A Midlife Motorcycle Story | Over 50? Watch this before buying your first motorcycle.
At 58 years of age I bought my first motorcycle and went on a two week road trip through Northern England. I took a few pretty pictures along the way.
Was this any of this good idea? Was buying a motorcycle and going travelling the answer to a midlife crisis?
Come along with me on the journey and find out, as I explore West Yorkshire, Northumberland, the Scottish Borders, the Lake District, the Peak District... taking in the beautiful English countryside while reflecting on my personal journey, my love of travel photography, and my new found passion for motorcycle touring.
I hope you find it as an inspiring adventure as I did!

My wife of 33 years suddenly died in 2018. I was lost, lonely and 51. Then I decided to get a bike and I have been riding ever since. It brings great joy to me in a sad world. Canada has a lot of space to explore on a motorcycle. I do not expect to run out of new locations to travel too.
In every way a brilliant and beautiful video. Some of the passes in the Lake District are stunning! We went there last year. Gorgeous.
This was nice to watch. Thank you for sharing! :) Started at 33.
Yo Mike, that was such a pleasantly engaging film, editing was spot on, you have a good eye for a shot. Remember the past, look to the future, live the moment. Peace from NZ. Ridelife
thank you for very heartwarming and inspirational video. I am from Sweden and I love the english countryside. Now I have a new dream, to buy a bike again and explore northern england. What a lovely adeventure! Thanks again!
Loved the video, very happy i found you, im also above 50 and i restart riding after almost 15 years without riding, is like starting from zero but im very happy with it :) Sub
Mike, I appreciate your video. I just turned 56 this year and I’m excited to buy a bike and do the same thing after many years of working kids in and out of college. I wanna have a little knee time. Thank you so much. This was a great inspiration and confirmation for me
Fantastic video ,thanks for your effort.
see guys, 125cc is no worse than a litre
My dear Mike, Thank you for the wonderful video and the insights you give us with it. Insights into thoughts that you share with us, but also the intentions behind what drives you. Worries, hardships, personal cuts, tasks that can only be experienced by calming down, being mindful and allowing new things to happen. Thank you for that! I can definitely see myself in everything you say. Everyone tries to deal with their "problems" somehow. Letting go and enjoying is something I've been trying to implement and really experience since I got my motorcycle license last year at the age of 56. There are many like us, only a few open up and that's a shame, but also understandable. Best wishes from Germany Appi
Great video. I didn't catch what you said your bike was.
I'm 55 and was suddenly forced into retirement. Recently got back from a month of motorbiking in Vietnam Including the beautiful HaGiang Loop. You've got to ride South Asia and enjoy the incredible culture shock and the stress relief of your hard earned money going much further. Protect your future riding and get armored gear my friend! All the Best riding to you!
My wife was 55 when she passed her bike test and bought a brand new Ducati monster 821. I had a Ducati Supersport at the time. We toured Europe within 2 months of her getting her license and the bike. Now, 6 years later, she has bought a new BMW S1000XR with 165 bhp to tour with me on my BMW R1250RS. Age does not matter, if you want something just do it, but don't pussyfoot around northern England, visit corsica, Italy, France, Spain and Germany, we do it all the time.
I am very much looking forward to hitting corsica this spring. Looks amazing, yep so many great places to explore look forward to it
Ride often, ride smart, ride sober, and ride long! 100 years from now your great grandkids won't remember your address or your bank balance, but they will remember you rode. Cheers from Austin TX
Could not agree more, many thanks 🙏
And thank you!! Long may you run, sir @@mikebestfilms
Beautiful video.
Hello from Spain, Mike Fantastic experience. Wellcome to the motorbike life. I´m 52, and yesterday I bought mi 6th motorbike, and my 2nd Himalayan. A new Royal Enfield Himalayan 450. Travel by bike is one of the most beautiful experiences, and even if you are a new friend in this bike world, you have been able to describe all the sensations very well. Fanstastic report, gorgeus photos. if you are thinking about a trip to Spain, let me know, and we can do it together. Congratulations Mike ✌
this is a slick video...great story. It felt good watching it. Gives me a few thoughts on what i want to do...during my break from work. I am 58. I struggled through my working life, barely holding on to some sort of work. Never succeeded at anything. Failed at almost everything... Here i am, wondering if i have enough saved, wondering what to do next... Your video entertained me sir. Thrilled me actually. You must have spent a lot of time putting things together - the footage you shot, the editing...the mixing with music. The narrative and the narration...i just enjoyed it. Thank you sir.
