    6 minutes in an on the Less Then value adjustment, I am still only seeing 1 line. Clearly its a user error on my end, because I have watched other videos, and still only get one line. Anybody else have had this issue? I am using 4.2 Blender. I opened the file you have, and it might be because some stuff is different, the repeat stuff is complexly different in the download file, when i open it in 4.2, vs the video.

    Great video, thanks. Still early in my Blendering/geometry noding and the info in this video felt like a massive step up for me with my own grid to terrain modifier efforts. In the video you use a 0.1 multiplier to make a suitable composite Sort Weight and I wonder : A) If there is the same precision limit on Sort Weight as a regular value meaning an equivalent SQL style example "ORDER BY X ASC, Y DESC, Z ASC, etc" with millions of vertices could exceed that precision to sort correctly? And B) is there an alternative sort means in geometry nodes that doesn't need prior knowledge of the data size to avoid needing to pick a suitable value such as x0.1 for ~500 vertices for packing sort channels into a Sort Weight?

    Sorry for criticism but it is not correct. The fibre doesn't work like this. There's a light exactly at the very end of the fiber and that gives the light. It is not a quite long light strip at the end. I tried to get that effect, nut even if I set up the colorramp to 0.999 the light is not a dot, but a stripe. Sorry.

    Since the Noise Texture has been reworked it now has the Normalize option. If you would disable that, the output no longer ranges from 0 to 1 with an average of 0.5, but from -(detail+1) to detail+1 with an average of 0. So you don't need all that math to center it (only scaling maybe if you want to increase or decrease the offset effect).

    Is there a reason for using colour ramp to drive the orb size, rather than a float curve? I guess it demonstrates another approach, but I always find that float curves are more intuitive.

    • @TiFiDesign
      @TiFiDesign 2 месяца назад

      No particular reason other than habit or preference. I tried adjusting it with the float curve and still prefer the color ramp. The color ramp let's you see the effect as you drag the stops around whereas the float curve you have to release the mouse button to see the change. I suppose it depends on the situation.

    Heads up, some viewers wondered why Cycles doesn't work to render the lines. Oddly, the orbs had color in Cycles, but the lines didn't. While investigating, I promoted the Orbs from Instances to Mesh using Realize Instances, changed the Orb shader to read the 'color' attribute from Geometry instead of Instancer, and it BROKE in Cycles. Quick web search reveals there is an open bug in Blender that renders colors black in Cycles when the attribute name 'color' is used on vertices. I've updated the Gumroad file, but if you want to fix your own project, the fix is to change everywhere you have 'color' as an attribute name to something else, even 'colour'. Cycles will work after (though you'll probably want to add some Glare in the compositor). Cheers.

  • @TiFiDesign
    @TiFiDesign 2 месяца назад

    So it's not a bug, it's just a missing feature! Blender's Trim Curve documentation does have a warning that cyclic splines are not currently supported. Which tells me that at some point when they are supported, we won't need the work around in the video to disable the Trim Curve at the end of the animation duration. 🎉 Also, I later discovered that you CAN use the Sample Curve node to get unique positions for all points. I misinterpreted the documentation. The fact that it inputs and outputs fields should have been my clue. If you connect the Index field to the Sample Curve's Curve Index input, the Position output field will give you the factor's position for every spline in the Curve geometry input. No need for the Repeat Zone. You can use Domain Size to get the count of splines, use a Points node with that count, then plug the Sample Curve's Position field output into the Points node to set their positions.

    Thanks. Very well explained, easy to follow. Just one thing: you chose leaving the extruded chars without a back face. That's okay, but could you show how to deal with the indexes of both geometries? I'm puzzled...

    • @TiFiDesign
      @TiFiDesign 2 месяца назад

      Hi, thanks for the feedback! I'm not sure what you mean by both geometries. Are you trying to fill the backfaces? If so, what approach did you take? Edit: This sounded like a fun challenge so I experimented with it. I was able to fill the backfaces and turn each letter into a manifold mesh. But to do that I had to Realize Instances so I could Merge by Distance. I was using Join Geometry to join the flat letters with the extruded letters. That converts the Instances to a Mesh, so then you lose the instance index. So that required capturing an attribute to store the original index. When the letters become Meshes, each point has that instance index stored on it. So later in the node graph, instead of using the Index input node to determine which letters should be deleted, I used a Named Attribute node to retrieve the original instance index. Last gotcha after that was, each POINT was given a random variation, so all the points of one letter mesh didn't appear all at once. To solve that I took the same instance_index attribute and plugged it into the Random Value node's ID input to assign the same random value to each point related to the original instance index. And the animation works the same as it did with the backfaces missing. That definitely adds another layer of complexity to the project though. Anyway. I *hope* that answers your original question. Let me know.

    • @TiFiDesign
      @TiFiDesign 2 месяца назад

      Hmm if you mean how to turn the plexus into an organized shape, that I’m not sure how to do really easily. If you had a cube to begin with you could use a set position node, take a Position input and plug it into a mix vector node, then plug a random value into the other vector input. The slider then would shift between the cube and the random points. That could be a good place to start.

    Repeat Zones are designed to not be multithreaded, so you're geonode setup will quickly get slow when more orbits are added. On the Blender Science Discord Server we just discussed faster approaches, which can be e.g. achieved with the "Instance on Points" approach. Here's the blender file: discord.com/channels/940526858800336936/1104836157516284034/1262548263890845759 The Blender team has plans to have a 'foreach zone' in the future wich can run in parallel but it isn't there yet.

      It's pretty neat! Looks like it goes back as far as 4.0.

    Such a great tutorial thank you for sharing this. Commenting about your question at the end: I get overwhelmed learning geometry nodes sometimes because I learn so many new nodes all at the same time and even though I can reach the result I don't think I'm really grasping the understanding about what I'm doing. These detailed in depth walk throughs are really helpful!

      I'm glad this was helpful. And thanks for sharing your experience. I know the feeling-I've definitely followed tutorials in the past and felt overwhelmed. Many show the how but not the why. I'll keep your comment in mind as I make more tutorials for everyone.
