I thought the story of Merle Haggard’s guitar was incredible but The Long Black Veil??🤯 Fan-f’ing-TASTIC! David Frizzell is the uncle, cousin, or friend-of-a-friend that everyone wants to sit next to or gather round at the close of a party or long day. I was fortunate enough to have known a few of these lovely folks in my 70yrs & their unique gift to tell a story that takes you with them is deep-seated in their DNA & (I swear) is hereditary. I know I always felt that I’d been sprinkled with fairy dust the morning after🪄😉 Excellent interview! TY👏

Isn't that an amazing story? I would be curious to know if Merle would have taken the same path had Lefty not given Merle that opportunity.

One thing’s for sure ~ that encounter sparked an unquenchable fire in Merle’s belly & soul. What a legacy🔥

As a dj for WGNC radio in Gastonia, NC I interviewed Mel at Crossroads Music Park in Kings Mountain. Photo RUclips Bob Bigger Gallery of Stars. We sat in his tour bus which I called The Borrowed Angel Express. He said, “Hey, that’s as good a name as any. I’ll have to have it painted on the bus when I get back to Nashville.” He took my photographer friend and me to Burger King in Shelby, NC and bought our lunch. I think WGNC helped launch his career. His record was Borrowed Angel the b side and House of Pride the a side. Fellow dj Ray Martin played Borrowed Angel. It caught on and we got a lot of requests for it. We had an fm station WGNC FM 11,100 watts. WKMT in Kings Mountain Jim ARP played Borrowed Angel. It generated so much popularity that 100,000 watts FM country station WSOC FM started airing it. Soon it charted. Then Mel’s next record single charted and he became very popular. I met him several times, sat in a car with him and talked a long time. A very, very nice and talented man. I had had had asong recorded by Randy Traywick later Travis and planned to present it to him Title I’ll Take Any Willing Woman. Mel would have done a great version of it.

Hero? Unbelievable? It is hard to believe he became so famous and influential, when he was a pediphile who raped a young girl while in Roswell, NM. He got convicted for statutory rape and onky served six months. It ruined that young girl’s life. He should have gone to prison.

One of the most influential country artist in history. In my top 5 . Many copycats Merle Haggard,Keith Whitney,John Anderson,Gene Watson,Johnny Rodriguez,Randy Travis etc. Good singers but not the original. I listen to Lefty 3 to 4 days a week. I have to get my fix.
