EMPTY SHOES Documentary Penlee Disater A personal recollection of the Penlee lifeboat Disaster
I went to this. I've even still got the neon pink wrist-band ! I spent days in various states of consciousness 😂 My mate was also DJing there. I saw Nigel Kennedy as he lives up the road from me. Good times, but there weren't all that many people there, which was a shame because there was a lot going on there. I was into the rave scene in a big way, I didnt sleep for three days! I remember when I got home being absolutely wrecked and with a urinary tract infection to boot ! 😂
an okay, perhaps good fisherman.... but awful businessman sadly. It would make for a good case study in college
Sadly I think you could well be correct. I suggest you watch the full series. Thanks for your comments
Me and a bunch of mates went, loved it,had no idea it had problems
Thanks for your comments its good to know that public enjoyed the event
Excellent video so far, (I'm only 10 mins in) many thanks. Finished it tonight, yes the whole thing is excellent, what a lovely bunch of people (except the banks and the BBC)
2:00:20 The dowser definitely moved his hand it was so obvious 😂
Me and misses followedyou but its about you.not the family.blooding shark still alive for hours .beautiful wife .your aboutself
what are friends and communities for...just amazing... reminds me of my fishing friends of old...
Glad you enjoyed thanks for watching
Your bloody inspiration ol nutty...
Man i love skippers who are jovial like ol mate . .. 10/10 vid
Lovely video, He has had nothing but bad luck for a few years. He deserves all the breaks and good luck in the future...what a worker, what a wish for good luck, wish he could win the lottery...he deserves so much in life... May good fortune finally come your way...!!
Thanks for your kind comments
Horrible...now please pass the tartar sauce. Peace and respect from Ontario
What a great down to earth doco of Martins life as a fisher man, thank you. Just of the record Martin if you ever get to read this from me, you my man are a gower and you should have better. I'm a Kiwi never been anywhere else but home. Over the years the little fish that you now catch are used not for human consumption, but people that use it as pet food are making millions out of it.
Thanks for your comments Richard, how true they are it's certainly a weird world
William Stevenson and sons are an amazing company I was also lucky enough to be Dec hand on a few trips and boy it was an experience and amazing job... I miss it loads. yours truly (SHAKEY)
I've subscribed mate. I was a fisherman on the Britannia v working for Barry prinn and the skipper was masher ,my name given to me was shakey....this was 2002/2004 come out the British army and more or less started working on a gill net boat week at sea week at home... Originally from London and never worked on a fishing boat in my life until then... BLOODY LOVE IT AND MISS IT LIKE MAD. I LIVE IN KENT NOW SO IF ANYONE READING THIS KNOWS OF ANYONE IN THE KENT AREA NEEDING A DECK HAND PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT DIRECTLY TO ME PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE
Thanks for subscribing and good luck in finding a boat, there is a definite shortage of crew in the industry at the moment.
Well well, what a gem of a film. Best wishes to everyone, I wonder how things turned out?
Thanks for your comments. I am seriously considering doing an update due to so many people asking.
I went to this and never knew about the problems at the time. I remember thinking it was quiet but I liked that, having done Glastonbury a few months earlier. All the bands were amazing, the atmosphere was cool and the moment the eclipse appeared is still etched into my memory. Great week!
this is treasure ❤
Great documentary noah is nuts 😅
Price of mullet last few years gone thro the roof and its the easiest fish to net specially after all this ruff weather waters like mud they cant see the net and its not like there thin on the ground
I was there. I loved it. I was there for the eclipse and Kula Shaker mainly. I think I saw me on the video very briefly. It’s a shame we didn’t see a clip from the Kula Shaker performance on here. Great memories though.
I went to this. As far as I remember, I had a great time but it was a mess.
May The God of Heaven and Earth and all that is within Bless this man Martin and His lovely wife Sally.. and May there live's prosper till death do they part.. ✝️ 🙏 Amen,amen..
This gave us a good larf this mornin'. I remember looking down from the cliffs at kennack in '72 and seeing a whopper of a basking shark close to my sister in the water! You can imagine my disappointment when it didn't eat the horrible cow😞
Alot off farms in kernow are in a shit state! If you don't believe me av a drive around!😅
All about you
The U Star captain goofed by refusing a tow when he was 8 miles offshore because his shipping company would have had to pay for it. Since then the rules have been changed to allow the coastguard to order a tow regardless of whether the captains want one or not.
Quite right too. Too much responsibility for the skipper.
The captain of the merchant ship is to blame, he was offered a tow by a tug when his engines seized up 8 miles offshore, but refused it because he and his shipping company would have had to pay for the tow, duh..
No! At the conclusion of the enquiry regarding the disaster, the final verdict was that no one was to blame. It was a combination of the terrible weather and mechanical failure on the Union Star. The master of the Union Star was completely exonerated.
I think the problem really was things went wrong faster than the situations could be assessed.
