Original 1969 Vietnam Jungle Jacket 173rd Airborne
Chris. Where did you go? What are you collecting now? How are things?
Very nice put it on and wear it in honor of the person.
Cool my Great Uncle served with the 501st PIR James Francis Jacobson . After the war he Became a Priest a La Salette Missionary.
I'm still around. Just busy managing all the social accounts for my company (@artifactbags)
Chris. Where did you go? I have watched your videos so many times now, and crave more content. Still collecting, still out there?
I remember and loved the 80s baby blue ones, I wish I could find them but vans doesn't make them anymore FFS
Pop a curd to get on the boardwalk. SF/
Great video very informative thank you . I have an original alpha ma1 how can I tell when it was issued?
Thanks! Check inside the pockets for a tag with a DSA or DLA code. DSA-68 would be 1968, etc.
tám means eight. i believe that the ARVN versions all have the epaulettes AND the reinforced shoulder piece that has a curved quarter stitching from the tip of the epaulette down to the shoulder.
Good to know re: tám. The point I was making was this shirt was tailor modified post production and yes South Vietnamese worn pieces often have the French construction details - a carryover from the First Indochina war.
Have some vintage 80s and 90s era vans coming in soon all like new still..I prefer the older vans for good comfort.
Hi, is it for sale? This shirt doesn't have the epaulettes like other tiger stripes shirts I see that were used during the Vietnam war.
My dad was 5th Group, 3rd Mike. I used to wear his old tigers to play in the woods back in the 80s as a kid. They were super soft and made me invisible in the woods on Ft Bragg. I eventually tore them up, but we still have a nice set kicking around. They really are like pajamas.
I had a blue one with trackers and copers. Cross bones. Loved that damn thing. Pretty sure I slept with it.
Beautiful deck. Set up for a total kook.
With all that protection the board feels like it's 20 lbs. I would guess this was purchased by a parent for their kid and they were ridiculously upsold on accoutrements at the shop.
Amazing pieces!! Wow
Thanks for watching!
That is crazy rare!
Indeed. One of the rarer SOG pieces because they were only used for a specific period of time and only by CCN (Command & Control North), whereas STABOs, SOG knives, 1-0 Jackets, CISO boonies, etc were used across SOG. All SOG pieces are scarce considering how items exist today versus the demand for them.
Another awesome video! I love learning about the construction. I have modified a few new production jackets so they have a mix of vintage and modern features. Just jumped in and bought a sewing machine and went to town. Somehow I remembered my home ec lessons from the 1980’s
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the great review. I have collected military items for years. Your knowledge of construction techniques add so much. My father spent 18 months in Vietnam as a Marine Infantry Officer. None of his field uniforms made it back. They would literally begin to rot and fall apart due to the humidity and inability to launder. My dad said they would be resupplied by air and change into new uniforms. I have some pictures of his time and the marines are wearing a mash up of different patterns and mix of green and ERDL camo
Thanks for watching! Bringback jungle fatigues that were actually worn on operations are scarce because like your father's fatigues, they deteriorated in the jungle. Most of the ones I've found are the badged garrison fatigues that were not worn in the field. I've been collecting Vietnam uniforms for 40+ years and have very few USMC pieces brought home by vets versus other units.
@@chrishughes24x7 I do have his ERDL jacket he wore while teaching at division schools in DaNang. No USMC stencil but there are slight holes from his captains bars.
@@drew3804schannel-vk7ii That's great you have that piece!
@@chrishughes24x7 thanks. It’s my favorite piece because it was my father’s.
@@drew3804schannel-vk7ii Understandable. An heirloom.
I don't think he was insubordinate, it was just done in a bit of a hurry. most likely with combat taking out a lot of men, replacements were in abundance. Roles had to be filled quickly. So men were hastily promoted. I knew of men that went from PFC to Tech Sgt or even 1Sgt in 6 months or less. He would have worn this uniform not in combat but around base, camp or out n about. I doubt it was anything negative bouncing around ranks & responsibilities & roles, he was given letters of commendation & was awarded prestigious medals. Let us think highly & not discredit or deformate his character.
All of this is written about in detail in Mark Bando's books "Avenging Eagles: Forbidden Tales of the 101st Airborne Division in World War 2" as well as "Vanguard of the Crusade".
Reminds me of a shirt that Monroe would wear from too close for comfort show
There were a lot of bold striped rugbys being worn during that era. LL Bean, Gant, etc...
i think im in love
Understandable!
Hi Saw a tan boonie on your insta, would you send me your email would love to talk to you about it Yours DC
Beautiful piece of history, love the ratnuts and the dome truck bolts, very original, thanks
Thanks! It's in as-found condition.
This is pretty much as beautiful as tiger stripes can get imo. I hope I will one day find a repro as bright as this one. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching. My favorite are gold tigers. Google those!
