Foley Automatic Saw Filer Model 387 test run
Просмотров 14 тыс.9 лет назад
This is video #1 of 2 of using this machine on this saw plate. Testing my saw filer after rehabbing and repairs. This test was done on a rough saw plate with a file that was pretty well used up. I'd expect even better results with a fresher file. This machine received a lot of TLC to get it in useable condition, but I believe it will be a great performer. Hi, my name is Greg, owner of Rusthunter.com and WoodworkersZone.com. After several years of disuse by the previous owner, I've been sourcing parts and getting help from several sawguys online, trying to revive this Foley Model 61 Automatic Saw Filer. I rewired the switch, lamp, and motor, lubed it up and freed up a few mechanisms. Now, it's time let the old girl take a lap on an old saw that w...

I have a practically new one of those. Cool
Dang Man..... CLEAN the saw First......
Best to set the saw before sharpening, but you were learning then.
I just saw one of these on Craigslist and didn’t know what it was… so I came to RUclips to see if I could find out.. and sure enough!
That was awesome! I'm buying a retoother and grinder and apower setter soon ...just pumped about this!
Thanks, but I have all I'll need. If you want to leave a comment with your contact info, maybe someone else would be interested.
Do you not have to run it through the model 352 power setter that i see in video is mounted just below your retoother?
It depends on your goal. Rip, definitely. Crosscut, usually. If I'm doing a fine toothed dovetail saw, then I won't always. Same with a gents saw or a flush cut saw. Sometimes, I'll just stone the sides of the teeth of those to eliminate burrs. Then, there's always the fact that I like to handset most of my coarser crosscut saws. Just a preference.
@@proudpoppag thanks very much, i have a set of these foleys but missing files and other attachments pieces and parts, want to sell all cheap 100 bucks pick up in wisconsin. I will see if i can add or pm you some pictures. Thanks
How thick of a piece of annealed steel will this cut? I just acquired one that runs. This would be great for saw spines on knives I make.
Best video I have seen yet. Thanks
Where to buy this machine? Foley machine 387 I'm from the philippines.
Where to buy this banso machine? How much would it be?
Sir i need foley bandsaw wer Buy rhis machine
Is this still for sale?
I have one of these gizmos!
I'm 61 years old been in construction most of my life, in some way shape or form... I have never seen one of these Badass sharpeners before, in fact I didn't even know what it was, except I knew it was a very special, intricate equipment... thanks for the video.!!!
My foster dad owned and operated the same kind of machine in the 80s
Anyone want to buy one. I have a Model 200 filer, a Retoother and a Folley Anvil tooth setter I will sell. I will see your reply and can work on connecting after that.
I have one that I will sell. I also have the Model 200 sharpener and the tooth setter. Both the retoother and filer have 1/3HP motors which are toast. Replacement motors by Dayton are around $120.00 a piece. If anyone is interested, please reply and we might be able to get together.
Do you still have these? Where located?
@@trevordecker4872 Sorry I took so long to reply. Out of town for the winter, but yes, I still have all three pieces and like I mentioned the motors that drive the retoother and sharpener are not good. The start windings have shorted. All three pieces are mounted on a roll around table which I want to keep, but if someone wanted, they could mount the retoother and shapener in line with one motor and use a v belt to drive each one at a time or you could buy a motor for each like the Dayton motors I looked up. We live close to the northest corner of Indianapolis, Indiana.
How much is it please
Guys, I have a F24 and am looking for some information, cant find any other way to contact you but through this. Would like to speak with yall about it. Im restoring it.
Where can I get one to buy
You'll need to search Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and also check out auctions and estate sales in your area. They aren't sold new anymore.
I have one I would sell
The music was nothing but a distraction that ruins enjoying the video. Consider losing it.
This is a machine from the past , no real market for it. Few handsaws are used anymore and those are considered throwaways when dull . I used one when I was young with my father in our saw shop , remember those times well love you dad
How much?
