Any chance of doing a video on the Bass VI ? If you’ve already done one apologies
I have found boiling your strings makes the core brittle. You can wash strings in the sink, with just Hot Water (5cm). and a tiny bit of dishwashing liquid. Take off one string at a time, soak for a minute or 2 - scrub up and down with steel wool/scourer a few times thoroughly, dry off, put on. Works best with stainless steel strings. Theyll come back to about 80-90% new sounding , depending on how well you scrubbed them. I get about 2 years out of a set of a Dingwall stainless 6 set.
Scott’s top 5 Basses 10:31 Jazz Bass 17:00 Precision Bass 17:46 Modern Active 5 String 34:08 Fretless 46:12 Something weird (Short Scale Hollow Body) Ian’s top 5 Basses 12:49 P-Bass w/Flats 15:13 P-Bass w/Rounds 23:49 5 String (technically his 4th) 29:32 Short Scale 30” Hollow Body bass 40:47 Bass 6 not a 6 string bass but a guitar tuned down an octave
I ‘discovered’ flats about 3 years ago when I bought a Hofner Club bass. It was transforming! Now I have flats on all of my basses apart from tapewound on my fretless. Love em
There is another complication...which is that most through-necks are laminated rather than single piece. That does make a difference to sustain etc. The epitome of this is the Kubicki, which has 32 laminates and is bolt-on, but sustains more like a cross between a carbon neck and a neck-through. Truth is you cannot be happy until you have at least one of every kind of bass!!
expensive instruments are mostly about branding. A fender bass for example. Two pieces of wood joined together by 4 bolts cant cost 5k
I slap on the pod while I clean the house thinking about fancy gear and end up reflecting on my life…Thanks fellas, I’m going to work on getting my journeyman license again.
These two could be talking about shocks still watch 😂
🔥
In regards to your taste changing in the last three months ive gone from next bass will be a thunderbird to a spector to a pj fender style bass to a jazz bass to now a stingray.
Status has no... status... cool!
33:00 I was listening to something a guitar manufacturer said, I believe it was Suhr. He made Ian's point that quarter sawn maple necks are more stable than flat sawn. However, he said that there's basically no difference between the two if they've been roasted in terms of stability.
Blu: “Where do you live?? I’ll drive to your house!” 😂 Love this podcast. So fun!
Is Ian the sorta guy to get his kids like a pack of pipe cleaners for their birthday or somethin? "Think of all the uses!"
Fender makes a set of flats 55 to 100, they're great, seem to be the ticket for somebody wanting a flexible bottom string and a more rigid top. I have the medium(50-100), love 'em to bits.
I work in software and it really struck me that this lesson about imposter syndrome is so applicable to starting new positions, with new teams. I’m sure it’s broadly applicable. Thanks Ian for your humility 🙏🏼
ADHDer here- I am diagnosed and definitely have the scattered/hyper focus things going on. I know someone else with ADHD though that doesn't have that particular symptom. Also, technically ADHD is not a mental health issue, it is a neurological/developmental disorder.
I am like Scott if my neck isn't smooth, 200 grit sandpaper goes on. I sanded the neck of my acoustic, game changer.
Boutique basses that cost more than 4000 dollars.... holy f... buy a Vintage Fender pbass instead.
This is just hilarious 😂
This is great!
It was so great to hear about your experience with the orchestra! As a former orchestra pro (shoutout to my friends you mentioned Kristen Bruya and Kate Nettleman!), I can totally identify with the "strange cats" phenomenon of electric bassists joining the orchestra. What's funny is I've switched sides and played electric more over the past couple decades, and have the same kind of imposter syndrome in reverse when gigging on electric. SBL has been phenomenal in helping me educate myself on all things bass guitar; I've learned more in a few weeks digging through archives of videos than I have in a couple decades playing casually!
I loved this chat... and totally relatable.
I think the ibuprofen thing is not so much about the drugs but about Americans sitting all day and not de-stressing… we just aren’t healthy and are in lots of pain
Got my Fender American player used for half price. Neck was badly warped, Fender replaced it under warranty at no cost, it is now the best playing bass I've ever played. Used is the way to go IF you know what you're buying into.
I think a good many producers and engineers like the taped over clean xlr out into their board, rather than the tweaked signal… at least in my experience
Wow, thanks, guys.
Ian! Thank you for taking the deep dive into strings. I appreciate you playing the string along with sharing characteristics of the strings. Very helpful! I’m thankful you followed your heart and talked about the strings of one’s “heart” too. I can relate with you on infeld flats. They are my fav to play… buttery smooth to play and have a sonic depth to their sound that is melodic and beautiful. However, I agree the decay is short and they were and adjustment being on long scale. I’ve had TI flats on a Warwick rockbass corvette I call Frankenstein. (totally modified with John East electronics and 3 pickups. LoL ) The short decay and sound of string doesn’t fit the style of music I’m playing at the moment. So I am going to try flat chromes on Frankenstein.
