Finding old saws and making them run again. Stihl, Husqvarna, McCulloch, Homelite, pioneer, Jonsered
Videos of me repairing or modifying my chainsaws. General around the farm saw work, firewood, bandmill, clearing fence lines, cutting back hedgerows. Some new and vintage saws just doing what they do! Theories, opinions and experiences I have or had from this life on the farm! I usually have a pretty good story!

Like that 10-10 mac. She makes out nice
Thanks! It's not too bad!
That saw is a beast with those worn out bearings and ripping rounds like that. Thanks for sharing Stay safe
Thanks, I am still in awe myself!
Im thinking it will send a ball bearing once it eats its way through the cage that holds it
If the seals hold that long!
When you were filming this video i bet you half way thought it was going to blow ? but it hung in there, impressive saw
I did! It just kept chugging along!
Nice job saving the blumax 💪
Thanks
nice little beater saw.
Thanks!
She is a runner,,,i am surprised it starts so well,, and it runs pretty good ,, i would have thought the crank seal would be gone by now,, maybe its not the crank bearings making all that noise???cool to see it run,,and have a happy new year,,, look forward to some more videos
I was thinking the same so I pulled the bar and chain and the recoil. Just turning the flywheel with the plug out it's all you can hear! I don't feel any radial play, I'm assuming that's the only reason the seals aren't wiped out!
I had an echo straight shaft trimmer that was locked up, I broke it loose, tons of bearing noise, but I let it idle through 2 tanks of richened fuel. I gave it to Greg to run hard, and he liked it so much he wanted to buy it. He did several clearing jobs with it, bearings cleared up. The only thing we have noticed is that when it shuts down, it stops almost instantly. Greg thinks it is the clutch bearing. By the way Landon, if you weren’t sure, this is Matthew Dunham.
I got you bud! I know your Handle! It's crazy how somethings just don't make sense. How has this thing not died yet!
@ it’s quite impressive. Especially from a machinist point of view, let alone the small engine mechanic point of view. Crazy how bad some things can get while still being able to run.
That's one tough little saw!!!
I'm impressed!
I take the grinder to the kill switches on these saws. When you shorten it up you dont turn them off by mistake near as much. These saws have good power, the 54.6cc one with a mild port job will keep right up to a 550xp. About my only complaint with em is the old school anti vibe, it is easy to wreck the rubber mounts if you get it stuck and my hands tingle after a couple tanks of gas.
I was thinking the same about the switch! Chop! Try well padded gloves, helps a ton! There are some so thick in the palms I call them Monkey Mits!
@@sawsonthefarm I went with a more expensive fix, I bought an echo 590, it's pretty smooth it has nice anti vibe. I hate thick gloves.
Nice! I hear ya on the gloves, sometimes I just don't want them!
Yes Sir, that kill switch got you a couple of times. I always scratched my head wondering why Stihl mades theirs "up-is-off" but maybe this is why... 🤣🤣
It’s always a surprise when it cuts off!
Happy New Year!!!!!
Same to you!
Want a nice little machine. Super clean. Nothing worse than knowing you have something but can’t seem to find it, this happens almost daily for me, not really but sure seems like it. Thanks for sharing Stay safe
Seriously! It can be rough!
Nice vintage saws you have there. What caught my eye in the video was the Massey in the background (lol) love tractors as much as I do saws. Thanks for sharing Stay safe
Thanks, that's a 2005 model 1533 my dad bought new with a backhoe!
That’s a pretty cool saw
Thanks!
Cool little saw mate 👍
Thank you!
Nice saws, i only have a few of the homelites the one i would like to get running is a 1050, I have a oem new cylinder for it if the old one is toast, and then i have another 1050 saw that is totally toast, that will be a parts saw, got to love those vintage saws 4 sure
I have a 1050 as well, trying to convert it to 3/8 but I might just have to buy a .404 bar and chain
Senior moments!!!! I have them often! LOL!!!!!
You're telling me! I started to second guess myself! Did I give it away?
Great little saw,, those ez's are all over the place,,, very popular,, ,, I have one also,, ,tiny little thing, but cool,, the saw collecting can be very addictive,, I have them stashed all over too, but its the same old story,,, cant find anything when you need it,,, cool saws,, enjoyed seeing them all!!!!!
