iRacing Tour Modifieds at Martinsville - Modifying the Wall
Просмотров 913 года назад
Wanting a break from running under caution in the 87s, I thought I would run under caution in the Tour Mod instead! Race was actually not as bad as I feared, however I need to get a read of how wide these things actually are...

We aren’t ignoring it. Fact is the V8’s were the real 1000 & the 2L were never real competition or taken seriously. Also, Amaroo and Lakeside were fantastic race tracks.

Well this brought back memories. A little trivia for you mate.…In 1973/74 my Dad bought that block to do a little hobby farming, 10 steers. It was the year I was turning 16 and Dad would let me loose along the track that was still a tar road and capable of decent speeds, particularly that bend. Basically learnt to drive on that track. But as you say, I had to stop at the fence line. I did however once cut the barbed wire to do the complete circuit but the more interesting section was on our side so I never bothered again (not to mention the neighbour, or Dad may not have been too impressed if they caught me). The other property had set up a rodeo corral I reckon in the late ‘70s and had regular rodeos but clearly that’s gone now. Ahh memories legally hooning on that track…

Biggest issue with ST was that it was so reliant on factory teams, and once BMW pulled out after 1997 (nothing to do with the DQ) the local scene was always going to struggle. If it wasn't for Ch7 there wouldn't have been the BTCC cars coming over, they pretty much paid for them. If it wasnt for Brock appearing in the 1997 race I'd think the interest would have been at an all time low. The races themselves? Interesting rather than exciting thanks to the day long battles, particularly in 1998 between the Volvo (the shootout lap often gets a mention amongst the best ever considering the specs of the car) and the Nissan. Probably needed a few more international teams to come over like the 12 Hour has now to make it viavle long term, but the category worldwide was also dying.

2 litre super tourers were so much better than the racing taxi formula Australian bogans favoured. The WTCC & BTCC races during that era, had big budgets, big audiences, and exciting racing with many different winners, constant lead changes and more aggressive driving regulations. In comparison, the V8’s with their processional races with few overtaking opportunities & nanny-state driving standards, created the biggest yawn-fest in the history of Australian Motor Racing.

Was there for both of them in 1997 and 1998, as well as pretty much all rounds of both atcc and super tourers in those years, crowd numbers in super tourers made it obvious to see the category was on borrowed time through 97 and 98.

Now here is the reality. Buggerall people turned up for the 2 litres but the v8 crowd was a record. The fans voted with their feet and ultimately it was the v8 formula that not only continued on but made it the most competitive touring car category in the world.

The Super Touring formula was my introduction to big-time touring car racing via the North American Touring Car Championship (NATCC). The Dodge Stratuses of PacWest Racing were a sight to behold, and their battles with the NART (North American Racing Team) Honda Accords were epic. Too bad that series didn’t last very long, but it was still my gateway to a wider world that led me to eventually discover the BTCC via the ToCA Championship Racing games and the ATCC via Speedvision (now FS1). I got my first taste of Bathurst around the same time via a ToCA-inspired racer that was called Jarrett and Labonte Stock Car Racing here in the States, and while I wasn’t blown away by it immediately, over time, that track has grown on me. It’s the track I most frequently drive in Assetto Corsa Competizione, and it’s a blast to drive in a McLaren 720S GT3.

After a season of F3 I moved to 3.5 and it feels much more like an F1 car. Driving it well is more challenging but also more satisfying, plus you get like 8 DRS a race to use. As my goal is to get the F1 experience one day, it is my choice. Currently after finishing a race, 40min later the next race starts, which is totally fine for me. The only thing that is an issue is there are no splits, so usually 1-3 guys tend do lap me and I need to get out of the way. This is fine as this is something I need to learn, but can make races a bit less eventful, as there are only few guys with my pace to really compete on eye-level. HOWEVER the big plus is that there are no crash festivals at turn 1, and people drive much more respectful. As this is the biggest killjoy for me in F3, F3.5 is a way better experience. And I think many people have fled to F3.5 for this reason :)

I used to play this sim endlessly. Unfortunately I couldn't get it to run on W10 so I haven't played it for several years now. I've seen others, including the official F1 games, which they "update" every year without actually changing anything, but they're just not as good. Graphically things have moved on, but the physics has never been bettered... on modern sims the cars don't turn like a real car, they pivot around a central point which is just stupid. And the car setup element of GP4 is still light years ahead of anything else. The way I see it, Crammond GP4 is a proper sim, while the others are just arcade games.

With the same feature as GP4 just better Graphics and modern Cars etc. In modern games u hit a wall and yeah ur front spoiler maybe get a little damage and u keep go driving. But on GP4 if u were of the road u better beg that u dont hit the wall...because if u were unlucky than rip ur car. Also the multiplayer was insane awesome: I played with my brother and after a few minutes that i drove the AI will take control of my car and after a few seconds the Car from my Brother will get the control from the AI. So yeah. no stupid Split screen or whatever. Just awesome multiplayer. Best Multiplayer(without internet connection) i ever saw. Sorry for my bad english

THANK YOU! I built that version of Port Wakefield track for rFactor racing sim back in 2014- I sure wish I could have seen this clip back then- the detail would have been sooo helpful! BTW- that portion of the track that is fenced off, it was plowed by the owner of the paddock a few years back (judging by Google Earth images. That & reports of him chasing off anyone visiting the site gives some indication as to what current owner of that paddock thinks of the history of the place! ;) I later found out the motorcycle pits were on the outside of Tyresole's corner (turn4), although I believe the pits may have been in at least two different locations over it's short life. My 'version' is what I envisioned it COULD have been in late 60's/early 70's if it hadn't been abandoned in '61. Unfortunately, I can no longer access old YT account to answer comments, but please follow the links for a peak at my own video uploads and if you have rFactor then you can download track in 3rd which also contains some 'reference material I was able to find online at the time..
