Crosby Garrett, N Gauge Model Railway
США
Добавлен 26 авг 2018
Crosby Garrett N Gauge Model Railway is based on the real location on the Settle & Carlise Railway Line. The model will be set in the late 1940's/50's. In the age of Steam. I designed the layout when I was 15 (1995), long before the ease of internet for research was available! Unfortunately at the time I didn't have the funds or space to build the railway, but I had the time to plan it out. When I was old enough to drive I went and did a location shoot to get photos for the model. (2001) This can now easily be done with Google Maps!! Although getting down into culverts to get photos can't be done. In 2018 I had the space and money to start the build. My goal has always been to build a layout that has the potential to be shown at shows, or for the most part, that I can enjoy with my family.

Thanks for the video. Can I ask if you could cut the background music while you're talking please! It's very difficult to listen to what you're saying! Thanks.
Thanks for the feedback. I won't cut the background music, but I'll look to make an adjustment in future video's.
Hi Craig the layout is coming along nicely with you keep adding details, there are what brings a layout to like! Having the close connections with the Settle Carlisle I can relate to the architecture of the station and structures and the detail that you have achieved with the laser cutter models is amazing! Looking forward to seeing the finished builds and how you go about painting them! Cheers Gary
Cheers Garry. Yeah I'm pretty stoked with the level of details. I guess I'm just trying to show how much detail you can actually get on a N Gauge layout, so long as you have the tools and patience! I'm also trying to figure out what is possible!! Like my pallet on my community post... Craig.
Hi. This looks amazing. I have been trying to get something that looks this good in o scale using various papers and card. Where do you source the laser board?
Depends where you are. If you are in the US you can get it from: encompass-media.salesvu.com if you are in the UK or Europe. hobarts.com Search Laserboard. Hope this helps. Craig.
That's a great looking viaduct, I'm planning a curved viaduct on my 009-gauge layout im planning. I'm not sure how im going to approach it yet. I guess time will tell if I can crack it. Great video... Cheers James 🙂👍
Well let me know if you have any questions when you come to it. I was planning on scratch building, but the level of detail I was wanting was probably going to be a little hard!! But with the laser, it's become much easier. Cheers Craig.
@CGngauge Thank you. It will probably be a scratch build once I get my head around exactly where it's going and how I'm going to tackle it. My grandson(12) is also building a 009-layout and has made a great start on it. He's posting updates of it on his Dylington Model Railway channel with a new update coming soon. We've jumped on board so we can follow your progress... Cheers James 🙂
Thank you for subscribing. I've just done the same for your Grandson's channel.
@@CGngauge Thank you, it's really appreciated, I hope you enjoy his 009-layout build, and maybe some of his stop-motion animation videos filmed on our layout...cheers James 🙂👍
Hi Craig Great update, you really have got the laser cutting bug...lol, wait until you start with 3D printing...lol. Looking forward to see the construction videos. Thanks
Thanks Peter. 3D printing... I think that will be a 2025 thing, once I've done the ends that need to be completed. I think the 3D printing will be more for really small details.. I do have my eye one one!! Craig
Hi Craig - What a briliant update mate. The detail you can create with a laser cutter is truly mindblowing. Wish I had you as a neighbour so you could show me how to work with a laser cutter but I know my limits. All my buildings although scratchbuilt, will be using Scalescenes. But even with Scalescenes I really struggle since my illness. So I am extremely excited and looking forward to watching your updates and how you go about making those wonderful buildings, putting them together and finally painting them. All the best Chris
@@Chris-BognorRegis thanks Chris. I’ve watched Michael of Chandwell use the Scalescenes, and his buildings are impressive. His fine work and cutting is good. But with the laser you just get a much crisper finer edge, which I believe will make it more realistic. The art will really be in the painting and weathering!! If you were a neighbour you’d be welcome to come and use chap. More than happy show you how it’s done. As mentioned in the video, I’ll cover off the designs in Inkscape as I get to the real builds of the station and viaduct.. Cheers. Craig
Wow, the station and the bridge will look incredible once they are painted, this was very interesting and enjoyable.
I hope so!! I'll be painting it all, prior to full fit. Should be fun! Looking forward to doing both of them.
Hi Craig, nice work with that laser cutter it looks great. Nat🚂👍
Thanks Nat, it's a work in progress. But, looking forward to seeing what else I can create with it.
Craig, hats off to you for learning a new technology - the lasar cutter! I'm impressed. - MR
Thank you MR. It's been fun to learn and get my head around it.
I get how the laser cuts the parts, but how does it engrave the surface texture?
Less power or speed.. You can control 2 things. Power and Speed. Depending on the thickness of the material depends on how it will cut. Engraving is just cutting with less power/speed basically.. Eg. The 0.89mm Laserboard requires 85power @ 10mm speed to cut.On my 10w machine. So if I want to Engrave I drop it down to 40 power and 40mm speed. But, if I have to cut within and engraved area, I engraved first, the card is thinner so you then have to take that into account and change the cut power down from 80/10 to 50/30 , which is what I did for the toilet vent on the little building in the video. When first setting up it is a good idea to do a Speed/power matrix and test it for all materials you are going to use. (For me it's just laserboard, varying thicknesses.) This will show you the settings you need to get the results you are after. I also took those settings and used in a real life model, parts of the building to figure out the best settings and look I wanted. Depending on what it is cutting out you can offset the cut so instead of cutting on the line, you can say cut 0.1mm in. Once you get your head around it, it helps with the planning and drawing of the items. I have found. Hope that helps.
The stone work is exceptional! My laser cutter is still in its box… I haven’t had a minute to set it up! Outstanding work!
