Misha and Karo fell in love many years ago and had the dream to live on a farm ever since. Karo from Germany, Misha from Russia chose Portugal to be their home.
We bought a farm in November 2023 and moved with our two little kids to the rural north of Portugal.
We have Vincent our cat and added five chickens to the family recently.

building a fence to protect our garden from intruders
This week Misha is building a fence to protect our vegetable garden from the chickens. Their scratching and eating the leafs of all plants makes it super hard to grow any food that we can consume, because the plants are struggling a lot with this "love" the chickens give them.
Having a chicken run was not really an option. We really enjoy having them around, following us, coming to the kitchen for snacks. But yeah, the garden needs protection. So here we go.

Life and work on the farm is as much rewarding as it is hard at times. Some projects are on hold, we are sick every other week. Taking care of a job, kids and household is already enough for one life. We are still foraging mushrooms every weekend with the kids. We are embracing the first days of autumn here on the quinta. The oven is running and we use it for drying our peppers while heating (and drying) the house. Rain season is starting in Portugal. Water is leaking into our kitchen. Misha is trying to isolate the house a bit better without major construction. Our neighbor helps with our vineyard to hopefully safe the plants and have a better yield (not that hard because there was none) next year. What else? Chickens are lovely, life is wonderful.

It is still the last days of summer yet on the farm we need to think ahead and start preparing for the colder season. The wood needs to be cut, collected and stacked. The windows urgently need an update as the varnish is peeling off.
We removed the old toxic beams from our community room - to create a cozy room with a fire place

Our community / party / fire place room had wood from old rails that was likely treated with creosote. The smell was hard to handle even when we frequently aired the room. So Misha made the big effort to change the entire sitting area and the result is stunning. #buyingafarm #portuguesehomestead #homesteading #offgridportugal #diy #handicraft #woodworking

This week was exhausting for us all. Wild fires were burning near our farm. One afternoon we even had packed our belongings already to be ready to leave our property in case the flames came closer.
