I've been sewing for many years, and I love making clothes, especially shirts.
From Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, I've travelled a lot over the years, usually with a sewing machine as part of my baggage.
I am now retired and live on the North Coast of NSW; retirement gives me even more time to sew.

Arizona, a traditional block.
The colours in this block are supposed to reflect the wonderful natural shades of the state - I don't think I achieved that, but I hope the choice is acceptable to the people of that state.
This block looks difficult but it's quite easy.

Another part of a shirt-making video I made a while ago, this is fitting a sleeve.
Просмотров 10221 день назад
This may be helpful with people when making a shirt, the sleeve is a difficult part of the process. There are two trains of thought about this: One to inset the sleeve by sewing the side of the shirt and sewing up the sleeve, the other is to flat sew, the latter is my preference. (and it's easier). Chrismas is almost here, and this is a simple to make 9.5" block, it would be even better with real Christmas patterned fabric, but we work with what we have. An old 'making a shirt video, the collar'. Can't remember when I made it.

Choosing tonal values when quilting.

A good contrast in tones when choosing fabric for a quilt is important; the right mix of light, dark and/or midtones can make a great difference to the impact of a block. Blog - williamsews.blogspot.com/ Email - williamsews1000@gmail.com

Needles, feet, and thread.

I posted this yesterday, but wasn't happy with it, so attempted to fix it. Yesterday was a low energy day, thank you CFS, and the mosquito who gave it to me so many years ago. Shiny things attract me, such as interesting sewing feet, can't help it. This includes some interesting needles as well as feet, and rainbow thread. Star Cross, a 7.5" finished block - easy to sew.
I admire you people that can sew tiny pieces of material together to make such beautiful blocks! I love to sew but I'm just not that talented to do this.
Well...there are a few bigger bits. Tiny pieces mean I can use smaller scraps. I have just bundled up the tiniest scraps for use in stuffed toys.🐨
I can't get the pdf to come up. Thanks anyway William
You should be able to access it now, it's a Google share thing.
@@williamsews Thank you so much! A really beautiful block!
Pretty choices! Grateful for the editing, William - thank you!
This is very similar but slightly different to a card trick version i designed for a jelly roll challenge years ago. I sold many of my patterns over the years.
Methods are always evolving. Great that you make your own patterns.✅
You can make the most beautiful quilt, pillow covers, notebook covers, potholders with those little gems. I have just done my first scrappy project, lots of wonky little seams... 😂
I've never tried to make small items; it's a good idea.
Such beautifully creative cards. What a family treasure. Thanks for sharing your family story on Remembrance Day.
Those were the great days when people really cared about each other. Those cards are so precious.
Thank you for sharing your family and memories.
Thank you for sharing your precious memories and cards from your grandfather - and reminding us that war is awful. BTW - nice shirt! Well done. And again, thanks.
Lovely that you remember your grandfather and have his messages he sent home.❤
🫂🫂🫂 Great way to remember him.
Those cards are so touching, William. Thanks for sharing. Colleen
Rainbow thread Awesome William.
Wow William. The shirt you are wearing here. Awesome! Great tips. You tube / sewing machine garage has some vids that might help get your Brother machine back running. Thank you for this video!
Thank you, I'll check it out.
Such attention to detail William! Great! Thank you!
Thank you for such a clear tutorial. It has made me want to start dressmaking again.
Thanks for the clear instructions! Excellent demo too 🎉
Great job! You're very patient explaining the process.
If I would have had this tutorial years ago I wouldn't have gotten so stressed out sewing my blouse with the placket. I ended up throwing it out. It was either me or bad pattern instructions. Great video! Easy to follow.
Patterns are often hard to follow, and the drawings are not much help. I'm pleased that this video was of some help.
Very well done ! I haven’t sewn a shirt in awhile, but I need to sew some because they aren’t as easy to find now that knits are so popular.
Wow, the colors just pop on this one, but I'm partial on using black on a quilt. I lived around Amish country and I made a quilt with all blues with black boarders and it was really pretty. This ones a winner!
I wish you had put this out a few months ago when I was struggling to do this block, both the direction you showed and the snail going in the opposite direction. Your instructions would have made putting it together so much easier. The second problem I ran into in putting the top together was making sure the snails were curving in the right direction. Someone pointed out that I had two curving the wrong way when I posted a picture of the top. Luckily, it was a quick fix. I enjoy all your videos.
That's why I emphasised the importance of direction, I made a total mess of it the first time. It must look dramatic as a whole quilt. Thank you for your comments.
You said 1" squares and i was 😮 lol. You're so calm and maybe I'll try little pieces. I usually make 12 1/2" blocks because the little pieces scare me.
I do seem to like fiddly bits, this, at least this only starts with small pieces.
Very effective in black and white.
I’m not sure I have seen this block before. I like it and I liked your disaster block as well. It’s fall here. I’m visiting the Smoky Mountains and the fall colors are unbelievable.
My favourite time of year.
I’m going to try this block. You broke it down so even I can understand it. I used to have a beautiful jacaranda tree in my front yard in Florida. We had one orange tree and gardenia bushes too. When we had the windows open we got such lovely scents.
The garden sounds wonderful. The block looks complicated but is fairly easy.
Lovely block. Very clear explanation. Thanks!
That's a beautiful block. I think even plain colors would work well too.
Thanks ! I’m going to try this!
Nice
Very effective for such a quick star
Love how you put them together with such ease in your explanation. Thank you.
That is a lovely star! The centre square could feature something fussy-cut!
That would work well.
I like it!
I like this star😊
Thank you. Ive never made a collar
I hope this video helped, thank you for your reply.
A grand tutoring session indeed!📍
That trick with the string for crisp points was brilliant. I struggle with that a lot. I never seem to get a proper point. I will now! Thanks and I love the bunnies!
Thank you, it really is the best way for collar peaks.
Good information to know before starting a quilt. Thank you.
I had forgotten about this block. I love it.
Love scraps
That's quit a collection of needles! I usually just buy one pack at a time.
I can't seem to help myself. 😞
I like this one. It seems like it would be an easy one to do with dramatic results.
It's very easy.
Very nice, i like how it looks
Love the ruffler
U do pretty work
Very interesting block
I like it, will have to give it a try.
Your videos are always interesting and informative.😊 Thank you.
I've used a ruffler foot back when I had my Singer featherweight. The wing needle looks interesting, I should try it. I like the rainbow thread, it would be great for FMQ as well as decorative stitching on a garment. Thanks for sharing.
