I bought Century Wood in 2008 and I’ve always taken photos and videos to document what I’ve done. My blog at www.centurywood.uk and this RUclips channel let me share some of that with you. I also record my visits to woodlands elsewhere in Britain and further afield.
YW03 The first year in your woodland
This is the third of a series of videos for people wanting to own a woodland. It’s aimed at prospective buyers but some of the material will be relevant for existing owners too.

Now we come to some Do's and Don'ts about the first year of owning your woodland.

Clearing a woodland ride

This video shows reopening one of the woodland tracks in Century Wood in Shropshire that had become overgrown. I do before and after walkthroughs to show the dramatic improvement after only a couple of hours work. In May 2022, I walk from the busy crossroads into Walden Woods and to the site of Thoreau's cabin, where he lived for 2 years, 2 months, and 2 days from July 1845. I then look at the wildlife and views of the pond and the forest. Felling winter firewood, at Century Wood, Shropshire

I'm cutting down hazel, wych elm and ash trees for firewood, as I clear the edge of a woodland ride at Century Wood to let in more light and provide more varied habitats. I use the wood tractor, trolley, and chainsaw, and bring the logs back to the drying barn to season. A snow walk through Dunham Massey

After the snow fall at the end of November 2021 I walked around the National Trust's Dunham Massey estate in Cheshire, mostly in the oak woodland of the deer park. We see fallen and decaying trees, fallow deer, the old brick slaughterhouse tower, ducks in the moat in front of the House. A quick tour of the Drying Barn I built at Century Wood in 2018 and then photos of how I designed and built it myself with basic tools. It's fascinating how the word deer came from the Old English word deor and yet deor referred to any wild beast while heorot, which is the Old English root of hart, was the word for a cervid, mostly the red hart. By red hart, I mean a red "deer" regardless of age or gender. By cervid, I mean a "deer." Do you think so?

Thanks! The cabin is 5x5m. There is a composting toilet shed built in 2009 and still working well.
only thing wrong is the stihl saw!
Very impressive job and well produced and informative video. Nice one. "That was a pheasant" made me jump as I'd assumed it was one in the garden here (full of the daft things at the moment).
Got to feel sorry for those trees. Imagine watching that thing coming for you, rooted to the spot. Run, little trees , run!
