Adyashanti: Q&A—experiment with questioner on finding a self—returning to absolute subjectivity
excerpted from "Everyday Oneness": adyashanti.opengatesangha.org/store/media/audio-downloads/everyday-oneness-213
"What you are is the most subjective thing. So all you're doing is backing up into subjectivity...So that's the direction. That's where you're going. So I can't be a thought...because there's always that mysterious little seer...and it's always more subjective. This is a returning to absolute subjectivity...When you follow it back, you're not defining yourself as an object...
In a certain sense, it's very scientific, simple observation. But you get back to the seer, and you realize there's only seeing. There's not a seer...You feel and sense that absolute subjectivity: awareness...

This is interesting: "Now this doesn't mean you won't do your work as an environmentalist. You will probably still be doing your work as an environmentalist...You will probably be inspired to do it. But it's very different, isn't it? You are doing from an inspired place that's not divided, not in argument with what is, but you are actually coming from a place of inspiration, a place of beauty. You can just come from a place of beauty, from a place of inspiration." What is beauty, only what we decide to label beautiful..? And why would she continue to do the work as environmentalist when she can longer she the problems she is solving as "bad things to be solved"?

I feel bad for anyone who is taking these exchanges to indicate that someone is near to "awakening." Having attended many of his meetings long ago, gone through my own life-changing shift, known many teachers, and heard hundreds of stories of ordinary people experiencing a fundamental shift of consciousness (and guided many people afterward), I have never seen any evidence that the great shift is preceded by this emotional drama and fear of "psychological death" which they then have to sort of "choose" to face or not. This is absolutely not a hallmark of awakening. There is no mechanism or dynamic by which you are sort of faced with entering "the truth" or not. Usually the biggest shift someone will undergo (which we might call a satori) is entirely unexpected. The people who undergo it do not feel they are "dying" nor are they tearful, afraid, shaky or melodramatic like so many of these seekers who dialogue with Adya. It's nice that he tells them to relax (that's generally a safe piece of generic advice) but why he indulges this kind of delusion is beyond me. No Zen teacher (his former tradition) would see this kind of emotional fear as a great sign of impending Satori. It would be seen as a heavy mental delusion, similar to if someone was very excited because they thought awakening would give them superpowers. It's not a hallmark of a advanced seeker --- it's a hallmark of people heavy with confusion. I have known many advanced seekers and they are quite peaceful and clear minded. It seems to me that Adya has created an environment or a teaching narrative where any or all heavy, negative emotions are likely to be falsely spiritualized and seen as signs of an ongoing "ego death" -- a mistaken notion that simultaneously frightens people but also allows them to put a spiritual slant on their heavy neuroticism and nihilistic misunderstandings about consciousness and awakening. I really feel bad for anyone who hears this and thinks this woman is on the brink of the great satori. Having been familiar with this community I can tell you that's really not the case. There is a huge amount of psychological issues that are not understood but are spiritualized with a gentle pat on the shoulder and a kiss on the forehead from Adya.

Oh look he came back to the Self 😂 though he said there wasn’t one. Adya did not Self-Realize without seeking enlightenment or the truth. If one truly gave up on the search, one would not be listening to any of this. And that would be unfortunate and misleading. It’s misleading to put that out as a generic true message. But at the same time we do have to destroy the false separate self to discover the true Self. I hope everyone listening realizes this was not a complete process of seeing. It was a good start.

I find the question about the self to be an intellectual trap for the mind. I'm not sure how wise it is to say there is no self. For me, it makes more sense to say there IS a self and it's the Self you haven't experienced yet. It's the no-self. The self that isn't you. But it's definitely something one can experience AS your true self.
