Long Words On Song Words
Добавлен 5 окт 2018
Somewhat irregular posting of prog and metal album reviews and other similarly themed videos. I only upload when I feel like it, no regular schedule, and my videos are relatively low-effort. But all the same I have a passion for prog-rock and metal, and wish to share it all with you!
Three Albums I Should Love, But Don't... And Three Albums I Shouldn't Love, But Do
Exactly what it says in the title! Sometimes, you absolutely love a style or a band but just don't connect with one of their popular records, sometimes you find yourself absolutely loving an album the rest of the world tells you to hate. I explore three of each in this video!

Did you check out the new Blood incantation album absolute elsewhere? I think it is a prog metal materpiece. I can't stop listening to it.
(replying from my personal/other account) I did! It's so fantastic! I need to give it a second spin as soon as I can!
Love the concept, even if it has been done elsewhere (this is the first time I am seeing a list like this).
Well, I recommend checking out Notes Reviews, Rhyme Signatures, The Similitude of Prog and Nathan On Shuffle, and not just because they're good friends of mine, but because their content is really good, and they do this kind of stuff much better than I do!
This was such a relaxing video to watch while the kids were at school. I had no idea you even listened to Linkin Park at all! I'm glad you're back and I hope to see more videos like this from you 🥰
Been a fan of LP for as long as I've known they existed. They're just not a band I really gush about in public. Not really because I don't want people to know, but because the rest of the taste in music I have feels more "interesting". I plan on some similar kinds of lists in the future, but also probably reviews and maybe some opinion-oriented material (I had considered actually doing a video about my thoughts on the new Linkin Park singer and all the controversy around that).
That was a really nice review. Did you scripted it? Reminded the time i buyed music megazines. Remember those. The album is amazing. What a debut.

Great to see Moon Safari on here! I also like your number one even though I'm no prog metal fan.
good for punk noise
For a debut album, this is really impressive stuff! Just found Nospun a little while ago, and 'Opus' really caught my interest from the first listen! A 9 out of 10 album for me... 👌
Great list! Thanks for taking the time to break them all down. Love your #1 spot. I love their video for Earwyrm and am definitely looking forward to their next endeavor... Jon Guerra - "Ordinary Ways" 25. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - "Weathervanes"
Very good list.
I consider crown lands to be the Greta van fleet of prog. In other words complete garbage. Modern prog is in a sad state when all we get is retro copyists. 2023 was horrible year for progressive rock that was progressive. I now refer to it as Regressive Rock.
Cool list. I haven't heard most of these bands , but will give them a try. Cool to see another person enjoys Periphery too.
Cool video! I really enjoyed it. I’ve heard probably 5 of these, but the other 5 I am excited to seek out now. Thanks! I subbed to your channel too. Good stuff! Maybe you might like mine as well. 🤘🤘🎶🎶

Сколько стоит и где купить?
Sorry, I don't know Russian or Cyrillic, I had to run this through Google Translate, but I assume your question is about how much it costs and where it can be purchased. I don't know what the situation is with ordering items from sites like Amazon or Walmart's online shop in Russia right now with all the different sanctions from the West, I wish I could give a more positive answer. But the price before shipping and customs and taxes tends to be around $35 Canadian dollars, I don't know what that translates to in your local currency but it should give you some idea!
I guess I don't see as much o the comments as you, but I know the type. I guess it comes with the territory with RUclips and Social Media, but I take it with a grain of salt. Younger people can and should be able to find Prog and Metal from the past, on their own terms as you say. I'll admit though, growing up liking Classic Rock, I was of the fear that I would not find music of my generation to like. And all the old bands would be gone, dead, etc. It really took for me discovering Dream Theater in 1995, that it changed. But I've since learned to try and discover music from as many genres and generations as possible, whether it be Prog or Pop. Obscure, or mainstream. If it's good, why does the era matter?..and in a lot of ways, why does WHEN you discover it matter?..life is short, but there's also a shit ton of music to check out and only so many years we have left, lol.
