How to scale up a magazine or book sewing pattern by hand, without a printer
The skirt pattern block used in the tutorial was created in the free course bit.ly/patternillustator I scaled it down to ¼ size for this tutorial.
If you’ve ever picked up a sewing magazine or book and fancied trying one of their free makes, but you’re stumped as to how to scale up the pattern provided (they don’t all provide the sewing patterns at the correct scale), here’s a very basic tutorial how you can do it without a printer at home.
You’ll need the following tools:
Pencil
Large paper (large enough to fit your new pattern)
Ruler
Calculator
Step 1
Take the original pattern and trace it onto the new paper
Step 2
Mark a spot on the pattern as the starting point. In this example I’ve used the b...

You seem to know a lot about digital software for drafting. I’ve never used any software to make my patterns other than my own. I’m thinking about launching the software to the market and was wondering if you’d give the video linked below a watch and let me know if you think a tool like mine would be useful, if it’s advanced enough to meet standards set by other software. ruclips.net/video/a9UbwhzKG3o/видео.htmlsi=1Fw5yitPW6rRU5hb
All I could find was how to manipulate already made patterns on illustrator. Thank you so much for this tutorial! It's so detailed and easy to follow!
Oh my god thank u so much, I’ve been looking up how to make my patterns digitally for a while now and haven’t found anything as detailed and helpful as your video 😭🙏🙏🙏
It would be useful to be able to transfer the pattern digitally and save it as a PDF for future revisions.
You sweet women thank you most of the time this information is $100 + dollars ! I’m so grateful
This is so flipping helpful! Thankyou!
Genius, thank you.
YOU ARE AN ANGEL WALKING THIS EARTH😂 thank you so much😊
Most helpful ive watched so far thanks for going slow and giving us a thorough demo ❤
thank you

THANK YOU SO MUCH for your very informative content. I just recently learned illustrator and ready to take my skills to the next level in digital pattern making. I’m very glad to have found your channel here! More power to you and your YT CHANNEL. Subscribed 😍👍🏻👏🫶
WOW thanks a ton!
Wow, thanks
Which astute graphics plug ins have you added here? Thank you!
Thank you for showing step-by-step instruction. It's very useful for me in understanding using Illustrator.
You are a hero! Thank you so much. Please do a video showing how to do the long winded and pretty way!
thank you so much, why you stop do it, please keep going, we learn a lot form you
hi, where you get the notepad? thank you
From this demo it seems that Illustrator software writers want you to work in a restricted Portrait section of your screen, whereas most screens are much wider than the height and most can't be rotated to vertical/portrait. My pattern making monitor is 20" wide x 11.3" height and most pattern cutters would draft their longest part of the panels across the width of the screen where they can see in much closer detail what you are doing. Is this a stupid oversight and thus limitation for what claims to be the leading industry drawing software ?
Thanks for this wonderful tutorial 😊🌸
Illustrator has Auto Save setting by default then why are you recommending us to use this plugin? 🤔🤔🤔
Thank for the video. Can you show us how to do the opposite? By printing A4 patterns onto A0?
Thanks a lot 🌸😊
Thank you so much for sharing your skills in RUclips! I hope you are well. Your presentation style is amazing, BTW. I followed along and created the dress block, yesterday, but being fairly new to doing a Full Bust Adjustment and this was my first block draft in Illustrator (I'm fairly familiar with the techniques you use), I'm wondering how to go about doing the FBA. MY block looks wonky, since I'm trying to fit for someone with narrow shoulders and ribcage, and a 3" difference between the front upper bust (I assume that is your underarm measurement) and the front full bust, as well as a fuller front abdomen. Dividing total circumference numbers would end up with a side seam all over the place, right? I looked, but haven't found a resource page for these kinds of adjustments. Thanks so much!
God Bless You!! I Lo e the way you explain things could you PLEASE make more videos! We need YOU on RUclips! Praying everything is well with you, please come back and make more videos you are a Great Asset! God Bless You! Thank You For Sharing your Knowledge and videos!
Thank you so much!
You just changed my life.
Thank you so much! This solved my printing problem
Hi, I have been going back & forth trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong but I can’t seem to find my error. After I click on the anchor point to the back of the neck and I go down 1.5 cm a clear box comes up and I am unable to do the width of the neck 7cmm. The same thing happens for the front block. Can you assist me please? It allows me to do the steps but the line (7cm) does not appear. It appears as if I can’t use the anchor point to the back of the neck after I go down 1.5 cm
Any version of Wildginger.com PatternMaster software comes with a built in pattern editor CAD tool that will allow you to create your own patterns in a similar way, but costs less than an annual subscription to Adobe Illustrator. Pattern Master Boutique creates patterns from your personal measurements, they have free trial downloads. Any die cutting software is basic CAD drawing software that can create sewing patterns
If you have a Silhouette Studio die cutting machine and the Silhouette Connect plugin you can draw the seam lines and details and cut out the seam allowance on A3 sized paper.
Wait for Black Friday for Adobe Cloud, got almost half price subscription last year. Astute Graphics price gets you all their plugins, a subscription gets you the latest updates, but you do not have to pay for a sub every year. Some of their plugins are now free, love the MirrorMe plugin.
bless you..could you please do a tutorial on grading the patterns
