LGW3 Orchids & Exotics

Hello! My name is George and welcome to my RUclips Channel ( LGW3 Orchids & Exotics )! My love and passion for plant life has inspired me to create this channel.
Orchids, in particular, have been one of the most fascinating family of plants that I have enjoyed studying and learned to cultivate! I am by no means a horticultural expert, so yes - I have learned a lot by joining my local Orchid Society group, self study, and good old fashioned 'Trial and Error'. My intent is to show videos that can offer both educational information and present creative ideas on how to grow orchids and other exotic plants! My hope is we can all learn from each other via comments on the videos I post. My philosophy is to always exercise responsible growing. While there are many plants that look amazing in nature, it is just simple not possible to provide for all species like nature can. The plants that are impossible to keep in captivity should be left for Mother Nature! Enjoy everyone and happy growing!

Great video, super helpful! Than you!
Great! Thank you so much for watching! 👀
Love the phals!
Thank you!
Wow!

Oh my god , you are growing Sobralia ? ! I had 5 plants , all had died ,only 1 survived . Your plant should be blooming for you.
Indeed! Sobralias are beautiful orchids (though very short-lived flowers). I do hope it blooms at some point, as the plant and roots are super healthy! 🤞
What wood did you use for the frame & what plastic did you use?
I used regular 4x4s and 2x4s for the floating frame (not anchored to the concrete). Any wood on the floor is pressure-treated. For the plastic, I used greenhouse plastic (10 mil thickness) for durability. FYI, any wood facing the concrete wall was also painted with an anti-mold resistant paint so no wood rot could potentially occur. So far so good! Thanks for watching!
wow George, everything is looking great.......such diversity in your collection,......love the chiller set up......the Peristeria is new to me, very unique......what a great update.
Thanks Rick! The Peristeria Elata is also called the Dove Orchid. It gets a really long inflorescence with some really cool looking white flowers.
Hey George...looked like a flower spike on your Stanhopea ecuagenera. Huge Peristeria elata and that Phalaenopsis pulchella... is amazing. never saw one that vigorous. I want one now lol. thanks for sharing
Thanks Terry. Yeah, Stanhopea flower spikes love growing down. Hopefully, it grows out okay and produces some nice flowers!
wow George ...olives??? damn man. i wish i could grow those. Do you get fruit? That's a HUGE cattleya behind the olive tree. Nice schilleriana. Very nice blooming on that Jackie Bright! Thanks for sharing
Thanks Terry. I think the birds got to some of the olives, as not too many are still on the tree. Lol
......Skyrocket has to be one of the best looking little guys on Utube!........what a face....Great update George.....I loved seeing the catasetums with new growths and no decimated bulbs.....never understood the not watering for months and sacrificing last years growth for the new growths...... Such a beautiful sitting area....your backyard orchard is growing very fast......Banana's and Pomegranate's in New Jersey......had no idea you could do that.......well done!
Haha, Thanks Rick! He's a YT star. Yes, the catasetums are doing will. The Catasetums do typically tend to go dormant in the fall (typically early October). I'm not sure if they could be kept alive all year, but the new leaves look great right now. Everything is growing well, except my grass (lol). Central NJ is an odd spot. Sometimes we get tones of rain and other times it stays north (grrrr). Lots of heat, just like down south and everywhere right now. I'm in zone 7a. The bananas and pomegrnates can technically overwinter, but they will fully die back and I will need to cover them with mulch and perhaps some frost cloth or something on really cold days. Fingers crossed and I will post thoughts and results next growing season. Happy growing and thank you for stopping by!
Hey there, do you still reccomend the mister in this video? Looking to get something smaller for myself
I do indeed! Mine has been running strong for well over a year. It runs a few times per day (everyday) - no issues. You can use any reservoir of your choice. I use RO water just to prevent spots and clogging of the nozzles with just 2 drops of Physan 20. The system works great!
.......your yard is beautiful......I love your sitting area,....and I love all your fruit trees.....unlike other backyard tours......you have a lot of knowledge on your trees and plants.....really enjoyed it........thank you for sharing.
Thank you! I hope to do more vids, but time between family and work life is a delicate balance. Only so much to go around.
.....wow.....the difference in the basement greehouse a year ago vs this video.....wow.....again Im really impressed with what your able to do in your climate.....would love to sit down and talk growing if we were closer......keep doing what you do.....George...I need to bring some attention to your channel.......wonderful work your doing!