I agree with a lot of your sentiments here! Reaction videos fill a void for me. Growing up, literally nobody else I knew liked DT. So I am missing that joy of sharing my favorite music with friends. I never thought I would get another chance to watch someone fall in love with bands like DT, but alas - I have finally gotten to see many different people experience this awesome music
That's just it! We all want to feel loved and appreciated, and sharing the things we love and feel passionate about is one of the things we do to connect with others. And even if we're not personally the ones sharing with people doing reaction videos, even if we're not in the room with them, we're sharing an experience. It's always so beautiful to watch people learn about these things we love, and it makes us feel like others "get" us, like they now understand why we love the things we love. Even if reaction videos aren't your personal cup of tea, you gotta appreciate what they represent - open-mindedness, willingness to try new things, and spreading the love of the things we're passionate about. Discovering great music should never be something we discourage!
I agree with all your choices, but one. I'd move A Dramatic Turn Of Events up to GOOD. But it's your list...not mine.
Honestly, if I give it another chance I might see fit to move it up a place or two in my ranking. To be fair, when I first heard the album, I absolutely HATED it, so where it is now... I definitely warmed up to it.
Heck yeah! I am ALWAYS here for the DT content! I feel the same way as you. I'll take my least favorite DT album over 95% of anything else. I just can't help it - they changed my taste in music and almost nothing has compared
DT is really what kicked off a lot of my love of music. Before this I had some favourites and I was already learning to play music thanks to the likes of Rush, Boston, Metallica... but Dream Theater was the first band I discovered that truly felt like it was *MINE*, not just a band I listened to out of my dad's tape collection or a band everyone else had heard on the radio a million times. DT was the first time I'd heard music that felt like the musicians were actually speaking directly to me... and while I may have other bands that rival them like Pain of Salvation or Tesseract or Haken or Cynic or King Crimson... DT is the one band that no matter what mood I'm in or what kind of music I'm looking for, I can put on an album of theirs (even The Astonishing or Octavarium or the self-titled) and feel like I've slipped on something comfortable and I'm *home*.
@@longwordsonsongwords Yes, I feel that! Like you I was mostly into Metallica as well, along with Sepultura and bands like Nirvana. In high school I downloaded “Metropolis” (just the song) from Limewire or Napster and enjoyed it. So on a whim, I decided to pick up Scenes from Best Buy when it came out. I had no idea that I had bought an album that nothing else would ever surpass. Also, we share the same top 3 (just in slightly different order)
I kind of love it. You iddn't use the video, just talked about it. I hope you find success. You seem to have good taste based on this one video I saw.
When will the album come out on CD?
No set date yet, but we’re currently working on it along with vinyl
Hell yeah Arrival!! My man!!
Intriguiging choices.
The fact that the end screen I selected doesn't show and the music just plays as my static face sits there is unintentionally hilarious. Emphasis on unintentional.
Waaaait, are you the Travis I think you are? I came across this album a month or two ago and loved it, then randomly RUclips suggested this video to me today.
Just to elaborate... from the Remedy Lane forum, right?
@@Cloudburzt Yep. That's me!

Guitarist from Nospūn here. Thank you so much for your review!
I hope there will be a vinyl release of this awesome effort.
@@davedefrancesco2685 There will be :)
Praise from THE MAN himself! Love your riffs and solos all over this record. I probably got tons of nerdy guitar questions like what tunings you're using and stuff like that. :P
@@longwordsonsongwords Ask away!
@@jamesnelson2475 mostly just curious about what kind of tunings you're using. Sounds like 8-string guitars at some point but you're playing a 7 in the Earwyrm video. Maybe I'm just hearing lower notes than are actually happening. That said, I guess it means your guitar tone is pretty crushing! You plugging into an actual hardware amp or using an amp sim? I've been trying to up my tone game and recently picked up the Archetype Plini plugin from Neural DSP, and I can honestly say it's pretty damn great for prog tones, but I'm looking for something that sounds as unbelievably tight as your sound on "Opus"!
Nospun's Opus is absolutely fantastic. So happy to have been turned to this by Ian from Rhyme Signatures! 🤘
Your record was fantastic too! Gotta dig into it again, hopefully find the time to give it a review too!
