He was taken from me when he was 42, he died in my arms. This song was played at his funeral, as they carried his coffin from the church. I'm 63 now, and still cry every time I hear this song.

One of my favorite things about the Indigo Girls is how lyrically rich they are. This song is the curse that comes along with the blessings of being a poet/lyricist. There are a lot of poems about poetry, but the lyrics to this song hit every chord, ladies. My 6th-grade teacher told me that if I didn't open myself up to pain, I would never know joy. My poem was accepted in nationwide Young America Sings anthology. The "calling". Great work as always.

I use to try to commit suicide until, I heard Stevie's words of beauty and the beast. It was my only recognition as a 16 year old girl,. I am now 54 and owe part of my strength to her song.