That would be great Rick! I enjoy meeting new people in the hobby and on YT! Any promo would be great, lol. It's tough building up a channel. 💙
@@LGW3-Orchids-Exotics .......I understand.....would be happy to send growers your way......
......George....Im in awe of your set up.......the thought that you put into this is great, the automation.....and in New Jersey climate as well....your plants look healthy and are blooming beautifully.....such a great space, must be a wonderful place to sit and relax....you have inspired me.
Thanks Rick! Yes, it was a bit of work to setup, but this is my first house. You should have seen my apartment and all the lights the neighbors could see outside! I actually gave a couple of tours with all the plants I had! 😆 Yes, it is very relaxing and rewarding growing orchids and other plants! Thank you for checking out my channel!
@@LGW3-Orchids-Exotics ....George you have a great set up.....and you grow great orchids and other plants.....keep doing what your doing!
Bro you're doing all that for that type of plants that seems like a little Overkill ain't it
Ya think?!
You definitely have a green thumb when it comes to planting many of those things I tried to grow myself unsuccessfully and some successfully.
Where the weed at?
😂
I noticed you got some of your orchids from Andy’s Orchids. That’s awesome
Yes, Andy's Orchids has beautiful orchids! I think he will be at the SEPOS orchid show next weekend if you're in the Philadelphia area.
Love your videos, came upon them recently, so just catching up! Can you name which of the motionland misting systems you use in the video (the powerhouse)? Would you suggest it for mounted orchids, or do you think a drip system is a better choice? I don't have a tent or greenhouse.
Thank you for finding my channel! I'm glad you enjoy the videos. The Moistenland Mister I hang from the ceiling. It can be used with misters on a table to work like a drip line also. If your area can get misted (wet), it will work great. The reptile fogger I use in the Terrarium. This works great to keep the environment super humid without actually spraying water. This might be a good option for you if you don't grow in a greenhouse or some environment that can get wet. If you have excellent air movement with fans, then misting can be a good option, but water cannot sit in the crowns of the leaves or youbwill have rot issues. A Terrarium can be a fun project and a great way to go. Best of luck!
Nice job! Hope to see some germination.
Me too!
Wow amazing holy cow. Thats awesome.
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice little hood! I didn't know any so small as this, I hope the price is proportionally small! I use a glovebox like you did before, And I am very successful. It is made out of styrofoam and it has a clear glass top, for better viewing. I have one large glove, made of thick and resistant material for my left hand and a thinner one, with better touch sensitivity for my right hand (do the opposite if you are left-handed). I have to change this thinner glove periodically, it doesn't last long with all the bleach it ends up taking. But they are cheap and allow you a much, much better sense of touch and dexterity. Another recommendation: Try as hard as you can to do what we call "green sowing". That is sowing from a capsule that hasn't been cracked open yet, but has been through more than 70-80% of its maturation period. So you don't have to sterilize the seeds, which is harsh on them. You only sterilize the capsule's exterior, and the germination yield is a lot better this way. I have a full series of videos about that! Check them out!
Awesome! Thank you for the suggestion. I did try green sowing once, but it was a little tricky because the seeds were packed together. It makes sense that germination rates could be higher since you're not cleaning and possibly killing seeds with H2O2. I will check out your videos. Thanks for watching! 👀
Interesting stuff, I know you've done your homework on all the processes/procedures to do to the flasking procedures, but it seems so far from what would happen in nature lol
100%! When I think about how sterile the environment needs to be in a controlled environment, yet nature isn't necessarily sterile when it propagates in the wild - fascinating! It makes you appreciate just how everything needs to come together just right for life to continue! Symbiotic relationships.
How often do you water/fertilise ?
I typically water every day, alternating plants into 4 groups of watering sessions. So every 8 days everything will have been watered twice. I use a low fertilizer dose every time I water. During the winter I keep my TDS around 40-80 (starting from 0 with RO water). During spring/summer I will bump it up to 70-150 TDS.
your plants look great , you have a nice place with plenty of room for them through the winter!
Thank you! ❤️ No matter how much room there is, avid orchid/plant lovers will always find a way to fit one more. 😂 I can't wait for spring!
Thank you for sharing your basement green house. Looks relaxing, and peaceful.
Thank you for checking out the channel! Yes, it is very relaxing- Especially during the cold lifeless winter. It's nice to see green with flowers!
Very nice setup
Thank you very much!
very very nice!! So happy that I found this channel, I am not the only one. I also grow tropicals indoor, with all the challenges that you already know. I plan to build this type of "enclosure".