Thanks so much, I really appreciate that. Man I have failed spectacularly at so many things in my life my friend, I know it sounds trite but it's really part of the journey I think. There are many ways to make money I genuinely wish that I had thrown myself into this thing a lot earlier and just went for it. I chased security a lot in my life ironically to only find how easily that can all come appart. So might as well do the things we feel are worthwhile. Best of luck with things ✌️
I appreciate this video, as someone who is turning 26 soon I feel already falling behind in this day and age. It's reassuring to see that even over my lifetime later, there's plenty to feel life worth living for.
Oh yes. So many times in my life I have felt at a dead end only to find another great adventure right around the corner. Life is anything but a straight line, but that is fine 🙂. All the best mate! ✌️
I've been through some stuff too.. I'm 53 and back on the bike for the 1st time since a teenager.. Mid life crisis? Yeah, bring it on.. These old bones may feel the elements more than they once did, but it's totally worth it.. Ride on and enjoy..

This was a beutiful story ❤ You gotta make more videos!
@kihestad Many thanks indeed! More on the way, been a little slowed up by the winter! All the best with channel, being in London I am deeply envious of that garage of yours! Cheers mate ✌️
SO inspiring. Thank you.
Wow, it seems there are a lot of us that know on some level that riding a motorcycle is going to help bring us back to what’s important. I am also 58, recently had my life turned upside down and thought, I should learn to ride a motorcycle, I’ve always wanted to. I jumped in, took a course, passed, and now I’m anxiously awaiting spring when I will buy my bike and start to explore my beautiful province by the ocean. Here’s to the roads and being in the moment. Thank you for sharing your story. That is a scenic trip. I hope to do the same.
Very cool. Bravo
i need more your videos. it is perfect and inspring. Hello from Turkey. Thanks a lot
i dont know how to say, Mike, this is very great videos, i like how you explain, the tone so Wow. please inform me the microphone that you used on this video?
Thanks very much! I used a Rhode Procaster for over dubbing. Its a superb mic but it does require some kind of audio interface like a scarlett. you can't plug directly into a computer.
Great video. I identify, I’m 58, had a bit of a breakdown career/politics related, I think they would call it the mid-life crisis, the existential dread, what does it all mean? Maybe instead of reading Fydor I should fix up my old bike. That is a tall task, not something I have attempted before, maybe I buy something new (I’ve always wanted a new bike). I have safety concerns getting in something that old with a device I’m not familiar with. I know cars. Front fork fluid leakage, seems pretty important. Didn’t know when looking at a used bike - bike concern. Regardless, a car when I was 16 meant freedom, maybe getting on a bike is what I need.
There is nothing like the open road on a motorcycle you reminded me of my own journey with a motorcycle photography my first time a motorcycle i was just 6 years old and first big trip was with my father when i was 11 we travelled across India now I'm 51 and 50 countries later I'm and still looking for next big adventure keep riding brother it just keeps getting better and better and the photography is a great way to share with people and for your own memories.
Enjoyed the video and glimpse into your journey. Therapy on the road is a very good choice.
i was never allowed to buy a motorbike growing up, and to be honest i am more a car nut. However i always liked the look of the bmw100rs from the 70s/80s as well as the honda 80s Honda CB1100r. At 50 and with both my parents gone i took my test in Gibraltar/Uk and passed first time and bought a BMW 1200R within 2 years i had bought a BMW100rs, BMW r12nine T, but i wanted to experience more... i bought a 1939 Matchless model X, 1976 Moto Guzzi 850 Le mans, 1939 Triumph tiger T100,1937 Stevens LP5,Triumph bonneville,1974 Moto Guzzi police bike, and a Harley Davidson streetglide. With a friend we hired Streetglides in LA and rode to Palm springs on our way to the Grand canyon, Zion national park,Vegas, death Valley, Mammoth lakes , Yosemite national park, we rode into San francisco and even saw Clint Eastwood at his Mission ranch in Carmel, before riding down the Pacific coast highway back to LA. I am now 60 and my bikes and riding days are gone, but i tried to pack into those short years as much as i could and i was fortunate to come out without any injuries..I am thankful for my time on 2 wheels and i have fond memories.. but i still stop and look when a when a biker rides past and think.. maybe...................