Ian! You’re an awesome person! Also, Thank you for taking the deep dive into strings. I appreciate you playing the string along with sharing characteristics of the strings. Very helpful! I’m thankful you followed your heart and talked about the strings of the “heart” too. You are not alone with putting new roundwounds on a bass and then don’t play it until a session or gig. The struggle is real!😂 TI’s are my fav string to play… buttery smooth to play and have a sonic depth to their sound that is melodic and beautiful…especially when playing octaves and chords… However, you’re right, the decay is short. TI’s took a long time to get set up on a long scale. I’ve had TI flats on a Warwick rockbass corvette that I call Frankenstein. (totally modified with John East electronics and 3 pickups. LoL ) The short decay and sound of string doesn’t fit the style of music I’m playing at the moment. So I am going to try flat chromes on Frankenstein.
Otis Redding and Nick Drake both passed at 26 and Ian with the paint brush ASMR
Most budget bass guitars and even normal guitars are the parts. The parts and the finish. The neck is the most important part, next is probably the pickups. You can even get by with cheap everything else.
Y'all, since types of wood came up. I was in Mount Rainier National Park in Washington state this summer. I witnessed a massive tree, all sitka spruce. My gosh, stunning
3:35, relatable
I saw Adi Oasis Playing at Love Supreme last year in the UK Absolutely Fantastic Performance! Adi was actually pregnant with her unborn daughter at the time!!!! ❤❤❤
Would've been nice to play something...😮
You guys. Another non-bass comment here. I hope y'all don't like TURKEY bacon? Uggghh, I swear it stinks up your house or apartment so incredibly bad. Has an irony after taste, unpleasant
Saint Bernard may be better than banana with that cross the pond English.
Quite an echo at 1:01:09
Amos is the BEST! Two amazing bassists and amazing people, doing a great interview. 👏
I prefer95 to 40,s stainless Rotosound strings .Or100 to 45 rotosound stainless steel strings round wound
Ohhh la wea increíble, que más grande inspiración Ra, ver todo el crecimiento y los logros, gigante, sin duda un referente de los más importantes de la música y en el empuje personal. Grande Ra!
When are you guys gonna get Scott Ian on the Scott and Ian Show?
I'm catching up on all this great older material. I love Ian. But I LOVE Sharon!! And you guys are great together
I love you guys! I am a newly converted bassist. I am a Recovering guitar player. You guys make me laugh, and entertain, but more importantly, Educate, and I love Sharon and her laugh.
Personally: Jazz Bass Jazz Bass fretless P bass with rounds P bass with flats. 5 or 6 string with active electronics OR a short scale with tapes OR a Bass VI. You can get an active sound with an EQ pedal. (Like me) You can get a 5 string Jazz (like me) My current three are 5 jazz, 5 jazz fretless, P Frankenstein with flats (Danelectro neck). Bass vi is coming. P with flats is probably next after that.
Gawd, Ted Nugent Free For All is a really stupid song, but it was rather popular back in the day. And I am coming clean here to confess that my band covered that tune, and it was me, ME, the secondary singer in my band who sang that tune. We were noob 15 years old knuckleheads, but I know we sang it until I was 17 yo, because my friend's older 19-yo sister, who I dated for a NY minute, came to watch my band rehearse it. I was rather surprised that she, a more sophisticated sophomore in college would even enjoy that tune, but I think it kind of turned her on. Hey, man, don't judge us. It was the late '70s, and there was a bit of Mexican cannabis involved. It was a different time back then for us baby, Baby Boom babies. So yeah, there you have it. An open confession that I ever covered any Ted f'ing Nuggent, but mind you, we didn't know what a f'ing racist he was back then. That was all revealed during the Obama years. I have long been cured of all that slimy stuff the minute we hit night clubs at 17 yo playing a more New Wave-aligned songbook covering unknown college radio bands, and a few better-known ones too. There you have it... Confessions from the bunny trail by a professional Brasilian Jazz musician. Aw, bless 'im, who Scott doesn't have a clue. He would have been spare like all my cousins, aunts, and uncles back home in Cardiff, Wales. I consider it a total blessing that they were not afflicted with that bastard Ted Nugent knowing what we all know now.
I've got an X Factor, an early Fender custom shop one from 90 i think. It's awesome. It was made exactly like the kubicki originals before Fender started cutting corners. I took it to Santa Barbara to get Phil to service it and he refinished the neck and said it was otherwise perfect... I'll never sell it. Glad i got to meet Phil, RIP...
Ian I forgot to bring this to your attention on my last comment. Your Guild short scale bass is currently strung with Thomastik Jazz Flats. Love those on my P-Bass. But… if you ever restring that Guild Starfire you must try Pyramid Gold flatwounds on it. Perfect for Hofner 500/1 too. These were the magic strings that were heard on the 60’s San Francisco bands for their short scale basses. Phil Lesh and Jack Cassidy used them. It’s the tension. If you hold one in the middle, they are like a limp noodle. They produce this fat thud. Plus they have the smoothest string surface of about any flat out there. The green silk Hofner strings were made by Pyramid. Not cheap, but definitely worth a try. Nothing feels like them.
Monster player !!!!!! 😵💫😵😮😯😲😦😧🙈🙉🙊🤪🥰🤗🤯🤯❤and a lovely man
Always super informative Ian and keep all of us watchers engaged. Believe it or not my first new professional bass was an Olympic White Fender Precision in 1964 that I bought at Lyon & Healy in Chicago. The hard to believe part was that it was strung with heavy gauge round rounds! My tender 15 year old fingers were brutalized. After they dulled a bit, I swapped them for flats. Had you ever heard of a mid 60’s P-Bass ever having rounds from the factory?!
