Remembering Helen Reddy born on October 25, 1941. She was an Australian-American singer, actress, television host, and activist. During the 1970s, Reddy enjoyed international success, especially in the United States, where she placed 15 singles on the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. Six made the top 10 and three reached number one, including her signature hit "I Am Woman". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_Reddy

A crazy girl, shunned by almost everyone, is almost r*ped but she uses some kind of superpower to essentially imprison her would-be attacker in her radio forever...and it's a goofy cartoon.

I don't think the video does the song justice. It doesn't show the whole of what her mind and heart are like. She's messed up and sad and in a really dark and truly sinister place. The song does that better. The video is a parody. Don't care for it, to be honest, but the song is and will always be a winner, in my honest opinion.

LOVE this song, love Helen Reddy (and Alan O'Day) and animator John Wilson. This video always creeped me out a bit, because why was she like this weird finger-wagging hillbilly thing? so great and weird. And anyone else notice the giant bouncing penis crossing the screen right to left from about 00:16 to about 00:25 ?

When I first heard this song as a kid, I always thought Angie was just a lonely girl living in a fantasy world she created for herself...and when the neighbor boy came over and he disappeared into the radio, he became the secret lover they mentioned at the end of the song

I’ve always loved this song but now I find it really creepy because I knew someone named Angie that became schizophrenic in high school and she had to stop going to school and instead spent her days just watching tv and listening to the radio, completely living in her own world. Listening to the lyrics really gives me shivers down my spine!

There was a lot of handwringing about lost youth & the evil effects of rock music back in the day. She played it for the boy & it made him lose his mind too. I think hes just off at festivals on drugs. At least thats my take on it.

Does anyone else feel like the ending of this song is actually kinda...nice? The neighbor boy is described as voyeur with "evil on his mind" who comes around and sweet-talks his way in when he knows her parents aren't home. I interpret it as him being a predator, and Angie and her beloved radio working together to get rid of him before he can hurt her.

    • @marlonwhite8127

In late 1977 (or early 1978) the company I worked for held a convention at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Helen Reddy did a show at this event. One of my two biggest recollections from that night was this video and the extent to which it creeped me out. The other memory is of the elephant that was in the room --- Ms. Reddy did not include "I Am Woman" in her performance. Her audience was about 95% men and I have often wondered if she was asked to leave that song out of her act or if she just thought to herself, "Why bother?" RIP Ms. Reddy

I think Angie was Autistic, had social anxiety disorder or was psychotic/schizophrenic- she had no friends, she had to be removed from school because she couldn’t function, and she was obsessed with music from the radio. This caused her to go into a fantasy world and in the process actually murdered any boy who came by her because she “wanted companionship.”