@@borleyboo5613 The Enquiry quote- "The master of the Union Star was completely exonerated"-unquote......I wonder if the victims relatives would agree with that?..;) PS- in a TV interview the brother {?} of the U Star's captain said he didn't attend a memorial service for the victims because there were already criticisms about the captains refusal of a tow offer and he didn't want to risk getting lynched by the relatives.
I think with seas like that , no one is to blame. Imagine the Solomon Brown homeward bound with 4 lives rescued suddenly destroyed by that sheer force. RIP All those souls. ❤
Thank you Jed, you made a wonderful true story. We truly enjoyed all of the ups and downs. Most positive .
Thanks for your comments. Much appreciated
10 outta 10 for putting a square peg in a round hole, what challenges to overcome and never a winge or moan
Pretty fiddly rare. Gusson found that treasure yet av ee? Right on pard

Fantastic film, thank you so much, should be on Netflix.. My father fished out of Newlyn from the 70’s to 2000. Fishing is bloody hard work. What a lovely man and family.
Much apreciated
What year was this made
@@dyl5518 It says Produced in 2002 in the titles. So probably filmed in the late 90s and early 2k’s.
Transporting myself back to 1970/71. I used to go everywhere with my dad and his company every holiday going along with a hell of a lot of weekends. Anyway My dad was working on a job at Conwy, decorating inside and out the 'Liverpool Arms'. ( 50 yards away from the Smallest House in Great Britain) I used to wander round the area I was at did my own thing but always back in time for the lift home. Anyhoo...The harbour at Conwy. I was awestruck of the whole thing. These boats coming in. Just 25 yards away from where my dads company was working and I just loved it. Anyway...I wrangled myself in helping out on the dock area with the boatsand loading up vans with fish and shellfish ....I loved it.13/14 years of age....in an era where kids were able to be kids.... I got 5 shillings - 15 shillings every Saturday or Sunday from the boats I helped out with I used to cycle just under 8 miles to get there on the weekend... rain or hail.(5 bob or 15 bob)( A HUGE amount of money) in maybe 2 bob from one boat. Half a crown from another..2 bob.. from another, shilling from someone else. Couldn't give a damn. I loved it. Money wasnt a 'thing' ..Also worked at Woolworths in Colwyn Bay after school each week day which was more cash!...But anyway I digress. Going back to the docks... i loved this place, it slowly started getting slower. Less ships going out especially into the Atlantic for cod as Europe started moving in due to EU crap and regulations. I think Conwy probably died a death with seeing itself as a fishing port by around 1978 or so. ( I was still living in the area but Uni changed stuff) Just as I was probably leaving the area. I'm just giving my experience of the fishing industry. it's a droplet in the ocean as to how and what ALL the captains of boats have had to go through regarding the sleepless nights of worry...through not catching and when you do, the prices are kaput, countless days away from home one bloody wave and you are probably fecked... all the variables.. yet...who actually gives a flying **** about fishermen? Your Government doesn't A Brexit lie... Fishermen are still knackered after all the promises.
What a beautiful video this was to watch. Proper people.
Brilliant film, I used to love seeing the sharks up on the slipway.
Get on Brother, hope u keep it up Mr Martin Ellis. Luv to u & ur fami'y 👍👏🕺
Poor man
Glad he mentioned the Mark, RIP all mariners lost.
Great! Greetings from Büdingen Frank
I'm a half way round the planet, on the N.W. coast of America, and as a fisherman, I feel this man's pain. The sea, as are the banks, are both unforgiving. I just sunk my life's savings into a hand troller, and her loss at sea would be devastating. But this is how the life of a fisherman is...
Proud to live in St Keverne. Magnificent band and people.
Let this be a warning to everyone and listen to Kenny Rogers when he sings "Don't fall in love with a dreamer". !!!
excellent
Glad you enjoyed
Hello jed, we met at barncoose miu last week and you said to watch this video. All I can say is thank you, what a fantastic video and an equally fantastic bloke. Me and my wife watched all 3 episodes and then the shifting sands video. Cracking stuff.! Thanks again and I hope that the hand is OK. Steve.
Glad you enjoyed it Steve. My hand is still there it was great to have met you I would say you are a very HANDY chap to know
Absolutely heartbreaking. I'll never forget the Solomon Brown or the Union Star and all who perished that night.

Thanks for your comments. So glad you enjoyed, these characters are becoming a rare breed in our changing world.
@@jedtrewin7083 amen to that my boss is Paul blewett the owner of camelfish... he is definitely a rare breed .
Can anyone recall the names of the couple that ran the village stores, in the middle of the beach? The man was a lovely chap who also used to sell some nice second hand pairs of binoculars. He also knew some extremely friendly seagulls who he had saved, and reared from chicks.
IT was Brenda and Graham Daw 2 lovely local character's who are both now deceased
@@jedtrewin7083 Thanks Jed. I last spoke to Graham many years ago and the year after I wen to visit and couldn't find him. I guess about 20 years ago now
❤ wish you and your family all the best loved the video keep on fishing do what you have to make money
