I have only seen these once at our feeder. We get the Rose breasted each spring. Beautiful painting .
They are a rare treat here in Mid-Michigan! Always exciting to see. They seem to prefer platform feeders.
Awesome painting. I have never heard of this type of bird but I will watch for it now. I live in Ontario but Eastern near the St Lawrence River and Lake Ontario.
Your area is within their breeding range, so you should be able to find them! They like tree tops and despite the bold colors, they are really hard to spot. If you know their call it really helps. In the spring they are easiest to find when there are less leaves and they are readily calling to find mates. www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Blackburnian_Warbler/lifehistory
@@bohanart Thank you so much.
Excellent tutorial and painting
Thanks! I'm glad you found it useful.
Good idea on when to trace, thanks
I can hear this painting! 😁
They should be coming back here in Mid-michigan any time now!
Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do. Paint not what you see exactly but what you want to see
Ideally!
@@bohanart I do like how you built your background
Amazing! ❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks... They definitely are a favorite bird of mine.
So beautiful!
They are great little birds. Always fun to see them in migration.
Glad that I found your channel. I love painting our little songbirds. Ovenbird is on my to-do list for this summer. I will include its oven-like nest😊 I used to live in Lansing too!
Good luck with the painting! Sounds like a great concept.
Amazing work! Thanks for sharing your process.
Thanks... This was a fun one!
@@bohanart 🤩
Que hermosas pinturas, l love the way you use the masking fluid and the care you take
Thanks! Masking things really helps me...even if it slows down the process in the beginning.
👍👍🤩🙏
Why not just use graphite transfer paper? Also I’m confused when you mention if you’re using a high quality tracing paper you can get 2 or 3 transfers from it? How can one re-use a piece that already has one specific drawing on it for then an entirely different image?? 🤔
Great question. Basically it is a much cleaner result. Graphite transfers have the graphite over the whole back and tend to leave lots of smudges and accidental transfers on the relatively delicate watercolor paper. WIth the tracing paper you on'y have the graphite exactly where you need it, so it is a much cleaner, less smudgy result. When making your own transfer with tracing paper, you can transfer that SAME IMAGE if you make a mistake on your piece. It doesn't get reused for any other image/drawing. I just throw it away once the painting is finished.
@@bohanart Gotcha. I find the Saral brand to be excellent at both transferring and not smudging. Important not to lean on it while transferring and if there is a tiny smudge or two they are tiny and easily dabbed off with a putty eraser.
@@CC-ho5lw if it works for you, go for it! I always ended up having stray marks. THe tracing paper is also handy for me because I often only transfer part of the sketch at a time... like the background lines, then do the wash, remove the frisket and then transfer the detail for the foreground. The translucency of the tracing paper makes that really easy to align as I go.
Absolutely fascinating I’m loving all your videos. Thank you so much for making them.❤❤
Thanks for the kind words!
Awesome so glad I found your channel❤❤
Thanks for watching!
AAAGGGHHHH! So simple dammit why didn’t I see this sooner?!!!❤
It sure has helped me keep things neat and clean.
Beautiful rendition. I love all the different greens. I have never heard of an Oven Bird. Looks a little like a cross between a sparrow and wren. Love voiceover description and reasons for using synthetic. Wanting to save my better brushes, I grabbed some brushes from the dollar store to use on a project with ink and was surprised at how well they performed. I don’t expect them to last long but no worries with them either.😊
Those mimic brushes are a great option. They all wear out, but those are at a nice price point and are a good compromise. See what you think.
I do like synthetic squirrel too. They're not that much of a downgrade for sure and they hold a fair amount of water (I use quills usually so it's a lot)
I know what you mean... Quills stay super sharp, but I feel like I'm continually reloading them.
the style feels very storybook I like it
Thanks for the kind words.
Wow 😍

Awesome, I will definitely try this. Thank you so much for taking the time to show us your tips of the trade.
It definitely helps me.
@@bohanart just a add in, I tried you process today and it worked great. My tracing paper is by Canson and states on it it is resitant to scraping. It worked very well. Thank you again, I found this is a lot better way to transfer an image to watercolour paper.
@@lynnfrenette8706Happy to hear!

Lovely painting. We rescue wildlife and love our squirrels. We feed them in an attached catio. Some of them can ring a tap bell when their nut bowl is empty. We have hand-raised a few and they are wonderful creatures. We used to open the window so they could come back into the house but we had trouble getting them back outside. Chasing squirrels in a house filled with antiques is not fun but it is funny. Thanks for a lovely video. I subscribed!
That is SO COOL! It must be exciting to have them in close and to know them personally.
It is truly wonderful. Skunks are my favorite and I have raised them inside my home. They are amazing sweet creatures as well. Opossums are a lot of fun too. We just love having them around. @@bohanart
@@Kandicookheller I love skunks! That must be really great to experience all of them up close.

Thanks for the kind words.
Beautiful😊
Thanks!!!
Beautiful painting! I paint birds in watercolour too but my backgrounds are never as detailed as yours!
Thanks! I used to paint more simple backgrounds which can be really fun, but have gravitated to more complex ones in most paintings. It can be fun to have more elements to play around with. It definitely slows things down. Sometimes I think there can be too much detail.
What a lovely watercolor! A wonderful work of art! Your piece of art reflects your amazing soul as a talented artist! Magical beauty!
Thanks for the kind words!
@@bohanart You are welcome! Have a wonderful day! :)
I much preferred the videos with commentary. I'm interested to know your thought process behind the painting. I had to slow down the older videos as I just couldn't take it all in. This is a far more comfortable pace.
Thanks for the feedback. That is helpful. I'm considering redoing a selection of the older ones with commentary. I did commentaries for a while, then stopped for a year or so because they took so much longer and they weren't getting many views. Any of my videos over 6-7 minutes probably has commentary.
I've just found your channel and am blown away by your beautiful birds. I, too, love to paint birds, and this is what I aspire to. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks, Cathy. Watercolor is fantastic for birds!
Thanks, enjoying the longer videos, beautiful bird.

Beautiful painting, no yapping
Thanks!
Beautiful painting and Timelapse. Appreciate your tips and techniques. Thank you.
Thanks! Hopefully some info is helpful.
That is fantastic, I love it.
Gracias! They are gorgeous little birds.
Loved it!
Thanks! It was a fun one to work on.
Love your painting, video and loved the "yapping" commentary. Backgrounds are normally my most unliked part of painting so often leave them out. The way you explained moving around may help to correct that, I hope! Found your way of transferring the sketch to the paper very interesting. I will definitely try this method. Do you use a heavier graphite pencil to enable the transfer better?
I use really hard pencils for the transfer... 5H. I want them as light as possible and softer leads tend to smudge for me. I trace on a really hard surface when making the transfer with the hard pencil.
