Taking a Chance on a Locked Chevrolet Matiz at Auction - Will It Pay Off?
Просмотров 472 месяца назад
For some unknown reason I thought it would be a good idea to bid on this Chevrolet Matiz at auction. I do have a back history with these but I think it was more like the challenge of the car being locked and with no history that seemed to appeal to me. Only time will tell if this will have a happy outcome.
Driving the low mileage Morris Marina 1800 from 1975

After two years waiting it was finally time for a proper road test of my 1975 Morris Marina 1800, since its not on plates yet, I have never driven it on the road before, so it was interesting to see if the car was as good as it looked. I has to be said that before I got it two years ago it was driven a couple of thousands kilometers in a short time, so I kind of figured it worked

    My Dad had several Dauphine when I was a young boy. My Dad's mother kept his one until the 80's. These cars had a particular smell in summer. The false leather from the seats, I guess? And this sound engine! During hollidays in the south of France, at my Grand Dad's home, at Mèze (he was the railways station master of the town, located on the Étang de Thau, near the city of Sète), I remember my Dad let me alone in the car (I was 4 or 5) while he was buying some fishing stuff for few minutes. South of France, end of the 60's, summer, just after the lunch = the whole city was on a nap. And me alone in the Dauphine. Taking my father's seat. Discovering the controls of the car around the steering wheel. And suddenly... What is it? Push it Bruno! The horn! What a wounderful sound! THE HORN! I never touch it again.... Even now, I prefer flashing the lights on the road! And my father never let me alone in a car after ... But the Renault Dauphine horn... what a wonderful sound!

    Having had a similar car (but only the 1.3 coupe version) I agree that it's a lovely colour, though I could never understand why BL called it "bracken" - to me it always looked orange! Your car is in exceptional condition: mine (also 1975) had rusty front wings by 1978 and only 23,000 miles! Despite that, it was a car I loved for its reliability and simplicity to service.

    Hi Ulrik you may not have noticed this video on RUclips showing how great the Marina could have been with modification. Please search `MORRIS MARINA MADNESS! LOST BRITISH LEYLAND CARS - Marina Marauder, BL Special Tuning AND MORE!' The car had much improved aerodynamics & a tuned 1.8 engine resulting in a top speed of 121 mph (194.7 km/h) complete with Overdrive.

    The Marina is another example of the Unions / Workers not being entirely to blame for the demise of BL. The car should have been offered with more sophisticated suspension (like the Hillman Avenger and later Cortinas). The 1940s Morris Minor suspension may have been just about adequate for `A' Series engined cars but not for the `B' series with the heavier engine and near 100 mph performance. The Marina Estate 1.8 would have probably sold well in France for example with sorted suspension; the French used to give English cars a `fair go', for instance the Montego Estate 2.0 Diesel sold quite well in France as did, of course, the classic Mini and 1100 / 1300 / 1300GT (ADO16). Edit: For a working Marina the 1.8 gearing wasn't too bad imo, with heavy toolboxes in the boot (and van rear leaf springs fitted because the standard springs tended to fail). I never heard of complaints about the gearing of the 1.8 in the Company I worked for as an apprentice although Overdrive would have been welcome on `A' roads & motorways I guess. For private use an overdrive was more necessary (a Triumph unit to match the Triumph gearbox) since the 1.8 single carb engine would, I believe, be able to pull a higher gear ratio for cruising at 60 - 70 mph with the car not too loaded. From memory the standard cars top speed of 95 mph - 152.9 km/h (no doubt over 100 mph - 161 km/h on the clock) was attained at around the engine's maximum power RPM of 5,100. So 70 mph (112.7 km/h) relates to 3,758 RPM, 60 mph (96.6 km/h) relates to 3,221 RPM, 50 mph (80.5 km/h) relates to 2,684 RPM. The engine's maximum torque occurs at 2,900 RPM. Dropping the revs by 500 RPM @ 70 mph (112.7 km/h) would still mean the engine operating at over the maximum torque RPM while power is still increasing with engine speed.

    Wow that is the same spec of Victor FD, with the 1.6 engine, bench front seat and manual gearbox with column change, that my dad had back in the early 70s in England when I was about 8-10. He got it to fit us all in when we became a four child family. Youngest child sat between mum and dad, the other three of us sat in the back (all four strapped in with child seatbelts in blue webbing bolted to the body of the car as mum & dad were very safety conscious). I loved the car at the time, though I didn’t realise it was such a low spec. Only difference to yours, other than steering wheel position, is that dad’s was dark blue.

    Lovely motor in very smart color combo with plenty of chrome that is so 1970s . The prop shaft center bearing on these can get noisy and if the gears have been forced the guide pins can wear creating further unwelcome noise. Keeping the trunions greased . I have owned my 40,000 miles from new 1973 1.8TC saloon for 30 years and it runs on 175R13 Good Year Grand Prix S tyres which improve the gearing ratio significantly however it is still noisy over 90kmh. Wider tyres like 185/70 R13 will help you keep a better grip on the road in significant cross winds

      Cant remember the size of the current tires, but they are modern replacements, I believe to be rather new, that tc of yours must have a pleasing sound, tcs where the most sold big engine here, but most have been butchered over the years due to low prices and the mgb owner looking for a replacement engine

      @Martindyna 2 месяца назад

      I believe the MGB engine is in a slightly higher state of tune (different cam & higher compression etc.) and has twin carburettors but yes both are `B' series and sound similar. The Marina was unfortunately never offered with Overdrive and it's not an easy job to install one although it can be done, it would be a Triumph unit from what I've read online (probably because the Marina gearbox is basically a Triumph design). A higher ratio rear axle would presumably be an easier route to more relaxed cruising although not as good as an Overdrive that gives you 2 more gears (can be engaged in 3rd & 4th) while retaining the original 1st & 2nd gears for acceleration from a stand or for climbing very steep hills.