Awesome! Thanks for the share!
❤ Beautiful video! Your editing skills are phenomenal. Is it a camera or cell footage?
Thanks very much indeed! Mostly shot on an insta 360x4 action camera or my Nikon Z7. ✌️
Newcastle is my local capital city
I too am starting my you tube journey with motorcycle filming no where near as good as this but i will have some sort of content
Same here,,very the same ,even 58 but i bought my teen years Honda Dax
Mike, nice to see you found the keys to happiness. Great job on the video! Happy trails!
I couldn’t figure out the bike he rides.

I also started riding at a later age, 52. And for me also after a loss and feeling a bit lost. Every time I ride the mind clears and the focus goes up, leaving me with a smile on my face and feeling lifted. Some say it’s a midlife crises, for me it’s therapy and landing on my feet again. Riding is freedom and feeling your surroundings and smelling the air you cut through.
Hi Mike. I am a 57-year-old Australian who got my learners last August. I also purchased a Honda CB500x. I love the thing! I am learning all the time and later this year, I am going to ride from Murray Bridge, South Australia to New Castle, N.S.W. A 3000 KM round trip. I loved your video and I have subbed. I was a keen photographer but things happen. You have made me want to pick up my EOS7D again, so thank you. B&W in my opinion is the best. And by the way, you have a great eye for framing the mood. Kudos to you! Take care and all the best.
Hate to say it but 58 is not 'mid life' friend...at the average male life expectancy of 79 years, 40 would be 'mid life'.
@@rickybobby6760 I plan on living to 120. Don't you? 😀
😅
This wasn't what I was expecting. I'm 51 and I keep thinking about motorcycling. Now I am going to be thinking about motorcycling in the UK! Great video!
54 year old from Poland. I have been riding a motorcycle since I was a teen. There is nothing better for worries and sadness than riding on unused roads through fields and forests
Awaiting the sequel. Beautiful 😊
On the way ;) been slowed a bit by the English winter but squirrelling away on another, thanks! ✌️
Beautiful video...beautiful England! Loved living and working in North Yorkshire for a while...life is moments!
Such a beautiful video ❤. I have done several shorter versions as I live in Yorkshire. I can’t wait until I can dedicate more time to do a decent length trip just like yours. Thank you for the opportunity to see this👍
Dear Mike! Why you only have one Movie her? What happend? Whould be great to see more of your adventures on motorbike!
@MajorAlb Many thanks indeed! More to come, working on the next one currently. Was a slowed up a bit with Christmas and the Bristish winter, but back to work now 😀. Thanks so much for the lovely feedback and please stay tuned for more ✌️
@@mikebestfilms Great news! All the BEST. We all can´t wait for next video and great photos!
Hi Mike! Gorgeous Video and photos! Great work. Love also your sayings in your video! I started again with motorbike in 2024 after a trip in January in Thailand 🇹🇭. I had a Scooter 🛵 on a small Island and this was breathtaking. Now I am 65 and so happy with the decision to start again with motorbike and scooter. This is freedom for me! And meditation during driving, because no other thoughts. because you just concentrate on driving and the surrounding nature! Have fun! Good luck 🍀 and save ride on all your trips! Greetings from Austria, Albert
Great video Mike, I'm 45 and thinking about getting into motorcycling so as you can imagine all my spare time is watching biking videos but yours was has fully sold it to me. If there was a way to promote biking to the masses, this is it! I'll be booking my CBT ASAP! I also love photography and can't wait to start making content like yours! thank you!
I am 70 and still love riding my motorbike