I couldn't wait to get it out and start cutting and figuring how I was going to use it.. Now II just can't stop think what else can I make and do!! I'm really thinking about the tiles on the roof and how to get them layered.... I have an idea..
The stonework looks great, did you design it yourself?
@@E_Platypus_Unum no I found a pattern and tweak for my needs
lovely
Craig, I'm very impressed by the extent pf the detail you've added in N scale. And I'll look forward to seeing progress on the two ends!
Thank you. Aiming for high details in the layout.. To show you can get it at such as small scale..
Found it. 😂 Added to watch later, and actually found a load more of very good content that I'd not watched. Thank you sir 🎉
Hi Craig Its looking good and all progress is good. Personally I like to see how people build things or do scenics, sometimes there are slightly different ways of doing things which just might be better. Good luck with the Laser Cutter, although I don't have one, I've heard they need some sort of extraction of the fumes to the outside air. Not sure how that would work with a closed (?) room. Anyway all good stuff. Thanks for the update.
Hey Peter, Thanks for the feedback. I'll add how to video's to my list! There seems to be a few that would like to see more detail, so I'll go back and do them. :) As for the Laser, well yes I believe you do need to vent, however most people that seem to be using them are making things out of thick plywood and other materials.. When you look at what I will be cutting 0.25mm or 0.5mm Laserboard... It's very thin and I'd imagine, I have no evidence of this, but I think fumes will be limited... However, with the room I'm in I could put a 3" hole in the wall which goes into the attic the other side, or continue the vent out to the underside of the eves.. But.. we shall see as and when I get it I will work that little issue out. :) Craig
Fantastic layout build...... very inspiring
Thank you. I'm glad it inspires you. :)
Such a wonderful layout! This suits N gauge so well and the colours of everything look so good! I still love the undulations in the landscape!
Thank you Richard. I'm happy with the centre 3 boards and how natural they look.. The bridge board should be relatively natural, but the viaduct isn't as much as I would like as I ran out of space... I think I would need another board between the station board and viaduct to make how I would like... (But that's me being picky!)
@@CGngauge I know what you mean! There is never enough space 😂
Yes please to how you have done things on the layout, I find them useful. I also follow Michael on Chandwell.
Noted! Michael is really good if you model using card. But also just fun to watch and listen.
Great update! The concrete bin by the P'way hut is a ballast bin for stone chippings that the P'way men used to pack into voids under the tracks on their section to keep the rails level.
Thanks Steve, that helps. This is what I thought it would be for... Once I've painted it I'll fill with spare ballast!! Good to know why they had it too.
I'm always curious about a model of an exact location. Have you come across anything yet that is impossible to replicate?
Unfortunately due to space limitations I can't do the viaduct at the end exactly as it is.. But from the end of the station to the other side of the good shed everything can be replicated.. With some minor tweaks. The stream that flows under I have bought just off the shelf items rather than make the entrance and exit's myself. The bridge plans I got from Network Rail, so I could copy that exact. All the other buildings I have plans in books. (Except the Plater's hut and line side. Some guess work went into one and the other I had to go to site to get the measurements from a building that is still there but.. slowly falling down!! The Signal box I will kit bash as the one in the kit is larger than the one on site.. Or I might build from scratch and use parts of the kits.. The arm signals at the end of the station and next to the signal box I have changed one to vertical the other might still make it an arm signal... but it wont be operable.. Or I could just put a straight one in... I'd like to get working ground signals. but as they are so small in N... I'm still looking and hoping someone will make them as the tech with LED's is there.. The point rodding is do-able and hope to do that, although it will be very tricky! I would say. as it's a simple location, everything can be pretty much replicated. But I'm having to go off old records and photos as there is very little there now.
@@CGngauge Well, I take my hat off for the scratch building. That is not something I could attempt. Some viaducts are just too long or too tall to replicate. We have one 2 abandoned ones round here it would be impossible to attempt. The steel has gone but the stone pillars are mostly in place. They are just enormous. Enjoying the channel and the build. Thanks for showing.
presumably the pit near the hut is just a ballast storage bin.
That's what I was thinking... but wasn't sure. There were remains of it when I visited the site.. but it was just that remains.. And I don't have any photo evidence that tells me otherwise. Thank you for your thoughts on it.
Hi Craig Small steps all get you further on, good progress. Thanks
Thanks 👍
Nice
Thanks
Looking good
Thanks 👍
Hi Craig Its looking good, the cattle dock certainly looks the part, good luck with the Viaducts etc. Thanks
Thanks Peter... Yeah the Viaduct is going to be fun.. As I have to build it all on the layout, I didn't design it as a stand alone section that drops onto the layout... (Didn't know I could when I design the thing....) I have a rough idea on how I will go about it.. I'm actually temped to build it.. but that's because I'm procrastinating finishing the other boards!! haha...
Very nice progress. I'm more partial to lighter fascia, but I bet it will look great with the curtains mounted!
We shall see. :) I've done a mock up and I like it.. looking forward to getting the curtain and installing though.
well, n gauge is to small for me so i have made the switch to oo for now, i am still keeping all my stock and track though, i really do find it amazing how people can work in such a small scale
Yeah it can be a little fiddly, but that's part of the challenge.. to make something look realistic but be so small. Hope you enjoy OO.
the black fascia works. good terrain shaping. nice update!
Thank you. :)
coming along nicely.
Thanks Stuart
nice update and nice to see the loco running :)
Yes, it was nice to get a train moving again!! Just have to get the other two loco's to work! and maybe have one in each direction!! :)
Looks cool
Thank you.