👍👍👍👍 I like
So all teeth go same way ?
For punching new teeth and sharpening, yes. During setting, they alternate but that is done with a separate machine, or by hand.
@@proudpoppag i think u have channel thats nothing to do with sharparing blades
I wonder if a metal shaper machine can be setup for retoothing and filing saws.
Does that need to now be put through the Foley 387 Refiler or is it good to saw with?
Yes. Still needs sharpening.
I'm going to pick up one of these for $200. Looks like you can get parts for it from the states eh? have you found any canadian suppliers? is your belt drive or friction wheel? thanks
Limited parts are available from SharpeningSupplies.com, but not much. Mostly, you'd have to source them from ebay or folks in one of the Foley Saw groups through facebook.
My dad and I have 1 complete Foley 387 and 2 for parts. Anyone interested in one of them let me know. 🙂
Where are you located?
ml perschon northern Illinois
In northern Illinois
I have 2 of the machines up for sale.
I need some how much
are the tongue cutter and the groove cutter the same size? i have a stanley 50 with a 1/4 tongue cutter and 1/4 plow cutter, but for a strange reason the tongue result narrower than the groove, with a resulting loose joint
Please put some oil on that blade..!!!
Just a reminder, this was a pitted, unsalvageable blade. Not worth saving really, but good for practice and a demo.
Great video, Thanks ,though so glad i have a volume control
How to inquere this foley belsaw filer or purchese
I work for Foley we haven't made a filter or a re-toother or setter since about 98 or 99 I think not sure on exact year. But once we ran out of parts we quit supporting them
How to purchase or inquire your automatic frame saw blade sharpening
The music is distracting, but the process you go through is very good. The instructions that go with the video is also very good.
Looks like it sharpened every other tooth. Might need to flip it and run it the otherway
Yup, that's how you sharpen crosscut saws. Every other tooth, then change to the opposite angle on the machine and do the remaining teeth. You don't flip the saw around. The machine is designed to work like that. Works perfectly. On rip saws, since they are cut at 90 deg, you hit every tooth in one pass.
Thanks for the video. I have had one of these for years along with the other Foley Belsaw tools but never took the time to learn to use it. Now that I'm retired I think it's time to get them out and see if I can make them work right.
Music sucks terrible Teacher.
This video is helpful! Thank you.
I had a sharping service back in the 1980 & 90’s. Over the years I sharpened well over 12,000 handsaws on the same Foley machine. Sharpens quite accurately if the saw blade is cleaned first allowing smooth feeding.
Good afternoon! and in case you want to sell the machine! Approximately how much would it be? Greetings .
Please, please don't torture us with music in your videos. This is unbelievably awful.
Great video brother, thanks for the info.
What is it's price
Percy Madon I don't have a price in mind, because I'd rather not sell either one. Again, it'd be an offer that I just couldnt refuse. I enjoy having them.
Sell it, I want it
I want to buy this machine or make one
Percy Madon I have a spare, but it'd be very difficult to talk me out of it. I'm in the Kansas City area, if you want to come by.
Awesome!
Awesome!!
estoy buscando una maquina foley mod 387
Pretty cool machine! Do you need to buy special files for it, or are they readily available? When sharpening saws manually you would normally need a variety of different sized files. Do you need a bunch of different files for this machine too?
It's been a while since you asked and no response so I'll jump in. It doesn't take special shaped files for most work. The standard 3 corner and cant files will fit into the holders and they match the necessary tooth profile. Foley sold files to do special jobs but for most of the saws that this machine would be used for you use the same files as you would hand filing.
@@OldSneelock Sorry I missed your reply. Thanks very much for the info. I'm still keeping my eyes open for one of these machines and have learned a bit more about them since posting my comment. I also found the manual online and it says it takes standard 6 inch saw files, most of which are available from Lee Valley. Cheers.
I have several in good shape if you’re interested