@@chrishughes24x7 oh i know golden tiger, still prefer the one in your video though :)
Won’t skate it or can’t skate it?😂
With all the reissues available, why skate an OG piece of history? The ball bearings are frozen and those poly wheels will break down pronto. As to you questioning my ability to skate, why do you even care?
@@chrishughes24x7 of course you’d never skate the original you baboon, I’m talking about the reissues with still no nose or concave. Built better then popsicles and they’ll last longer
Where can I find one of those jackets?
Wool Eisenhower "Ike" jackets are not hard to find. One attributed to Airborne, Ranger, or FSSF are highly coveted and not easy to find.
@@chrishughes24x7 which sites are best for Airborne ike jackets, those are the ones I’m looking for
Alway check ur pockets!!! Ty for sharing!!! ❤
What do think it’s worth? I’ve got a red Tommy Guerrero from 1985 I used to ride as a kid. I’ve got the deck only but I’ve never seen an original red one from the 80s for sale even on eBay ! Even in reproduction a few years ago they didn’t make that many. Thanks
I haven't kept up with prices but I can say they've appreciated over the last 10 years. An eBay completed listings search would be a good starting place for comps.
I know Mark. He helped me learn the plight of my father who was 501PIR/101st Airborne. I met him at a couple of reunions, communicated through email and I too have a few of his books. He was so incredibly helpful to me and I am grateful for him. My brother got my dad's jump suit but he stored it in a locker, in Georgia where he was serving in the Navy, and it was lost to mold. I'm thrilled to see that you are carrying on their stories. Thank you for that.
Mark has written my favorite books about the 101st in WWII. That's great he helped you connect dots regarding your father's service!
I've been wearing vans since 1968. Its nice to see another fan. Got 15 pair right now. Never give up. 10.5W
Nice Van's bro nothing like the 80's so retro
@chris Are you still collecting? I would love to have an opportunity to talk with you. I am a collector in Mexico City and also a RUclipsr.
4 crommets is first type product for sure J
Another friend, a USMC Force Recon Vietnam vet gave me a WW2 USMC paratrooper jacket which is in mint condition. I won't discard this one!
Lesson learned! Ha.
Years ago, a friend who was USAF Vietnam Vet gave me a US Tiger Stripe Jacket. He worked with SF troops out of Ban Me Thuot. Unfortunately, I outgrew it and threw it away. I've regretted it ever since.
That's unfortunate but fortunately, tigers are out there and an original replacement can still be had.
Hey Chris, I've watched a couple of your vids. Some I've watched more then once. I really like them.
Thanks!
L2B, not MA-1, check the smaller flaps on the side pockets .
Great stuff, love it ✊🏻👍🏻
It’s not a handkerchief in the pocket. It’s a cravat bandage that was very popular at the time.
Although the same color, this is a small square handkerchief and not the large triangular shaped cravat.
I didn't know what they were but I had a pair of pants like that back in 84 I picked up at a surplus store for let's say under $10 I used them for work pants and they held up quite well before the day of the internet and information
I miss those pre internet days when many things were under $10!
Would you be interested in selling the patrol cap and a jacket if you have?
Personal Collection. NFS.
Thanks! And where is that bag from?
Thanks for watching. That bag is something I / my company (www.artifactbags.com @artifactbags) made. Not something we currently produce but we make plenty of other totes. Check out the site or our Instagram.
So awesome. Watching this on Veteran's Day 2022. 🇺🇸 Thanks to all Veterans! I am seeking vintage shirts or outerwear from Vietnam- 173 Airborne LRRP Ranger. That would be the best. I 🇺🇸💘
I wish they made UHMW Lappers and Copers today, that would be awesome.
Fantastic! A replica company would make tons producing modern versions of the traditional canvas.
That's worth a lot of money!
nice pattern
Chris, hope all is well. Missing these types of videos you produced.
Greetings. If I may ask, you always throw away your company name. I have no idea what it actually is, could you explain please?

This Shirt is know as the College Blue- Jordanhill college where PE teachers wore this as part of the kit. My first view was Bobby Clark , ex Aberdeen and Scotland goalkeeper wearing it to teach in 1970 at St.Peters RC school in Aberdeen. It was standard kit for PE teachers before that.I got mine in 1976 but my Colleague, Frank Strang, said his dad had one when he qualified, perhaps more than 20 years before that. Interesting that Patagonia picked up this idea in Scotland in 1970.Was it when training at Glenmore Lodge for climbing, skiing and outdoor education. It cost £8.90 pence from R.W.Forsyths in Renfield stree tGlasgow 1976
It would not surprise me if Yvon Chouinard (Patagonia) appropriated school colors / patterns for his rugbys. If I recall correctly, he discovered the durable shirts in the 1970's on a climb / trip in South America and felt they would make great climbing shirts.
I had one for many years in the 80s. Best shirt I had. Wore it to shreds.