It really does get out of hand! 😂 I have so many!
super ez's are very nice saws, very strong for 40cc's but vibrate a lot, i paid $2 for mine at an auction and my brother paid $6 for his clean early model super ez.
That's a steal, those are great saws!
Start that xl 12 tonight at 11:59 pm let it warm up 30 seconds ,then hold it wide open !!! Hollering Happy New Year !!! You will see the light from the combustion chamber in the dark too.
Lmao! that would be hilarious!
Awesome old saws!!!! Thanks! Happy New Year!
Same to you! Thank you!
Those are some nice looking old homelites,,,that c-72 is a nice old vintage saw ,,,would be nice in any saw collection,,,, and its always cool to have the homelite bars in such good condition they look great,, ,,, I have a few d homelites as well and super happy to have them in my collection,, as always another great video,,, sure like seeing old vintage saws
I really enjoy getting them out! Thanks for watching!
gotta love those old homelites. all 3 of them look to be in great shape!
Thanks! The XL is probably in the best shape and man does it rip!
Them ol homelites still spin up tho, for ol gals
Oh yeah! 🤙🏻
What muffler are you running on your 359? I’m looking for a different style than the stock one.
It's a custom stainless pipe I made!
@ do you by chance make them for people? Is so I’d be highly interested!!
@@aaronbadgett4439 I'm just getting things set up so I can do stuff like this, hopefully in the near future!
@@sawsonthefarm keep me in the top of your list for when you do
@ absolutely!
She definitely is a great saw. Love the old Mac’s something about the way they sound when cutting or idling; like an old big block Chevy engine. I need to find a clutch cover for my 10-10 so I can enjoy running an old Mac. Thanks for sharing Stay safe
Usually someone on ebay will have one! That's probably your best bet. I agree, the sound is unique!
I have had several different versions of these. 52cc 58cc 62cc you name it. They are great for what they are, cheap easy to repair. When the brother-in-law or anyone needs to borrow a chainsaw. This is what they get. If the burn it up, crush it, or it gets stolen. I repair it or replace it cheaply either way. I buy them all the time from 25 to 50 bucks. Repair them to see if i can and then keep it, sell or trade it, and sometimes give them away. Gave one to a teen wanting to start a firewood side hustle. He used it a couple years saved money, bought him an excellent used pro saw. He gave it back to me with three new bars and chains and simply said thank you. I then gave it to my elderly neighbor for a backup. They are great for learning how to repair and maintain a saw. Their week points are cheap plastics, fuel lines rot, and easy starts break cause people try to drop start them. Oh and people melt the clutch covers running them with the brake engaged. All operator errors. The engines themselves are great runners until they are straight gassed. Then you put on another cylinder kit for 20 shipped and repeat. If you buy one they will seem to multiply. I have one ported that lays down yje hate on my cousins $800 stihl. It pisses him off so much its the only saw I use around him. Cause he knows i have expensive pro saws and is such a fan boy this just makes me smile. He will call me and tell me not to bring that p.o.s. saw and guess what I bring. Yep that pos and another one as a backup.
I'm dyin over here! Lmao! That's great! Thank you so much! 🤣😂
All things considered, that it was swimming in water and you got it to run and cut is very impressive. Good on you and your perseverance and mechanical ability. Great job. Perhaps if it does not cost too much, put new bearings and keep this saw in the bed of your truck for emergency use. Thanks for sharing Stay safe.
That's a good point! I have the bearings already! Thank you!
These guys have a great idea,, take it down and do the work it needs,,and open that muffler up,,, or build a pipe for it and see what you can achieve would make some good content for your videos
I'm leaning that way! I already have the bearings! It could definitely use a pipe, that muffler is horrendous!
cuts pretty good.
Not bad for how it came to me, locked up! lol!
Love the analogy of “a skeleton in a garbage can”. On to the previous video on this saw. Thanks for sharing Stay safe
There you are! I was beginning to wonder! Thanks Dirk!
@ lol, had family over and had to be a good host! I tried convincing the wife that watching Saws on the farm with guests is very festive, however she did not think so!
lol! You're awesome man! Some things are more important I understand. I may have been in a similar situation this past week! lol! 👍🏻thanks man!
