Eli Bennett's Necessary Evil Full Breakdown
Hey gang! Finally got around to posting the breakdown of Eli Bennett's Necessary Evil. This is related to the transcription I posted on September 30, 2024. Warning, this is a sax geek out session. I think the content could be applied to any instrument but probably most interesting to sax players. Super stoked to finally be sharing this breakdown. I think there were so many intangible details in this solo and I learned a ton despite it being just a minute long. I'm also super open to feedback from other players as to their thoughts on this one. Have any of you seen some of these fingerings before? Did I make mistakes or make assumptions that were incorrect? First time I tried to edit a vid...

    You’re definitely super hard on yourself and your harshest critic, even when you sound amazing on stage. ❤ For me, I think if the musicians are having fun and if there’s synergy among the band members, that energy translates more than any technically perfect or polished performance. P.S. The acknowledgement of your toast popping was great comedic content. 😂 “I’m really hard on myself about… my toast” 🤣 Love the candid nature of these shorts. Love you! 😘

    Dan, from where I’m standing, your performances look and sound GREAT! Don’t spend too much time and energy on mistakes you may have made (they happen then they pass), spend it on new ideas that DID work on the stand and surprised you for the positive instead. Hey Joel. I think mistakes are inevitable at all levels. We are all human. I have a couple stances when it comes to performance. It kind of depends what you're looking to get from it. You could treat the performance like an extension of your practice for sure. Or you could just make the goal of the performance to have fun. I still try and achieve that latter goal, it's a little easier to control and helps ensure I come out of things in the right headspace. Hope that helps and good luck!

    Nice work Danial. I had to move on from Bob Reynolds Studio because I couldn't see the top of the mountain, but I did pick up good habits like playing slow, working on accurate finger movements, how to transcribe tunes. One really unique thing Bob taught was keeping the fingers moving when practicing scales. I ran that by another pro, and he scoffed at the idea, but I liked the challenge. I think transcribing Beleif is totally beyond my ability. You clearly are on a much more developed level. Way to go!

      Hey Joel, thanks for your comment. Can definitely relate to your top of the mountain analogy. Although, I'd probably argue that there is no top of the mountain for any of us. I took a lot of similar things away from my time in the virtual studio. In addition , "practicing into problems", "making your worst your best", and a few other nuggets. But I'd definitely agree, there's no substitute for slow, patient , deliberate practice. Good luck in the shed!

    Daniel....amazing how well you play yet still taking lessons. Is it that the more you progressed, the more you realized how much more you didn't know? Maybe not but, I came to that painful and discouraging point early on but somehow have kept on going. I was in Bob Reynolds Virtual Studio for a while and benefited from it but realized I wasn't even close in ability as the other guys so, I moved over to Learn Jazz Standards and Better Sax to focus on the basics. A little bit of Randy Hunter also. Hope to be back in Bob's studio in a year or two. It's fun watching others progress. Good idea!

      Hi Joel , thanks for your message. I guess the cliched answer to your question would be that we never stop learning. When I was younger I took some classical lessons, never jazz. Jazz I had always tried to figure out on my own, which left a lot of holes in my playing. Now that I'm able I decided to take a second stab at it. Regarding your comments about Bob's studio. I think honestly there are players of all abilities there. You would fit right in no doubt. Also , I definitely recommend focusing on a small few things at a time. There's a wealth of information there.

    In the context of the D harmonic scale over the A7 chord at 3:04 and getting out of the trees looking at the forest, would it be accurate for me to advise myself to record an A7 sound and work the D harmonic minor over, around, in between and any other way I can think of to get the sound between my ears so when the time comes, it will simply emerge? I say this because I cannot think quick enough to play the 3rd in time when I see a chord symbol but, I'm pretty sure it sometimes happens all by itself. The 7th is unlikely. I am not able to consciously identify the 7th of a chord yet let alone play it! I love analysis exercises as you have presented here. Would it be accurate for me to consider it a means to an end? I think so but, just looking for confirmation. A little background of my experience that has led to my thinking. I started life as a drummer so, I thought a lot about rhythm and only rhythm. I played them, wrote them and felt them. Later on, after switching to Flute and then Saxophone, I noticed how effortlessly and without thinking or trying, sometimes, quarter note triplets found their way into my improvisation. I was taken aback when listening to myself wondering, how did that happen? I didn't practice it, plan it, plot how to start or stop and didn't plan the notes that were played. I think it might have been the result of the drum shed-time and some sort of subconscious activity of melody which led to developing a sense of phrasing. I say this because I have noticed that while playing drums, out of boredom, I find myself humming or grunting some sort of melody, an imaginary horn section or bass line attached to what I'm playing. Lately, I have been thinking there is some sort of connection or event where the subconscious can do the playing if I trust it and allow it to use the chops I have. The other day I was watching a video where Chris Potter sat in with Snarky Puppy. His solo was full of ideas, twist and turns but, at one point, he played what I think of as filler to get ready for the next tangent and off he quickly went into the next fantasy. It was as if he slipped out of his masterful unconscious play into the conscious and back again. What have you noticed in your experience as a player and educator on this phenomenon of conscious and subconscious playing?

    • @SaxophoneDanLive
      @SaxophoneDanLive 6 лет назад

      Hi Joel, to answer your first question about the D harmonic minor scale, the approach you suggested is exactly correct one. I would get "irealpro" or some other app for backing tracks. I'm in the process of shedding this scale as well , in 12 keys. So what I do is I'll take that D harmonic scale and play it in quarter notes @60BPM up and down the horn. Really focusing on playing even, pressing the pads down firmly and accurately. Then eight notes, triplets and sixteenth. After that I'll put a backing track on and shed the crap out of the scale. So here's a trick Mike Tremblay showed me. You can actually use this scale on a minor ii-V. You can use it over 3 chords. In this example you have E-7 A7 D-7. Which could be E-7b5, A7b9 D-7 which is a minor ii-V right? If you change one note (C#--> C natural) you can use the same scale over the E-7b5 chord. And of course it works over the D-7 chord as well. So you can basically use this scale over all three chords. I would suggest taking a song like autumn leaves and trying out this harmonic minor scale. You will realize that it actually works over the entire song! So after doing your metronome work try putting on a backing track of autumn leaves and shedding the harmonic minor scale. If you put some time into it , slowly your ears will get used to it and you will notice which notes you like the sound of over each chord. Your question about the subconscious and conscious aspect of playing is an interesting one that I would have to ponder. When you look at a player like Chris Potter, he basically embodies everything that we should aspire to as improvisers. He has mastered his instrument through years of playing and shedding. He has complete facility on it and this enables him unlimited flexibility. He can do anything at anytime, go anywhere. For us, we have to work our basics, our technique, move those into our subconscious so we can call upon our abilities when we hear something we want to play in the moment. We don't want to play exercises in a live improv setting. We want to listen, react and feed the live music that is happening. I hope that makes sense :)
