraveller
And look at spacex now. Launching the biggest and most powerful launch vehicle ever. Truly incredible.
Yep, really amazing progress. Without SpaceX, it likely would have been decades before reusability was implemented for orbital vehicles. I followed the development of RLVs closely since the late 1990s and found that mainstream aerospace was almost uniformly locked into the belief that the Shuttle had proven reusability would not bring lower costs and higher flight rates. Thankfully, Elon didn't believe that.
Wait, they forgot the SMART reusability!
The reusable second stage would have been something.
Fake
Amazing
pipe dream. never gonna happen
😂😂😂😂
Perfect music for this. Keep the dream alive!
And seven years later...... Everyone was amazed by the feat when elon demonstrated his reusable rocket
🖤🤍
Look where we are now boys. Imagine where we will be in another seven years
10 years later, watching this and thinking about how the next 10 years will look like after all those Starship preparations 😎
It's certainly been an amazing decade for SpaceX. The Starship activities at Boca Chica would have seemed like a fantasy in 2011. If they stay on track, then the next 10 years will clearly mean another huge leap forward for humanity in space.
1:48 That's the only thing they didn't do, because of BFR Starship.
10 reflights on a booster soon. remember someone linking this vid a decade ago on slashdot after the cheese wheel orbitted. been watching ever since..
This video is from fairly early on. Note the v1.0 engine layout and the difference between the landing legs shown here, and the ones that are actually flying. Otherwise the booster landing looks about right- except for how clean it is at the end!
Leon Musk..? Also great re-upload ._.
Wow, after all these years I never noticed that nor did any other readers. He once corrected me on my blog when I misspelled his name that way.
Also, at the time they would initially release a video file of a Grasshopper test. So I was not re-uploading from their RUclips channel.
please who knows the name of the song

LMAO landing rockets vertically. It'll never happen.
Came back here after watching a spacex launch. Oh my how things have changed! Also their plan to reuse the seccond stage
They discarded the idea of second stage reusability pretty early on but the idea of propulsive landing for Dragon was still alive even last year. And then Dragon blew up because of valves leaking and they finally gave it up completely. It never would have looked like the video though. A long, slow burn from 10,000 feet to ground (where would all the fuel be stored?). Instead it would have been a reentry burn and then a harrowing plummet towards tierra firma with a sudden burn at the end. Hair raising.
Actually, propulsive landing was abandoned in 2017 (spaceflightnow.com/2017/07/19/propulsive-landings-nixed-from-spacexs-dragon-spaceship/). Elon said it would take too long to certify powered landing systems to NASA's satisfaction. The explosion of the Dragon during Super Draco testing would have made that doubly difficult for sure. Also, by 2017 Elon and SpaceX were well along into the design of the Starship/Super Heavy transport, which will be fully reusable via powered landings. So no need to spend a lot of time and effort on pushing reusabilty and capsule powered landings for the F9/Dragon systems when something far superior was in development.
This video has held up remarkably well ten years later. Only thing they're missing is recovering the second stage and propulsively landing Dragon. And now with Starship they won't need to do that.
Yep, generally SpaceX has either achieved a goal or replaced it with something more ambitious. The complaints about not meeting schedules are just noise. If there had been a poll of the mainstream aerospace community in 2011 on how soon large boosters would routinely do vertical landings, I expect the majority would have said not for decades or never. The Starships are extremely ambitious but the company certainly has provided solid evidence for optimism that we will see them flying and landing in the next few years.
:)
Congrats everyone at SpaceX!!! In case I missed it, what happens to the part docked on to ISS with the solar array deployed?
The "Dragon Trunk" is discarded and burns up in the atmosphere.
Dec 31 2019. Twitter link brought me here. Really didn't know this idea was from 2011.. 8 years ago. SpaceX is awesome
Look at that cute little 2012 Falcon 9!
