Islam wants to conquer the whole world and submit it to its laws. Muslim countries are called "dar al Islam" (domain of Islam) while non-subject countries are "dar al harb" (i.e. domain of war). Religion is just a "pretext" for submitting people.

The quran says that "there is no compulsion in religion" (2:256) unfortunately this verse is abrogated ("mansookh" مَنْسوخة ) and replaced by the "verse of the sword" (9:5) "kill the unbelievers/polytheists wherever you find them ..." Nice proof of tolerance indeed ...
