Start drawing things that exist around you, slowly learn lighting and dimension in your own way and then move onto more creative designs from your mind, im saying this as a BaHons holder in illustration, you know you best, and finding it out naturally is always the best way
@@Ethan_Anemoiapolis thanks and I will practice that
Usually, I look up references for lighting the face. I also do a 'hard light' filter with the enviroment color, and layer on the lighting using a water color brush. Hopes this helps :)
Find your light source and just start by trying to see where the shadows would go, then add a darker shadows. Make sure you don’t use airbrush too much on shading because it makes the skin look muddy. Try using a solid brush and mark out the areas with the shadow and go in with a blur tool to gently blur out some of the edges to make it look more gentle and less muddy. (If that last part makes sense) You can add highlights to show where the direct light hits the skin. Do the same with the hair <3 I love your character ant how you drew ‘em! I’m so excited to see where your art journey takes you!
That is generally good advice, but they need to reach a certain degree when that becomes even slightly useful to them
@Art_In_A_Can I know where I put mu light sorce and generally where the shading goes the hard part for me is how much to shade
@Art_In_A_Can and I don't have a lot of those brushes bc I use my Samsung sketchbook and my phone to draw, not procreate bc I can't afford an iPad and it is only on iPad
@@De_ogen there’s no need for any sort of fancy brushes, the started basic brush is more then enough to create art! Don’t think that just because you can’t afford expensive art supplies/tools you can’t do art. We all start somewhere with limited resources, the only few thing all artists have in common is imagination and the desire to create and that’s more then enough to start doing art! <3
@Art_In_A_Can I know that. It is just that it is harder to get somewhere when you can't afford the fee's to get out of nowhere
For the hair, I'd go dark to light. It allows it to have really good depth. For the fac, go a little darker and more saturated, then add lightness to points closest to the light. I'd reccomend looking at metal face masks for easy definition kf light and dark. The shiny places are light. You could also concider a webpage like Art Station's Female Head Light tool. That's about the best I can do as my shading is one of my worst points.
@amberblyledge7859 I am happy with the hair I drew, but other than that, thank you, and FYI, I am drawing a male face, not female. But thank you for the help. Most of my art skill is self taught, and I learned from tutorials on yt like jakodar and the guy who does "common mistakes artists make when..." and "the clothes are for censorship purposes only and do not affect the physics of this drawing," guy. So thanks for being polite about this
i'd try asding more contrast if you can! make the shadows darker, and asd highlights to shinier parts, like the eye. i'd also suggest looking at references online to see how the shadows would fall. for the hair, i'd suggest using more uniform lines of light, and shading the rest like normal :]
@othrwrldlysystm for the hair, it is supposed to be a lot more unorganized and chaotic bc the hair type is a thick head of hair but thin strands, so it will be frizzy and chaotic. But other than that, thank you so much.

I used the colors I did, so it would be easier to see the lines. In some places, it didn't work as well, but it worked well enough.
I think it looks great, but some tips I'd give is that you made the ears positioned too high, making it more of a looking down than straight forward. Lower the ears down and space out the eyes and the eyebrow. The nose is kind of too far from the lips too. Make sure that the proportions are almost thirds. Hair line to between eyebrows, between the eyebrows to end of the nose, end of the nose to chin. It should be around a third for each section. I see that you made a guideline to position the facial parts, but the face should be a bit lower. The hair, due to where the face is positioned, looks like there's no muscle/fat on it that separates skull and hair. But honestly, it looks very good. Just some proportional errors, that's all. We all start from somewhere and that looks better than where I've started.
hey!! it looks great!! for a tip, I'd suggest that you make the width of the nose the same as the eyes. also make the edges of the nose line up with the inner corners of the eyes. it's looking great so far!! last tip: the face is normally built in thirds: the hair line to between the eyebrows, in between the eyebrows to just under the nose, and just under the nose to the bottom of the chin!! so basically, just practice proportions. you're doing great. Keep going!!
@junglejamble1246 Thank you! I will work on it
It’s looking great! I would suggest that for another practice, try drawing with a grid. That can help you practice gauging distance between details on the face. There are plenty of websites that can add a grid to your reference photo, then you want to use a ruler to create the same exact grid on your paper. Then you can use that as a guideline. The way you’re currently sketching is essential to improving, but drawing with a grid can be a good additional tool!
Try to think of it as a 3d object instead of just a flat image, this can take a bit but it will help you improve significantly. I recommend starting by drawing shapes such as qubes and spheres and shading them as practice. Or another way is to go into an image editing or art program (doesn’t matter the quality free tools are completely valid) and drawing something, then warp it at an angle to appear foreshortened (like when you look down a hallway) and then replicate it by hand. Or blobs work as long as you keep the 3d form in mind (like working with clay)
Also props to you for asking for help! It takes guts! I didn’t back when i should have and I believe I could have improved faster if only I’d asked. Keep up the good work and use references!
@yes_hello_how_are_you that is true to think it as 3d but also you are supposed to draw on it as if it is a flat plane bc the eye sockets the lips the nose and other indents and extrusions are what cause the curve so you do it with mainly shading to make it look 3d bc if you do it where you draw on it as if it is a curved plane it will get the proportions off. What I really need to do is fix the proportions so I can work on the depth by shading it
@@yes_hello_how_are_you but thank you for the tips because it can help with other aspects of drawing and doing the rest of my OC
@@De_ogen i am aware of possible downsides of separating each feature and making them all 3d but I meant more in reference to just the shape of the head as a whole keeping the curve of the cheeks and face in mind helps me with feature placement Thanks tho! <3
@yes_hello_how_are_you sorry for the misunderstanding, yeah that is important and I often do it it is just normally I do it for smaller periods of time over a few days during school so yeah I sometimes overlook details like that because I have been so focused on other things
Try and move the eyes farther apart, don’t emphasize the nose bridge so much, and move the nose closer to the lips, which should be bigger as well. The lips generally end right before the middle of the eye. But a big thing would be to lower the eyes in general, to create a forehead
@viatrixxartel664 for the hair type, which is the same hair type as me. The whole forehead is covered by hair, and so I cut it back a bit because it would have covered the eyes but other than the part with lower eyes yes, I shortened the face and brought the lips up to fix it rounding out the face too. Thank you for the tips. I will remember them.
The nose is a bit high and the eyes are very close together
Thanks, yeah, I agree. I have been working on it
It's great
Move the eyes further apart, round the chin a little bit to make it look like a jaw, the nose is just a little to skinny and its high up. Guide lines are useless so just free hand a face. Other than that it's great! 👍🏼
@TraceHenkel thanks I will take these in mind, and I use guide lines to make sure I can keep it the right width bc I am drawing a large face, so I need to lessen inconsistencies. Normally I free hand