Super, you don't suffer from hippomonstrosesquippedaliophobia. I hope they release a physical copy. If Nospun is NOT a candidate for album of the year...Than 2023 may be the best year for prog in over a decade. Let's hope.
Good to see a new review from you dude, and super glad you've been digging this one so much!
I agree with most of your points, however for nostalgia and having Derek, I do appreciate Once in a Livetime a bit more. Unsure if I'd put it higher than a C (maybe a B-?).
Great Video, I really enjoyed your thoughts on each individual album, and I also learned a few things as well. 👍
The reviews great and all but all cassettes hiss . 😂
Tape hiss is something of a myth. If you record to a proper type II tape (metal tape, as opposed to a normal type I tape) and play back on a device with Dolby noise reduction, you can get almost CD-like results. This portable player has an issue beyond that of other Walkmans I've owned. I have a Sony that plays a lot of brand new tapes and well-taken-care-of tapes with minimal hiss. A lot of this device's hiss comes from its internals, like the amplifier circuitry. At that point it wouldn't matter whether the audio signal was coming from a record, a tape, a CD, or a digital file, if the amplifier adds noise, then whatever benefit or issue comes from the format becomes a moot point. And that's the one biggest issue with this device for tape playback - the amp adds a LOT of unnecessary noise. But it's not the tapes themselves as they play much more silently in other tape playback machines I own.
Check this video for more info on how cassette hiss is something of a myth: ruclips.net/video/jVoSQP2yUYA/видео.html&pp=ygURdGVjaG1vYW4gY2Fzc2V0dGU%3D
Anyway, a bigger issue with a lot of cheap analog playback devices is motor speed. I'd care less about a little background noise as long as the tape or vinyl I'm rocking plays at the right speed and this Walkman has a few issues there, but they're easily corrected.
@@longwordsonsongwords this is true, cheap cassette players do suck
@@longwordsonsongwords yea, but chrome and metal tapes came after ferric tape, and notice how you said noise reduction, yea all cassettes hiss, even if it’s hiss is less heard, and your correct people should buy better ones
Well, you nailed it!
Great review!
One thing I forgot to mention about "Eyes of Ebony" is that the lyrical theme continues the animal kingdom metaphors by relating Richard's grief to the story of the final male white rhino. I had to edit out a whole bit about "Lovebite" too because I said some things about the song's instrumentation that were just WRONG (look, I'm sick right now, even after taking some notes on each song, I still misread things). But suffice it to say, I considered that track a major highlight too! I definitely promise the next video (whenever that happens) will be better! I'll be more "present", that's for sure. But I didn't want to miss my chance to get a review in as close to release as possible, like I did with Riverside...
Great pick as #1 :D
Knew you'd approve!
fun list! I love the Toehider album as well. Was #3 on mine. I had the Marillion album on my list, but I'm a massive fan and they are my favorite band, so that adds something. Never heard of Hallas, but from your description, I will have to check them out. I'm also with you on The Mars Volta album. I'm not all that into it. The 1st single I enjoyed, but when I heard the record, I just felt little interest to go back to it. Fun idea of the Hall of Fame. I know that feeling! Cornerstone is a decent record. Not my favorite Styx, but still a record I enjoy at times.
I mean, objectively, it's not the best Styx record, but it did make a hell of an impact! I also just noticed I didn't mention the new Devin Townsend album at all! That should've at least made my honorable mentions!
It works only with batteries or you can use an AC adapter?
Both
@@thechallenger456678 thanks
i don't even know why they manufacture stuff like those earbuds that's just useless e waste as soon as it rolls off the line.
Same. I mean, the player itself... at least useful... but it should just come with the idea that you've got better headphones itself. If not the only thing these earbuds are good for is... checking if anything you plug them into has signal or not? I guess that could be useful.
Muy bien explicado, me ayudo mucho para decidir si comprarlo, muchas gracias
Great to see a review for this album; I'm surprised there aren't more. I've listened to this top to bottom many, many times since Spotify threw them at me. I kinda hate to admit it, but their algorithm has been pretty good at guessing what I'll like.
