My first guide dog changed my life GuideDogs

I had never owned a pet dog, let alone a guide dog, and having been on the list waiting for a suitable guide dog for nearly two years the wait was finally over, I was matched with a black labrador cross by the name of Zodiac. The experience so far has been overwhelming, and a huge adjustment as a person living with a visual impairment. I have never used a long white cane or any other mobility a...
Disability Confident - Seeing Ability, not Disability #DisabilityConfident
Просмотров 1204 года назад
The Benefits of Disability Confidence Employees with disabilities are still chronically under-represented in the UK workplace, and this clearly remains one of the key reasons for ongoing social discrimination, and economic inequality. Supported employment is key to overcoming these persistent prejudices. As with any minority group, the more visible we become in positions of strength and respons...

I'm 26 and in the process of acquiring my first guide dog. I'm registered blind with a condition called optic nerve atrophy and night blindness. I have 1% in the left & 10% in the right side. Also sensitive to light/sun. Also can't see from a far distance. I'm also registered deaf but have bone anchored hearing aids. I'm still in the beginning stages. I use my long cane but I don't like using it. I think it's just the area I live but I find that either no one knows what a long cane is or they don't care. I often am the one that has to move out the way or when I'm crossing the road, cars don't stop to let me cross or the other day I was nearly run over: I checked both ways and waited for the path to be clear, once I knew it was safe I started crossing when a silent red car sped & slowed right in front of me before driving on. Luckily no cars the other side but it was scary being in the middle of the road and nearly being hit. I also want to be more independent and go places outside of my comfort zone additionally, use other transport like buses, trains or planes on my own instead of relying on walking, taxis or asking for a lift from family /friends. Hugs. I want to go uni, travel etc. It would be great to go on my own : especially because my mum is moving overseas in the next year or so, hence I'd have to travel to visit or go on holiday lol. My worry is hospital appointments or stay, going overseas some places it might be too hot & being refused by taxis. Love this video. Xx
