Dvořák. Largo from New World Symphony. Stokowski. 12" Victrola Shellac Record. 1920 Recording.
Catalogue number 74361.
Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra.
Played at 78 rpm.
Recorded 21 May 1920.
This is a really good acoustic (pre-electric) recording.
Just imagine the players crowded around the recording horn, or horns.
Forgive my pronunciation of 'Dvořák'!
I'm also not sure about 'Victrola'.
The microphone is on a tall pole directly in front of the gramophone horn,
about 4 feet away.

This CD is clearly intended to sound LOUD. The volume is turned up to 11, there's not much dynamic range, and there's frequent clipping of the audio waveforms. Mr. Salieri, you hated God because he gave a coarse man named Mozart a tremendous gift, while he appointed a mediocrity to you. Alas, your gift of narrating so dramatically and effectively was also a gift...and yet you were unaware, and unappreciative. A shame. (yes, i do know this was just a movie). Let's all be thankful for our own gifts, and not compare with others.

    Sounds lovely! What phono stage/preamp are you using by chance? The fancier Audio-Technica cartridges seem to be fickle about this, though I find people's mileage varies.

    • @trottophone
      @trottophone 3 месяца назад

      Rega Fono pre-amp (original version). I have noticed that my Audio Technica cartridges (AT95E, AT-VM95C/E/ML, AT 440mla) all have a slightly rising treble response, compared to other cartridges I've tried. I don't know why that should be. I'm not imagining it, test records confirm it!

    • @OldMusicOnVinyl1
      @OldMusicOnVinyl1 3 месяца назад

      @@trottophone you are far from alone in finding that. From what I've read I think it has something to do with the inductance of the cartridge bodies, and reducing input capacitance on the phono stage can tame the treble somewhat. AT cartridges tend to prefer 100pf or below...the 95ML being a bit less sensitive than the 440MLa and its successor the VM540ML.

    Considering there was just 9,000 of these C5 made, as someone who actually used one in the mid 1980's on a charity ride for 25 miles ..... Thinking about it I'm one of the few who ever used one. LOL, awful thing, couldn't knock the skin off a rice pudding and felt really unstable with your hands below your legs on the 'bars' It has peddles inside the facia, but when faced with anything resembling a small hill the pedals were useless, so get out and push!

    • @trottophone
      @trottophone 3 месяца назад

      I bought one in the 1980s and I've still got it! As you say, the pedals are useless, especially for me, with my long legs. I haven't driven (ridden?) my C5 for years. One thing I especially remember is that it could be frighteningly fast downhill, probably because of low air resistance... and there's no brake on the left hand rear wheel!

    How brilliant was F Murray Abraham as Salieri in Amadeus? If i had to choose one performance, BY ANY ACTOR, as the finest in cinematic histiry, this would be it. Flashing back and forth in every scene from idolatry to bitter hatred. Questioning why an obscene, giggling little "creature" should be god's instrument on earth. That is a feeling common to most of us. We witness these supremely gifted individuals that never realize that to whom much is given, much is expected. That is at the core of this incredible film. As the elder Salieri, Abraham takes it to an unfathomable level. Poignant, funny and tragic. All at the same time. The irony is that Salieri was regarded as a great teacher in his time. His knowledge of music was vast. Some of his students included Beethoven and Mozart himself!! The closing scene in Amadeus may be the finest ever filmed. "I will speak for you father. I speak for all mediocrities in the world. I am their champion. I am their patron saint." UNREAL. Waving as he is wheeled away to everyone in the asylum. "Mediocrities everywhere i absolve you. I absolve you." The greatest lesson in this film is that we are all essentially flawed. And the greatest absolution is the absolution we owe to ourselves. A lesson Salieri omitted to himself.

    • @trottophone
      @trottophone 5 месяцев назад

      The run-off groove has been scratched into the shellac, after the record was pressed. I guess this was because the record-cutting machine couldn't cut a run-off groove. Letting the needle run onto the painted label looks like a bad idea, but the label has survived so far!

    • @rcmac206

      Many early records never had a run off groove and it was just a circle at the end. My guess would be the tone arm of the acoustic phonograph popped out and cut it's own groove.