    • @andrewwmacfadyen6958
      @andrewwmacfadyen6958 2 месяца назад

      Marina and Ital used Triumph gear box that wasn't up to the job. Marina TC used a B series in more or less the same state of tune as the MGB.

    • @Martindyna
      @Martindyna 2 месяца назад

      @@andrewwmacfadyen6958 Yes that's the impression I've got from comments about the gearbox although apparently not that bad if treated with care since someone got 200,000 miles out of his Marina 1.8 original engine and gearbox (but, unsurprisingly not original clutch).

    You know as a young man I hated these, I had a Fiat 125 at the time. looking back these all seemed to just rev way too high for the speed they were doing. I really enjoyed the virtual drive, so cool to put myself back in those days. I respect these cars now, I grew up with British cars, sorry but this Marina is not one of them. This why the Japanese car industry took the world over. I look forward to taking more virtual drives with you, good job on the video and editing.

    • @Martindyna
      @Martindyna 2 месяца назад

      A friend of my parents had a Fiat 125 and he absolutely loved it, forgiving it's rather poor fuel consumption. The Marina 1.8 isn't geared as badly as some, the top speed of 95 mph (152.89 km/h) is attained virtually bang on the engine's maximum power RPM, 5,100 IIRC.

  • @Martindyna
    @Martindyna 2 месяца назад

    Thanks very much Ulrik for uploading this superb video, it was certainly worth the wait !! It has gone straight to no. 1 spot for a Marina 1.8 drive on RUclips imo. Fantastic sound of the 1.8 B Series engine can be heard throughout the video but in particular when you overtake the Sunday driver 6:40 and when accelerating from a stand 10:20. I wonder if it's the original exhaust system, I guess that's unlikely but if it is after market it doesn't seem to be restricting the performance. The Marina Owners Club & Fast Marina Club will give you advice about fitting an Overdrive (like an MGB) if you're interested in that or the fitting of a higher final drive ratio axle differential. I expect you will leave it alone since the gearing isn't that bad for the journeys I expect you'll be doing in a Classic car. A Carburettor dome clean with methylated spirits to ensure fully floating movement (can be checked upside down against the spring) may improve engine smoothness and the choke fast idle could be increased a little. I would lubricate the ignition barrel by oiling the key and inserting in the barrel a few times then wipe it clean btw. N.B. Please be careful on corners (especially higher speed long corners) on wet / greasy roads, Marinas are notorious for understeer changing to oversteer / spinning off without much warning !! I got nervous when i saw the rain spots on the windscreen although you do i notice take care on corners in fairness.

      Luckily the tires are not original;-) I know the handling is not the best but these are familar roads and quite nice to drive , open straight roads are boring. I am a fair way from giving it full throttle, because that is a Quick route to a failing headgasket in my opinion on a car that has not been driven for a long time.

    Thank you for the memory. Your mother was right and Car and Driver agreed, calling the gear shift an egg on a coat hanger. True, on could sort of stir it around gently without moving into a gate. One quickly learned firm throws . My first Renault Dauohine was a used 3 speed. I needed a good economical car to got to work while I waited for a clutch plate and release bearing to arrive frim Conventry....first car was an 8 year old Jaguar XK-159 roadster, so that wait stretched to 6.5 months. While Dauphine was having brake shoes replaced, the mechanic used an pnuematic wrench to tightened the wheel bearing 2 days later thee bearng burned out and the wheel came off while driving to work. Second Renault was a Dauphine Gordini with a 4 speed gear box. Last a good number of years before I sold it. Had a lot of fun with this ideal urban/suburban runabout. Being a big young man I was able to lift and bump the front end into "impossible" parking spots... managed to raise some eyebrows in the process.

      @@MrUlrik9 Wasn't until the internet became available that I discovered exactly how rare the XK-150 roadster was. Sadly I had to sell it after moving to NYC. At current prices, it would be way out of my range. PS. Later acquired a R5, marketed as LeCar in US as commuter vehicle... Now that was truly versatile and fun to drive. Dad had two Renault's, R8 and R10, Sister had an R10.... Enjoyed your video very much, thank you.

      @@MrUlrik9 Sadly I have no photographs of either. Lost my whole collection of family photos to a winter burst water line in 77. But much thanks for your consideration. Very nice to chat about the autos we've had and the memories evoked. Let me add another item. Now a days one rarely sees private car blown out tire carcasses along the road side thanks to vastly improved tire tech. Sometimes one comes across a truck tire. But in the 50s and 60s such sight were not uncommon. Dad's 1960 Peugeot 304 had Michelin X steel belted radials as standard, not so with the Renault's. I was running on whatever was on the used Dauphines I bought as a cash strapped youth focused on the XK repairs. Rarely mentioned are the 3 lug wheels on the French cars with heavy boat like washers fitted to the wheel groove. After numerous flat tires I became a speed wizard at Dauphine tire changing to the surprise of my buddies, 3 versus 5 made the difference.