Cool that you got that submerged basket case running. Be interesting to see how long she'll run on those crunchy bearings...
Kinda what I was wondering!
Thanks I enjoy watching your videos
Thank you! I appreciate that! I got a few out there now!
These zenoah clones are pretty simple to bullet proof, take the same bearings as a husqvarna 61,162,266 etc
That's good to know! I do have an extra set!🤔thanks for that info!
These are only throwaway saws to spoiled western wasters.
Yeah most wouldn't waste the time! I see a lot of people obviously like these saws! Should I tear it down and do the bearings?
@@sawsonthefarm four times I have tried posting a reply to you here. I guess the algorithm doesn't like my ch1na angle. Yes you should rebuild it. Change the muffler too.
@@sawsonthefarm These can be hardy firewood saws for the less well off and budget conscious. Sometimes they aren't delivered in a condition to reach their full potential and need tweaking, also a longer running in period. As delivered they have maybe 70% power but over a few hours work the power noticeably increases.
I wonder how long it would go with those bearings! 🤔
Are you going to tear it apart maybe change bearings and a muffler mod or maybe not worth the time etc..
I don't know, she's pretty rough! Probably not worth the trouble. The top of the piston is pretty pitted too!
@@sawsonthefarm pistons are ruff top by design, not pitted
@@thomasmorris302 I agree!!!!
It's common on these saws to have big pits in the piston? I'm not talking a rough surface finish.
@ Check the compression to see If it effects it much?
Putting bearings in it would be a good video.
Yeah, don't forget i still have the 257 torn down for rebuild! Just ordered a set of SKF's and a gasket/seal kit, so we have that build yet to come!
@ As my dad used to say “Hurry up every chance you get”. Lol!!!
@ mine says," Hurry up and I'll wait for ya"!
@ Lol!!! Happy New Year!! I’ll send you some “Round To Its”
@@rodneymiddleton9624 lol! Nice! I like that!
It almost deserves some bearings! Thanks!
i like the chaps and ear pro
I got so excited to run this thing I totally forgot and had to run back in!
It reminds me of a crap brand here in Ireland ProPlus i see a lot of repair shops with old steel barrels full of them all scrap
They are basically throw away saws, when you can replace them for around $100
This saw was horrible abused soaked in water, still runs and cuts how is that "crap"??
It is definitely a testament to the resilience of these "cheap" saws! I wouldn't have expected this saw to perform as well as it did!
First
Nice!
First thing to check/replace is the carb metering diaphragm for deformation and deterioration especially since it's been left outside and moisture has contaminated the fuel and pretty much permeated the entire saw. What kind of saw handler are you not to know these things?
Oh stop, I checked it first thing this morning! It's in good shape! But I did find a crack in the fuel line just inside the tank! I do appreciate your comment! Good looking out! Thanks for your view! 👍🏻
It's a generic chinese chainsaw of 45cc to 52cc that can wear any 3rd party branding. Parts are cheap on ebay and AliExpress.
I sold one of these yesterday for $25😂 non running from the dump, took several weeks. I’m the future, will leave them at the dump haha
This one is really rough! It may be toast!
Too bad someone left it for dead under water - they make a cheap lil saw that you don't care if someone jacks it off the back of the truck when you go to town. Carb is prolly stopped up.
I have a few zenoah clones, they have good power for their size if you get the 54.5cc one. While I like them I dont spend much time fixing them, I replace the complete motor. The older smaller cc ones like this saw have better plastics than the 62/63cc ones they sell now. So what I do is buy a new saw like the 100 dollar pinkway 63cc and stick the better old blue plastics and recoil on it.
There you go! So they are all pretty much the same?
@@sawsonthefarm Yes I have a poor running 45cc one like yours but orange, two 54.5cc and a older blown up 62cc one. You can swap recoils, tanks and plastics from one to the other. The motors internals are different tho. The 45/52cc saw has a shorter stroke crank so be careful swapping cylinders. I put the older 62's plastics on a cheap supmix 6200 (54.6 cc) saw to make a decent saw.
When I work on those types of muffkins I just leave then on the work bench overnight and the next day they are all freed up and no more bees in them ⚒️ .
