    Just finished GOTM, can’t wait to start on the next one. You have a stacked lineup for the rest of the year. Sun Eater is a fantastic series, based on your love of Dune and Traveller I think you will really enjoy it.

    Great review. Please take a look at David Gemmel. One of my favorites was his historical fantasy: The Lion of Macedon. Give that a look and if you don't like it I'll buy your paperback from you at retail.

    Fans of the book wonder deeply how Chani’s father became a woman.

      The film made many, many changes from the book - several of which, but certainly not all, were mentioned in the video.. What about this particular change made it stand out to you from all the others?

      @@VoyagesIntoImagination As said "Chani’s father became a woman." It's beyond weird. And oddly, every other version managed to cast a man in the role of a character that is a man in the book.

      So just offhand: In the film, Paul’s Mentat talents and training were dropped. In the film, Pieter goes to visit the Sardaukar on Salusa Secundus - which is supposed to be the Emperor’s most closely held secret. In the film, Alia wasn’t born after Jessica undergoes the Spice Agony. In the film, RM Gaius Helen Mohiam masterminds the Emperor’s plan to eliminate the Atreides. The film has no internal monologues. In the film, Paul and Chani’s infant son isn’t in the movie, much less killed. Stilgar is a True Believer in the film. Chani is not a True Believer in the film. Among dozens of other large and small changes. So I ask again: What about the *particular* change of gender-swapping Liet Kynes makes it more important than the rest of these, enough to warrant explicit complaint?

    • @joejackson4627
      @joejackson4627 5 дней назад

      @@VoyagesIntoImagination Paul's Mentat training was a lifetime worth. The shield practice was perhaps all the producer would pay for. I didn't like the Mohiam or DeVries divergences either.. Paul's first Leto gets nothing in any movie. Lack of time? Stilgar is accurately characterized. Chani is another change. Just how will Messiah still get her as concubine? Changing a character's sex is ridiculous. Imagine the simple conversation. Movie fan "Ain't Liet a sexy woman?" Book fan "Liet is Chani's father." Both "Huh?"

      You're not answering the question, which makes me suspect a bad-faith position. I am pretty sympathetic to sensitivity to changes from the source material - in this case a source with which I am quite familiar - even though I may or may not think a particular change harms the film on its own terms, or creates a tonal disconnect from the source material. I will ask again, one more time: what is it about this PARTICULAR change that bothers you where the others (as well as the many not listed) don't? How does this particular change damage the story in a way the others don't? I'm *not* saying that one can't make a reasonable case against this casting decision. But *you* aren't making one. I see this as rather far down on the list of changes I'd rather DV not have made.

    I always love to hear what people think about books like this. Out of curiosity, have you read Patrick Rothfuss's The Name of The Wind? It is my favorite books due to the way it is told and would love to hear your thoughts on it. One of the reasons I suggest it here relates to something you mentioned in this video, it seems as if Erikson placed each word deliberately. Rothfuss does the same thing. To give an example; at some point in the first book the main character references 7 words to make a woman love you. He doesn't elaborate on what these 7 words are but most sentences spoken to women in the book are 7 words. There are countless examples like that and that is one of the reasons Rothfuss is held in such high regard as a writer. If you haven't read it, I hard recomend it.

      It's been a while, but I have read it. I may get back to it someday if Rothfuss ever finishes it.

      Yeah it is hard to recommend the series when it very likely will remain unfinished. A shame, but it is what it is. Same reason I rarely recommend ASOIAF anymore.

    Wizard's First Rule holds a very special place on my list of "experienced books"... It actually holds 2 spots in my personal list: 1. It is the only book that I have ever started that I could not finish (yes it is THAT bad). 2. It is the only fiction book I have ever read that actively made me regret getting back into reading as an adult.

    I just don't want to ksit through shows I'm not fully enjoying. Once I get to that point I stop. I am also absolutely not the audience for Rings of Power. I don't love Tolkien any more than you do, but you seem much more tolerant of this kind of material than I would be. That's to your credit and definitely not to mine, but it is what it is. I know what I would and wouldn't enjoy. I don't have to watch it to find out.

    Personally, I enjoyed the series for a few reasons. And I fully intend to do a re-read of what was my first foray into adult fantasy. 1. Each novel (or at least most of them) is a self contained story with some big bad that needs taking down. I can pick one up, read it, and I don't feel the immediate need to rush the rest of them because the story isn't really over yet. This is where I feel Game of Thrones is unapproachable. It's not done, it may never be done, and I won't get closure to a story. 2. The characters. Sure, some of them are rip-offs, some of them have very irritating aspects, and the main characters may be Mary Sue and Mr. Mary Sue when it comes to solving problems, but they aren't unpleasant to read. 3. While Goodkind's writing certainly isn't up to snuff and won't be the next prolific exemplar of prose (nor is it always even my definition of "good writing," hell, I've written better short stories) he does enough to give you a scene without languishing on for entirely too long, and without being so vague you have minimal idea of what's going on. Terry is an ass. This much is very true. But he's also dead and I never paid a dime for one of his books so I read them without guilt. They are by all accounts, my favorite fantasy junk food.
