This video was made about the Broad Avenue Memorial Bridge in Albany, Georgia. The bridge was finished in 1920 and dedicated to all the men from Dougherty County Georgia that served in WWI. We have an online petition to save the old bridge. Anyone, no matter where you live, may sign. Please help us keep our historic bridge. www.change.org/petitions/save-albanys-historic-broad-avenue-memorial-br...
The last picture shown looks they could be from Georgia Mobile Home Park(Wal Mart on Cordele RD)
Actually it was a homemade trailer and the family left Albany in it to get work in Columbus.
Thank you! Great place to grow up decades ago…
Feeling Nostalgic! Merry Christmas! 🎄
Thanks for this gem!
You are welcome and thank you.
Awesome!
Thanks
Albany was once a great little city, thanks for the memories.
Wow what a wonderfully created video! Thanks so much. Pat & Dollie Patalivo. ( I graduated from AHS 6/6/1966.
You probably knew my ex SIL Pam Wallace (Rehberg). She was a Chix of 66. LOL
Thanks so much! Wonderful memories!!
Walter Flint's lights were so great to see every year after leaving FUMC. There is a sign on one of the generators doors at the Southwest Georgia Medical team's hospital in India where he and his sister donated the generator, that I almost cry when I see it.
It didn't look like that when I was on the Moultrie Police Department. LOL
Albany has been in a downward decline for the past 30 years. Its a shame. That city management is so incompetent.
Omg I was going through some of dad's stuff and found some old pictures of Albany in black and white
I would love to see them. Join our Facebook group and post. facebook.com/groups/vintagealbanygeorgia/
I remember them well....and Santa at Sears Roebuck....thanks
I think that may be the earliest picture I’ve ever seen of Radium Springs.....lots of good people inhabited Albany Ga, just a few decades ago....the lot is dwindling. The Dixiecrats would not be pleased with the fruits of their labor.....RIP James H Gray, sadly the town died with him.
What a crappy town this has become.....aaarrggghhh. Very nice video!
Nice video btw......
A prime example of a town that once had a heyday and after the demographics changed dramatically in the government, the town of Albany Georgia is now a shithole of a place.....lead the nation in murder in 98? If you ain’t a “person of color” you have no place in Albany Georgia, what a shame....
Hi Betty! My mom was Janie Eatman Williams. Do you happen to have any pictures of her childhood home or her parents? It was one of the areas torn down and unfortunately my mom passed away so I have no way of identifying it. 😞 Or her relatives- the Mayos & Hills.
The Eatman building on Pine? It was heavily damaged in the 1940 tornado. Where was her home? I know someone that MIGHT have some of them. Her grandfather had an office in that building. I will ask her.
I do have a photo of the lady that ran the Mayo House. I will find it. What were some of the names of the Hills?
What slave plantations did they have in albany?
There were a few, even one owned by a free black man. He owned slaves which sounds crazy
Oh you know that can’t be true.....how dare he 😳
@@kerrytodd3753 It happened. He bought his freedom and then bought four slaves for his farm.
That was wonderful! Thanks, Betty!
what ever happen to all those decoration like the big tree in midtown shopping center and the big candles and snowman I would love to have all that stuff
Sylvester bought all our old pretty downtown decorations. Midtown sort of fizzled. We have few decorations downtown now (none in the rest of Albany) and sadly many have burned out bulbs or no power going to them at all. "Leaders" here do not care, do not check anything and we pail in comparison to much smaller towns, in every way. Albany is not in any way like it used to be.
@@History321 yes were I live at now in alabama the little towns here do it up big but Abbeville they all seam to have old decorations from other town like Albany I miss the old stuff
Thank you for sharing this. The picture of the 6 men at 2:27 are my family. The one in the middle standing is my 3rd great grand dad Joel S Norman and his 5 brothers JB, Richard, Joseph, William, and Moses. Picture was taken in 1905 I think
My moms dad was a Joel David Norman , My grand mom was a Della Mae Clark

It's still a good place to live. People are kind and caring, no matter your age or race. We speak to everyone, friend or stranger, hold the door for one another, always there to help each other friend or stranger. This is a good place!
That statue that's in the middle of the street with what looks like a soldier has removed by chehaw Park in Albany. I would have never known that if my grandfather hadn't told me he can remember takeing pictures by it in the middle of the street!
Yes the local SCV moved it to its own park. That is the fourth and final location.
My mom worked at Silvers 5&10
Really much enjoy your videos on Albany ,some places I can recognize..
Thanks!
That was not Stephen Foster, it was Gershwin! LOL, had my songs mixed up!
Cool
Yesterday. Thank you Betty Rehberg. This is a moving and magnificent tribute.
I was here back from the future in 1956, now I'm here it's different in 2017
Back from the future? Uh OK...LOL
.
My family loved to drive around and look at all of the decorations and of course we had to go by Mr. Flint's house on 3rd. Ave. and see Santa in his Jaguar (I think). Went to the old Sears store downtown at Jackson & Ogelthorpe to see Santa and then a building was built in the parking lot of the Midtown Shopping Center for Santa and all of his visitors.
It's a shame that much of the unique architecture was torn down to make way for modern, bland buildings with no character.
Is there a place, public, that this history can be seen up Close?
We have a museum but they are rarely open and almost never display any local items. LOL
Where is the Civil War memorial Located?
By cheehaw park
Philema Road.
Excellent... Thanks for the memories
Nice...
Love your work Betty...
Betty- you did a great job! Thanks for the memories
Love. Thanks for your hard work!
Were there any efforts to preserve a piece of the bridge and place it in the museum?
Thronateeska has the plaques and benches. Some of the railings are or were in the Art Park.
Some railings were kept, and the old benches and original plaques but I no longer know where ANY of them are now.
I have a small section of rebar a friend saved for me.
WOW, DIDN'T KNOW IT HAD THAT KIND OF HISTORY!!!□■□■
My grandfather Walter Scott Gibson was the chief engineer for the construction of the Broad Avenue Bridge. He went on the become chief of the Dougherty County Police Department. Too bad they wouldn't save it!
The old bridge is almost gone now, a few more days/weeks and there will be nothing left.
Great job Betty!
04/03/2012 - Sad news. The city Commission refused to reconsider. The bridge will be demolished as they planned all along.
@terryejames My sentiments exactly! Tugs at the heartstrings fiercely!
What a beautiful video! A great tribute to a remarkable structure. --so, so sad it is about to be razed and tossed aside like a piece of trash.
Please excuse the typo in the video. I will correct it tomorrow lol.
