Julius here, I'm a filmmaker, woodsman & conservationist, from the Netherlands, currently living in Ireland. On this channel, I intend to show and share mare passion for nature and the environment. These will be mainly informative mini-documentary-style videos on the topics of nature education and the environment, etc.

Today I’m visiting three forestry landowners in County Offaly, Ireland with Forester Manus Crowley. Their forests were originally planted as conventional spruce plantations, but the choice is now made to transform them into mixed permanent forests that produce high-quality sustainable timber & more.. with the management approaches of CCF (Continuous COver Forestry) instead of going with the conventional clear-felling management. Let’s learn all about this transformation process and why this choice has been made!?

Forest or Coal? ~Hambacher Forest at the front of Climate Change action

A special forest is still being cut to burn lots of Coal, despite Germany's intent of being a leader in mitigating climate change and switching over to renewable energy. The Hambacher Forest has become the front of climate change action. The center of a heated discussion whether the tide of fossil fuels should be turned. Can we quit this dirty Coal habit and save this ancient forest? Your suppo...
Great interview Mark. I’ve listening to you and reading your books since 2011. You’re a real inspiration.
I'm only 4 minutes in, and I think I'm going outside now... I've read his books, and I recommend them, as well as his lifestyle. Mark is a pioneer, and I hope the masses will have the courage to follow him (but I don't think they will).
I moved onboard my sailboat, my yearly cost of living is down to $3500, I can't be bothered having a job. All I do is my hobbies, sailing, fishing, online gaming, watching old movies and ride my CT 125 seeing stuff.
you on government support?
Not good. Unless you can't, you(and me) have a moral obligation to contribute, by our efforts, to society.
@@Kitiwake Good/bad = blanket statement. Only if your wellbeing is prioritised and taken care of first. For some, this may not happen/may not happen to the level they can then contribute outwards of themselves.
@@Kitiwake Your "society" let veterans, old men, fathers with children to sleep in the forest while sending funds to Ukraine and feminist governamental programs..

you should look for small oak saplings and put some kind of protection around it so they survive their youth long term you will get several benefits like -establishing a long living species -ground cover to long term transformation to woodland - acorns as food source for wildlife etc. but thats just if u want to interfere . like other commentors mentioned when shrubs and pioneer trees starting to inhabit they area the succession really pickes up speed but dont forget to manage your deer population ;)
I read "the moneyless man" as a young man and it genuinely changed my outlook on life.
Living away from technology
Mark Boyle, Roy Haynes and Amou Haji are the cheapskates in the world
Did he really just mention AI and this is from 4 years ago…
It is on my bucket list to make my way to Ireland to adventure after reading and re-reading The way home. Truly and inspiration and example for us all.
"Tree landowners" lol ❤
His books are excellent, and I re-read them every couple of years.
I have been discontent with the world we live in. I feel utterly trapped by excessive, brainless technology and a relentless economy. It's so inspiring that someone found a way out, and that we can all work to being connected again.
Technology is just a tool. It’s how we use it.
The entire cabin and his clothes are all technology. I think he means electronics.
Stove, wine, dishes ..
I keep losing you guys in my algorithm and it makes me sad

Good job!
What is the purpose of making woodland from grazing land. ??????
Goede film ,hartelijk bedankt.
Mr Silvan we as a species are very impatient, we think in seconds, minutes, hours, days weeks etc. Nature works in decades and centuries and geological time is in millenia , we really need to learn to sit back and take it all in , the natural world can heal itself if given space and time but unfortunately the same cant be said for us humans I fear.
Really interesting, keep up the good work Julius!
This rings very true with what the great John Seymour said in his brilliant book.
Where are you located geographically?
Again, brilliantly shot and produced factual content
Probably the best video on forest management I’ve seen. As a forester who spent the first 22 years of my career working in Northern Ireland, and since 2019 in Southern England (where I grew up), it’s so heartening to see the great strides and innovation continuing to take place in Irish Forestry. I’ve seen first hand all the challenges you refer to, particularly deer here in S England: it is imperative that the deer population in Ireland is not allowed to reach anywhere close to the densities we have in England. There are also challenges of markets for the more varied range of species, although we have a very good local market for large Douglas and larch. I also own a 20ha plantation in Co Antrim that I planted in 2001, so I still maintain a direct interest in what’s going on in Irish forestry. I will watch your future videos with avid interest- this one was a joy to watch: brilliant photography and superb presentation!