Thank you for the awesome comment! Yes, there can indeed be challenges, but it is very rewarding. Especially when it's cold outside and I can go down into my tropical space that's 70F and humid. I love the challenge of growing nice plants and trying to create hybrids.
So badass!!! I love it!
Well thank you very much for watching and the awesome complement! I truly enjoy this hobby.
Do u have a link or name for those white lights. I’m looking to try some new grow lights for indoor seedling room. Thank you
The center light I use is from Amazon. I would like to buy more, as they are adjustable brightness and work fantastic! Gardening is a hobby... and I love it... I grew 65 tomato plants in 2023... I'm going to plant 75 tomato plants in 2024... my neighbors love me and the big red tomatoes they get every week...
It is a great way to relax and connect with nature and the outdoors 100%!
Quero!
A lot of effort to have beautiful orchids but it's paying off. I also had an RO plant 6 years ago after I saw Ricks orchid channel and my plants started growing fabulously. As per his advice I started using calmag too because in RO water there is not enough elements especially calcium.
Yes, my water is city well water with only 90 PPM TDS, but taking it to 0 TDS and only adding knows back to it helped significantly! I am a believer in RO water 100%. CalMag works well. I have also started using powdered eggshell and liquid plant hormone in the mix and it works wonders for thicker and greener plants! Rick's channel was great. I knew he had some ailments, but not sure if he passed since. Great guy and super knowledgeable!
Beautiful set up. Just wondering why you didnt have white walls. That would make it brighter. And, can we keep plants all year round in there?
Totally valid question. My basement doesn't leak and it wasn't sealed when I moved in. There were tons of plants from my old place that I needed to get set up here. I didn't bother painting the wall, but yes white would have been great to bounce the light. I could still do it. I am able to grow plants all year long. My lowest temp without a heater is no lower than 59. The max temp is like 78 in summer.
thx for sharing.
That is amazing!
Hi there! Does the alcohol harm roots?
It's a 60:40% (RO water : 70% Rubbing alcohol) mix. I typically use it more on the leaves with paper towel to remove the pests. I may spray a fine layer on it and let it dry. If I use it on the roots, I only let it site for a minute or two, then I flush the pot. I haven't had any roots get damaged from short exposure.
My dream... You really did an amazing job. Very impressive! Thnx for sharing!
Thank you very much! It's a fun hobby, but it's also a great way to grow plants all year round!
Hell yeah man! Thanks for the video!
Thank you 🙏
I'm in a northern climate so trying to figure out how to insulate a basement greenhouse with concrete floors is a struggle. Love your setup!
I'm not sure how much farther north than New Jersey you may be, but you have options to insulate. You could use the 1" reflective foam board over a vapor barrier. You could also possibly heat with a heated floor mat and/or warm fountain. Every methodical heat source will help. Once it's sealed, drafts shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for stopping by my channel!
I just got this plant today, packed in moss. Please share what type of medium you have it growing in. Thx
Depending on where you live, if it's warm I would use a clay pot with a fine perlite, bark, and charcoal mix. Daily watering. It is more warmth tolerant than the cross parent Dendrobium victoriae-reginae.
Neat setup!
Thank you for watching! New content to come soon.
LOVE This! I’m inspired to make something similar!! ❤❤
You should definitely build a plant setup! Indoors or a greenhouse is a great way to enjoy the hobby.
Is this better then ink birds version or can it keep humidity in ranges 80 to 85 ?
I have no idea what 'ink bird' even is. RUclips is a huge universe. As for the humidity, if done correctly, you can keep it almost 100% if you wanted (though not recommended).
@LGW3-Orchids-Exotics thanksfor writing back man. Okay it's just another brand that does thr same but debating on this one cause you can actually replace the censor.
@andrewbarnett2761 Personally, I love the Digiten Controller. It has been working well with many custom control setpoints!
Hello! if anyone could give me advice on how to maintain the high humidity levels to grow the moss on the mounts, but avoiding mold problems?
I haven't seen (spanish moss) get moldy. Is this what you are referring to? A humidifier, misting setup, and a water fountain like I use should do the trick. My greenhouse humidity stays around 70% or more.
Good luck my friend, very admirable 😅 attempting to replicate their reproduction really gives me an appreciation for how special orchids are
Thank you! Yes, orchids have evolved into amazing flowers! Fascinating -
할 말이 없네요.👍
