Orpheus just wanted to write a song, the wife dying part was a failed side-quest he didn't have the attention span for. But he tried to fix it with a deadline. tried...

Hadestown's Orpheus was considered unrelatable before they made Reeve into this naive incarnation of the character. Previously Orpheus was acted out more like a hearthrob, so he appeared like a douchebag and an asshole. So this neurodivergent thing made him naive, lovable, and relatable, and inevitably contributed to the show's more mainstream success. Subsequent actors who took on Orpheus' role varied the interpretation, but they held onto this frame. But if you watch all of them, you will really notice that the ones that acted more like a hearthrob became less preferred than the ones with more naivette.

When I went to go see Hadestown on Broadway, I spent a good chunk of the musical just silently going "I do that!!!" at Orpheus. During intermission, my mom told me that she thought Orpheus was definitely Autistic because she could very easily see me doing a lot of the things that he does. Turns out that Reeve Carney actually has diagnosed ADHD and used that to help inform the way he plays Orpheus. Maybe not strictly Autistic Orpheus, but definitely not NT Orpheus. _Every single thing_ about this character makes me feel so incredibly seen, even down to the specific actor that has played him on Broadway since it first opened. This role is why I started thinking I could actually play an instrument, and it's why I started trying to learn guitar back in 2021. If Reeve Carney could learn a whole entire instrument and be a successful actor while having ADHD, then maybe there's hope for me even with my ADHD/Autism diagnosis double-feature.

Reeve Carney himself actually confirmed in an interview that Orpheus is autistic. So, you’d best be careful or you might end up offending a lot of neurodivergent individuals. Oh wait, you already have.

Why can't both be true? I agree that Orpheus in the original myth in an archetype, and I agree that in a musical adaptation of the myth he needs a justification for his actions at the end to be believable. Why can't that justification be that he's autistic?

As an autistic person I am a bit offended that people are trying to make autism “cute” and “quirky”. It actually pisses me off so much. And it’s always this community (among others) that do this kind of thing. It’s already frustrating enough to see so many people faking the disorder and /or saying they wish they had autism. I just wish people would stop romanticizing autism along with other disorders such as adhd and did. I’ve said my piece and maybe some people will come argue because they think its not a big deal. Or maybe they want to argue that it’s just a joke. Maybe I’m overreacting, but this still made me upset. I doubt many people will see this, but I just needed to rant about this.

As an Autistic person who felt deeply seen when I saw how Orpheus was portrayed in Hadestown, that's completely valid. I'd rather be romanticized than demonized, but like... that's a shitty choice to have to make to start with! Hopefully one day all types of neurodivergence will just be A Thing That Exists instead of something that gets either demonized by gross people or romanticized as just "UwU QuIrKy!!!" by folks who don't know better.