Mark 1.15 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Hebrews 11:6 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Jesus
Is he related to Susan Boyle?
Awesome, Mark is inspiring.
How it is different between moneyless and homeless ?
You can use permaculture principle of giving deer what they need in order to protect young shoots. For example - you could plant bunch of jerusalim artichoke around the young shoots and hopefully deer will eat artichoke. Damage to artichoke will produce hormones to stimulate growth. By the time seedling outgrows artichokes deep pressure won't bother it that much This works on small scale not sure if it's doable in example.
Permaculture has all the answers and its really the end goal even though many can't see it yet, theyre still too caught up trying to to squeeze short term profit out of the land rather than lay the framework for exponential growth for generations to come
they problem is a little bit more complex i think. starting with the climate, soil type and therefore a specific flora, intra and interspecific competion and relation, the amout of deer etc. imo
It may be the case in the future you’ll have to protect those seedlings another way other than culling. It’ll be a lot of work, but may be your only option. Deer are Insatiable.
Wait a minute.... *watches the hole series* Only just realise its the iron age roundhouse guy on the camera. Ach ye sneaky bugger!
Что он несёт?
Dude burns wood for s living and he thinks all of us need to do the same.
Another Wonderful British Lad.
and in ya 50/60s when got crappy health and dodgy knees ?
are you not using Miriaki method, the most successable and sustainable, forestry and regeneration known to man
Do you mean Miyawaki?
absolutely,are u going to use?
Such a bull shit ! Go to Central Africa and see how people leaves without electricity and internet!!!
I like Mark's life style of living.. It's very hard to live but it's good message to Money earners...
It’s a fairytale
so how did he buy his land if he gave up money?
What were the original natural predators on deer in ireland.... I'm assuming wolves.... maybe wildcats.... is the country looking at bringing them back, or are you going to rely only on hunting and culling? Seems a lot easier in the long run to rely on the natural apex predators.
I agree, but it will be hard to convice the public for reintroducing atm. First need to create more habitat and see an attitude change, esspecially among the farmers. In mainland europe it is working out, with the compensation being payed for lost livestock.
@@juliussilvan a very long term game. Thank you for your good work ❤️
What a great idea. Mimicking what nature does is always a good idea.
Bramble is a significant wildlife barrier in my regenerating forest/fields. I am from WA state, and Himalayan and evergreen blackberry are a curse. Most of my time spent managing the field is removing blackberry. There is a low growing native blackberry that I leave. Please don't let it take over your land if it isn't native to your area.
I agree. The Forest Preserve of Cook County (Chicago area) bought up farms to preserve. They left the farm fields to "fill in". The result is acres of buckthorn, honeysuckle and box elder - shit forest. Should have farmed it until they could plant it with natives such as oak, and viburnum. I'm sure volunteer conservation groups and scouts would have helped them. Or they could have worked to restore native prairie land grasses.
I can tell there aren't any goats on your place? I stripgrazed cattle with single strand on high pigtails, and let the little handful of goats roam the whole place. The goats picked up every bird-sown little blackberry start. Hi from Moses Lake.
@teamground0229 It is likely possible that those lower grade forests would naturally still develop into oak forests overtime? with a bit of patients
Pioneer species are always considered junk, but they’re not.
Smooth Gefixt ? The voice sounds the same. Excellent content, both.
Thanks man, Yes Julius here;)
10-15 years to get it? Not sure we and the planet have so much time. I don't think nature can do all the work by itself and without man's help, because only Yucatan asteroid caused more damage than us in last two centuries. Natural process must be speeded.
So, he'd agree with the globalists that population control is the answer? That people aren't supposed to live by subsistence because it's not good for the planet, and that global warming is upon us?
Aided of course by CO2 - nature's plant food
Interesting. The 2 highest quality trees he mentions are both endemic to British Columbia. Also the bark beetle!
Don't forget that "natural regeneration" doesn't mean simply getting rid of fields. Those open areas are vital natural habitats all on their own. The "natural" way of things is to have a blend of open and covered. Wild fires would burn hundreds of acres, or at least dozens, and from there grew up the grasslands. Forest is horrible ecosystem for millions of things, tiny little bugs and ephemeral plants. Even then, there are many types of forest, and the fact that you have trees around doesn't mean you have a healthy ecosystem. By not burning the land with controlled fires, mimicking what nature does, you've lost gobs of stuff most people don't even realize.
