    I think more DMs need to impress upon their players "We are starting at level one... so your character is a talented amateur. Literally 1 level above being a nobody." Also run a game starting at level 10 and tell your players they can be all the legendary they want, it helps get the "I'm the best there is" out of their system so they can appreciate playing a nobody better

    I think there is a misunderstanding with the "DM Crisis". Having DM'd for 12 years now, i can tell you that sure 3.5 is bigger, but that size is based on a foundation of sourcebooks. 5e promises that size to players, while masking that the ruleset just doesnt support that. I have DM'd for MANY players, most of them with me as their first, and some have an expectation thanks to exposure to matt mercer and the other celebrity dnd shows. The amount of work that 5e is asking of a DM to meet those expectations is far far greater than that of 3.5. I believe this is mostly, whether they know it exists or not, 5e does not offer the same type of customization that 3.5 does, and so they ask for more items, more power, when the rulebook specifically makes that harder for the DM to provide. Simultaneously, the passages often suggest "working with your DM and asking your dm". If the DM says no all the time to a new player, then you set the precedent that DMs cant be worked with. I think a good example of this is the XGE magic item price rules. a rare item should not vary in power enough from its tier, if its tier can be ranged as 2d10x1000. A player should not be asking me why this sword of warning rolled 9k, and this ring of protection rolled 3k. One player bringing this up, because its been multiple players who have, accused me of making up rules. Oh their disbelief when i say the dmg lists no prices. This lead me to hard code my very own prices for every. single. item. Work on me that had previous editions had taken off of my plate. So now i have my own reference point to base my own games off of, based on how powerful i thought they were, which will differ greatly from table to table as the players move on and play new DMs. One of these players then questioned the motive behind me giving out gold, stating the amount was arbitrary and the meaning purposeless. In reality, and i had not realized it at the time, he was pointing out a huge flaw in the ruleset. But like i was the one who wrote the rules, forcing me to create my own.

    • @PorcinisMushRoom
      @PorcinisMushRoom 26 дней назад

      @@dungeondragon3580 being a dm definitely comes with a lot of challenges. As you already stated, there are flaws with 5e, just as there are with other ttrpgs. I've also created my own homebrew rule sets for pricing, enchanting, and alchemy. 5e certainly lacks flavor in these categories. Ultimately, however, I don't mind too much as I enjoy the process of building homebrew rules and systems with my players who often help me edit mechanics. Allowing players to take part in the process of creating homebrew has always been beneficial at my table. Participation has made my group feel included and they enjoy creating alongside me. I still feel that 5e has streamlined rules in many other ways which works quite nicely for streaming our campaign on Twitch, my primary purpose for using the system. Anyways, thanks so much for sharing your thoughts here. It was fun reading your post and hearing your insights and experiences.

      @@PorcinisMushRoom You're absolutely welcome! Im always glad to have a creator engage in my opinions, haha I think that we are lucky, to have players such as we do, and for our players to have DMs such as we. My brother has been playing with me for about a 3rd of my career, and over the last two years i have rotated about 35 players. I do pick their brains alot too, find out what part of the game they engage with the best, get something ready that will personally fit their character or what i think they would really enjoy. But thats inheirent of every game system. The difficulty i think comes in finding the ways to do so in 5e. I have a vast skillset i have developed over 12 years. New players dont have that, and i think, at the very least, rules that arent counter-intuitive, such as magic item prices that can vary more than 25k, would help new players get to those conclusions and develop those skillset. Im not to say any edition of the rules is perfect, but for example in 3.5, and class had a book with deep prestige class, lore, rituals, etc, giving a player something to shoot for, or a a plan to go on. The DM did not have to do this extra work, it was fun the player could explore on their own. Not a single one of these players has wanted to DM. and i do ask, because i think thats part of understanding their engagement of the game. And also i would like to play once, lol. My brother, though i have taught him how, says a game he runs after seeing how much work i have to do to make it work would just not be as fun, because he simply put, doesnt want to do that much work. Like look at some of the adventure books. DOTTM has so many holes and gaps, even an experienced DM as i was, was saying "Why am i using a module if i still have to do this much work?". The amount you have to poof into existence ruins the illusion that, really, its all made up. A slight tangent relative to that last line: My brother also said some things before, like "Wait that item was homebrew?" that launched a discussion at the table. This group in particular had come to the conclusion on their own that if they want something, they have to ask me to "make it up for them" and my brother agreed with the table's sentiment and echoed "Yea i think its less fun to have an item just appirate instead of having a story i can share with another group." And i liked that, because i've had alot of players, i like the idea of them being able to share their accomplishments and journeys and relate to them. He said "Sometimes its hard to talk to others about their games because their DM gave them some incredibly OP made up item." Meanwhile, he said that while his character had a rod of rulership attuned that drider's specifically have disadvantage too. A situation im not sure how many players could relate, lol

      @@dungeondragon3580 Well I hope you get a chance to play as a player! It is nice to have a break every once and a while. And I also find that being player in another DM's game is a good learning experience. It give us that much needed insight into how to introduce new ideas or see from other's perspectives. It would certainly be better had 5e created an encyclopedia of items with their values. It's a shame that they neglected that. It leaves us all scrambling to make sense of how to appraise all these op items/weapons. And of course! I'm so happy to have people to engage with on my videos. I've been working diligently to create a safe space for people to gather and discuss our passion for dnd and gaming. If you are ever in need of a good game to listen in to, check out my Doors to Divinity playlist. Our presentation does improve the further you get in the series. It's a forever campaign set in the world of Oania. We're only in Chapter 2 so far, so the it's still early on, but all of the lore and the current campaign's multiverse was created from our last 3-year campaign. AI can definitely be used to help new users get involved or get people who cannot get into groups but it won't replace a DM just like playing with Bots does not completely replace playing with IRL friends in other games currently. Bots make it so you CAN experience game content in a solo or more secured setting but from experience it's still not the same. It will be a useful tool if implemented well and it will inevitably be misused to harm some people experiences with DnD but that happens in all walks of life eh?
