I like your rant, but I don't think AI is exactly stealing. So much of cross stitch patterning is such really basic stuff it feels like public domain to me. For example, on a sampler, the letter A is the letter A. A basic font is bound to look like something that's been done before. Of course, some frilly alphabets are delightful and unexpected, but they've been "stolen" from a long-ago 7-year-old child now buried. Wait long enough and everything becomes public domain. Fair enough. So when AI takes something from here and something else from there and combines it in a new way, I'm fine with that. Or consider tattoos. Artists use the same motifs over and over, sometimes with very little change (or no change at all). That's just a choice in that medium, and I think cross stitch is similar in that respect. I see humans take well-known graphic designs from TV shows or whatever and render them in cross stitch, and I have no problem with that. Technically, of course, that is someone else's graphic design. But the cross stitch itself is a new element. A direct copy of a cross stitch that is still a cross stitch is a different matter. I appreciate that the original creator suffers a loss in those instances. But it's still confusing. Once we humans buy a pattern, we are free to change the colors and the motifs in the cross stitch. Cross stitch has always been sort of a wild West. In other media, copyright law has forbidden the original purchaser to make a modification to the artwork. But cross stitch has historically not been that way. So when AI takes a recognizable recent artwork and either copies it or converts it, how far afield is that to what humans also have done within cross stitch. It's a new area of copyright law and it will take a while to shake out. Your observation that AI is making *bad* art based on good art, is a separate matter. That's akin to a tattoo master being offended at a bad rendition of a snake. That's a matter of aesthetics and ultimately it's between the designer and the buyer, even when the designer is AI.

Hello Mandy and Stitches! She's a lovely kitty. I love your genius idea for finishing off your cicada project. I have several of those signs from Dollar Tree or Dollarama. I've got 2 WIPs very close to a finish. But then it is FFO time, and that will be on me because they will become sewing projects.

Thank you for the rant I was not aware of the new developments. I also do not wish to purchase from companies supporting AI art as there is no ethical way to employ it. It was all trained on intellectual property it had no right to use. Unfortunately I bought a few designs from Artecy before discovering they have a small selection of AI charts. What HAED is doing is wrong. Making you pay to pay is absurd! Instead of crazy I've been using wild or bonkers. Hope that helps! ❤️❤️❤️

as always-incredible stitching! I was hoping that I could find the cicada pattern, it's stunning! Can't wait-hopefully it'll be released and I can purchase it eventually! :) I was working on catching up on my postcrossing and decided to catch up on floss tube! I know you'll appreciate that comment! :) As for you rant, I've already expressed my thunks on it all and I totally agree. This past weekend, I had the pleasure of meeting one of the artists that is no longer with HAED. I won't kiss and tell, but I will say that the artist community is deeply saddened by the turn that has been taken by HAED and that unfortunately for us stitchers, we're going to be seeing a lot more of them 'just ship' because of AI and the bs that is going along with it. I purchased from another full coverage company last week-INCREDIBLE service-above and beyond what I could have imagined. And honestly, my purchases with HAED will probably be dwindling down to none as I now know where several of the artists that we all love have went to and why they have decided to do so. Love the rant! I really try to avoid AI artwork but I am finding it impossible to find FC designers that don’t have any in their shop. It’s not enough to see if there is an artist-you need to check that the artwork itself has a ©️. The only project I have ufo’ed on the past few years is one that I fell for because it looked like there was an artist. When I searched artist and found the artwork separate from the xstich company, I saw they stated it was ai. So the video is almost done and still no Stitches!😂 This cat lady needs her fix. -Debbie 🦉🐊

There have been many times over the years that I have questioned business decisions. I wish I had taken a screenshot and saved it, but back in the day when they were on the Yahoo boards, I suggested Ciro Marchetti when they were asking for artist recommendations. I was told essentially no, that his style didn’t fit them and they weren’t interested.
